| Description4 |
It is probable that this map of Japan was drawn by hand, based on the Map of Japan prepared in the Shoho era (1644?1648). Different colors are used to distinguish provinces. On the envelope it is written: “A copy of the map provided by the retired priest Daizui of Fumon-ji Temple in Hirado, Hizen Province; transcribed on the fourth day of the seventh month in the sixth year of the Kyoho era (1721).” The map shows Hizen Province at the bottom, with Kyoto and Edo above. Characters are written from the east to west side of the map. The map does not include Ryukyu. Korea (noted as “Koryo”) and Ezo are colored in light gray, while Japan’s mainland is represented in various colors. |
