This drawing shows the state of Gokoen Garden after its renovation in the Genroku era (1688?1704). The landscapes are different from the present-day garden. Specifically, the geometry of Sawa-no-ike pond is different and there is no Yuishin-zan artificial hill. Cherry trees in the garden are classified into several varieties and their numbers are noted in the margin. The artist also depicts a wide variety of plants by drawing them differently. We assume the drawing was produced sometime around 1712, based on the following clues. First, Matoba Kirokuro, whose name appears on the drawing, was dismissed from service in the second month of the fourth year of the Shotoku era (1714). Second, Futatsuyanagi Heizaburo passed away from illness in the first month of the third year of Shotoku era (1713). Third, Kano Yuchi, a painter of the domain, wrote that he was ordered to produce a map of Gokoen in the third month of the second year of the Shotoku era (1712). At present, a similar drawing (Map of a Teahouse) is in the custody of the Korakuen Garden office. |
