This map belongs to the series comprising over 60 provincial maps prepared in 1633 based on the survey by officials of the Shogunate government. After the establishment of the province and district system (under the Ritsuryo system) during the 8th century, it became customary to place the map of Yamashiro province at the top of any list of provinces. The vermilion circle pinpoints the location of the Imperial palace. As residences of feudal lords, Nijo and Yodo castles are specified. Next to the mark for Yodo Castle a slip of paper is attached indicating 60,000 koku for Ishikawa Tonomo-no-kami. In addition to marks showing villages, two symbols stand out: one for Fushimi town and another for the abandoned castle of Fushimi. |
