Title Alternative Effects of parity on the associations between evacuation and psychological distress and cardiovascular disease among women after the Great East Japan Earthquake : A cross-sectional study of the Fukushima Health Management Survey
Author Yasukawa, Sumiyo| Eguchi, Eri| Ohira, Tetsuya| Hayashi, Fumikazu| Sakai, Akira| Shimabukuro, Michio| Fujimori, Keiya| Miura, Itaru| Yabe, Hirooki| Maeda, Masaharu| Yasumura, Seiji|
Abstract Introduction : Women are more likely to be physically, mentally, and socially vulnerable after disasters because of the physical, socioeconomical, and lifestyle-related factors that are often related to their parity. Here, we analyzed the effects of women's parity on the association between evacuation and psychological distress, trauma reactions, and cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Participants and Methods : The participants were residents living in 13 municipalities in the evacuation zone of Japan's Fukushima Prefecture after the March 11, 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake who responded to the Fukushima Health Management Survey in FY2012. A total of 30,709 women aged 40-90 years were included in the analyses. We performed a logistic regression analysis to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) adjusted for CVD risk factors.
Results : A multivariate analysis revealed that among the parous women (n = 19,608), evacuation was associated with psychological distress (adjusted OR 1.30, 95%CI : 1.17-1.44), trauma reactions (OR 1.22, 95%CI : 1.11-1.35), and heart disease (OR 1.14, 95%CI : 1.03-1.26) compared to the non-evacuation status. Among the nulliparous women (n = 1,794), there was no association between the evacuation and any outcomes.
Conclusion : The evacuation of individuals after the Great East Japan Earthquake was associated with psychological distress, trauma reactions, and heart disease, especially among parous women.

Title Alternative Evaluation of empathy in nursing students : Empathy in everyday situations and empathy as healthcare professionals
Author Nagoshi, Shiori| Matsumoto, Riho| Kajiwara, Yuki| Morimoto, Michiko|
Abstract Empathy is crucial for building an effective patient-nurse relationship. This study aimed to examine two aspects of nursing students' empathy : their empathy in everyday situations and their empathy as healthcare professionals.
This study involved 214 female students in their second to fourth years of nursing studies at a university, with analysis focusing on 118 participants. The Empathy Experience Scale Revised (EESR) was used to measure empathy in everyday situations, and the Jefferson Empathy Scale, Health Professionals version (JSE, HP-Version) measured the participants' empathy as healthcare professionals. The EESR comprises the Scale of Shared Experiences (SSE) and the Scale of Insufficient Sharing Experience (SISE) ; the JSE comprises Perspective Taking, Compassionate Care, and Standing in the Patient's Shoes.
The total JSE scores and the Perspective Taking subfactor scores tended to be higher in fourth-year students, who also showed SISE scores significantly lower than those of students with fewer years of nursing study. Relationship analysis showed a moderate positive correlation between SSE scores and Perspective Taking scores. There was a weak negative correlation between SISE and Standing in the Patient's Shoes scores. Compassionate Care scores were not significantly related to SSE or SISE scores. These results suggest that nursing students' empathy as healthcare professionals increases as they advance in their nursing studies, and emphasize the importance of scale selection in measuring empathy.

Title Alternative Why Is Intermediate Organization Necessary?
FullText URL oer_056_2_001_016.pdf
Author Fujii, Daiji| Oshima, Tamako|
Abstract This paper challenges a fundamental question, ‘Why is an intermediate organization necessary?’ Due to transaction costs and market failures on the one hand and the limitations of organizational control mechanisms on the other hand, many‘ intermediate organizations’ are observed in the real world. How can we tackle to explain the governance mechanism considered to be‘ intermediate?’ If we are to discuss such socioeconomic orders, this paper assumes that we should not be able to link micro-level explanations and macro-level ones concerning the third mode of governance mechanisms all at once. We need to stick to the meso-level at fi rst. The theoretical elaboration since Ouchi’s(1980) discussion of clan-type governance and cumulative empirical research on industrial agglomerations have allowed us to construct a more sophisticated theory called community capital. In effective communities, members are ‘embedded as insiders’ who serve the purpose of the community, share experiences of failures and successes, and find and deepen their common identity. This limited membership is bound by‘ mutual trust to rely on each other’ for‘ distribution of short-term risks.’ In contrast to social norms that need to be abstract enough to be widely shared, the communal norms that are concrete enough to allow the members to understand without hesitation how they should behave in localized contexts are cumulatively cultivated along socializing process. Among the norms, sense of mutual obligation to incur intermittent costs for the whole community is a crucial norm for the sustainable development of the community. However, as a practical matter, membership control, mutual trust and short-term risk allocation may serve the communities in the short run, but they do not guarantee long-term accumulation of shared capital. As a result, the limits of community capital may need to be discussed once again, especially today when market liquidity is increasing, and its failures tend to become more apparent in a variety of areas.

Title Alternative Developing a scale to measure nurses' difficulty related to the treatment of gender dysphoric patients
FullText URL 134_22.pdf
Author Miyake, Maki| Oshima, Yoshitaka| Namba, Shihoko| Matsumoto, Yosuke| Horiuchi, Makiko| Yamada, Norihito|
Abstract This study aimed to develop a scale to measure the perceived difficulty experienced by nurses in treating and caring for patients diagnosed with gender dysphoria and examine its reliability and validity. We developed a 26-item preliminary scale through discussions with experts in gender dysphoria treatment. We administered a questionnaire including this scale to 1,010 nurses working at Okayama University Hospital and analyzed the data of 346 nurses who had been involved in the treatment of gender dysphoria and had no missing responses.
A total of 20 items consisting of two factors, “relationship building” and “negative emotion for gender dysphoria,” were extracted by exploratory factor analysis, and we used them in the final version of the scale. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the entire scale was 0.879, indicating a high degree of internal consistency.
However, the correlations with a communication skills scale (ENDCOREs) and the Scale of Gender Conception were limited, and the external validity could not be proven. This scale may be useful for evaluating nursing practice and educational support for nurses; however, there is room for further study on the scale validation.
