This is a scaled-down version of the provincial map produced by government order in the Genroku era (1688–1704). Six-tenths the size of the original, this version was presented to the kuni metsuke (province supervisor) sent by the Tokugawa Shogunate government on the occasion of Ikeda Tsugumasa’s succession to the head of the Ikeda family. The map was prepared using the same style as the copy of the Genroku map. The title “Matsudaira Oi-no-kami,” which appears on the map, refers to Ikeda Tsugumasa, who inherited the domain from his deceased father, Tsunamasa, on the 18th day of the 12th month in the fourth year of the Shotoku era (1714) in the lunar calendar, a year before the production of this version. According to his vassal’s resume, the map was produced by Arai Nagayoshi and his son Santaro (later renamed Naganao). |
