抄録 Corticosterone, the glucocorticoid in rodents, is released from adrenal cortex in response to stress. Sometimes, for use in experiments, infants may be separated from their mother mouse. We studied the stress of mother mouse when she separates from infants. As a result, the concentration of corticosterone in the blood of the mother mouse tended to increase, by pulling her infants apart. In the case of using infant mice for animal experiments, it was suggested that it is necessary to consider the maternal stress.

抄録 Environmental enrichment, whose material is commercially available, is today thought to improve animal welfare, for instance, control of stress. There were some reports that these report contribution of suppression of stress, which the mother mice suffer during nursing their pup. However, the effects on stress-suppression by introducing the enrichment materials is unknown. In this study, determined plasma and urinary corticosterone in the mother mice with or without the materials from their making to weaning.

抄録 Urothelial carcinoma usually presents with hematuria, but cases of multiple lymphadenopathy with elevated S-pancreas-1 antigen (SPan-1) levels have not been reported. A 62-year-old Japanese man with lymphadenopathies was diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma of unknown origin and transferred to our hospital for further diagnosis. Serum carbohydrate antigen 19-9 and SPan-1 levels were extremely elevated. Uroplakin III immunostaining was positive in the inguinal lymph node, and cystoscopy revealed the presence of invasive urothelial carcinoma. Treatment with cisplatin and gemcitabine promoted a complete metabolic response for > 4 years. The detection of uroplakin III and serum SPan-1 might help diagnose urothelial carcinoma.

抄録 Japan's population has been skewing toward the elderly, but the outcomes of advanced elderly trauma are not clear. Here we compared the outcomes of very elderly trauma patients (≧85 years old) with those of 65- to 84-year-old trauma patients. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients treated at Hyogo Emergency Medical Center from August 2010 to August 2016; 631 patients were entered in the study. We divided them into the younger geriatrics (YG group, 65-84 years old: n=534) and older geriatrics (OG group, ≧85 years old: n=97). The group’s patient characteristics, mortality, 1-year survival rate, and Barthel index were tabulated and compared. The patients’ mean age was 75.6±7.5 years. There was no significant difference in mortality between the YG and OG groups (9.6% vs. 15.1%, odds ratio [OR] 1.73; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.93-3.23, p=0.083). The 1-year survival rate (94.4% vs. 77.8%, OR 0.19, 95% CI 0.07-0.51; p<0.01) and Barthel index (Median score; 100 (IQR: 85-100) vs. 80 (IQR: 15-95), OR 0.98, 95% CI 0.97 to 0.99, p<0.01) differed significantly between the groups. Our study did not find a significant difference in-hospital mortality between patients in the YG group and those in the OG group.

抄録 According to the World Health Organization’s World Report, approx. 950,000 children and young people < 18 years old die from an injury each year, and unintentional injury deaths account for a large portion of these cases. Here we used medico-legal documents to epidemiologically analyze the cases of unintentional injury deaths among children < 5 years old in Okayama Prefecture, Japan from 2001 to 2015. Age, sex, manner/cause of death, and various circumstances of the incident were investigated. There were 73 unintentional injury deaths during the study period. Drowning (n=29), suffocation (n=24), and transport accidents (n=13) were the major categories of unintentional injury deaths. Twenty-two cases (30.1%) were autopsied. Differences in the characteristics of the unintentional injury deaths by age were observed. Information which cannot be obtained from Vital Statistics was available from medico-legal documents, and detailed characteristics of unintentional injury deaths among children < 5 years old were elucidated. Investigating medico-legal information is one of the meaningful measures for the prevention of unintentional injury deaths among children in Japan.

抄録 Gait rehabilitation training with robotic exoskeleton is drawing attention as a method for more advanced gait rehabilitation training. However, most of the rehabilitation robots are mainly focused on locomotion training in the sagittal plane. This study introduces a novel gait rehabilitation system with actuated pelvic motion to generate natural gait motion. The rehabilitation robot developed in this study, COWALK, is a lower-body exoskeleton system with 15 degrees of freedom (DoFs). The COWALK can generate multi-DoF pelvic movement along with leg movements. To produce natural gait patterns, the actuation of pelvic movement is essential. In the COWALK, the pelvic movement mechanism is designed to help hemiplegic patients regain gait balance during gait training. To verify the effectiveness of the developed system, the gait patterns with and without pelvic movement were compared to the normal gait on a treadmill. The experimental results show that the active control of pelvic movement combined with the active control of leg movement can make the gait pattern much more natural.

抄録 Electroencephalography (EEG) examines the functional state of the brain. High-frequency oscillations (HFOs) in the ripple (80-200/250 Hz) and fast ripple (200/250-500/600 Hz) bands have recently been attracting attention, and their recording has been enabled by advancements in digital EEG techniques. The detection of HFOs was previously limited to intracranial EEG, but fast oscillations (FOs) in the gamma (40-80 Hz) and ripple bands can now be detected over the scalp. HFOs and FOs have been shown to be related to epileptogenicity in intracranial EEG and scalp EEG, respectively. A large number of FOs are found in the scalp EEGs of pediatric patients with various epileptic encephalopathies, particularly West syndrome. FOs are suggested to be a biomarker of the epileptogenic cortical region in epilepsy surgery. FOs are detectable even in patients with idiopathic focal epilepsies, including benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes and Panayiotopoulos syndrome, who are not generally candidates for operation. The detection of HFOs and FOs may provide clues to the pathophysiology of epilepsy and the relationship between HFOs and cognitive dysfunction.
