Abstract Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been reported to be a new treatment option for treatment-resistant depression. In Japan, there has been limited research into its feasibility, efficacy, and tolerability. We have launched a trial of rTMS for treating medication-resistant major depressive disorder and bipolar depression. We are investigating low-frequency rTMS to the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and traditional high-frequency rTMS to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, in 20 patients. The primary outcome of the study is the treatment completion rate. This study will provide new data on the usefulness of rTMS for treatment-resistant depression in Japan.

Abstract Estimation methods for pediatric weight have not been evaluated for Japanese children. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of mothersʼ reports of their childrenʼs weight in Japan. We also evaluated potential alternatives to the estimation of weight, including the Broselow tape (BT), Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS), and Parkʼs formulae. We prospectively collected cross-sectional data on a convenience sample of 237 children aged less than 10 years who presented to a general pediatric outpatient clinic with their mothers. Each weight estimation method was evaluated using Bland-Altman plots and by calculating the proportion within 10 and 20 of the measured weight. Mothersʼ reports of weight were the most accurate method, with 94.9 within 10 of the measured weight, the lowest mean difference (0.27kg), and the shortest 95 limit of agreement (-1.4 to 1.9kg). The BT was the most reliable alternative, followed by APLS and Parkʼs formulae. Mothersʼ reports of their children ʼs weight are more accurate than other weight estimation methods. When no report of a childʼs weight by the mother is available, BT is the best alternative. When an aged-based formula is the only option, the APLS formula is preferred.

Abstract Childcare workers acquire a practical knowledge through the practice of childcare. We conducted research on how they acquire the practical knowledge even in the face of difficulty in guardian support. We used the qualitative data obtained by a group interview method. The data indicated the possibility that new childcare workers are so busy that they are often panicked by the guardians' complaints. However, our research revealed that such new childcare workers can establish a good relationship with the guardians by gradually acquiring a practical ability to provide a good childcare taking advice from their supervisors and colleagues. We also revealed that the new childcare workers make their own views on childcare and development clearer in their growth process.

Abstract Research suggests that reading strategy usage is influential on L2 reading proficiency. Considering this, the LEC English Department decided to examine students’ reading strategies as a part of its much larger curricular review. The results support existing research showing that more-proficient readers use somewhat more varied strategy usage. Posttest results reveal that a course on reading skills led to some minimal improvements in top-down reading strategies. Implications are discussed.

Abstract This study was aimed to investigate a support program on childcare contents“human relations” (Nishiyama, 2009) intended to intervene in the efficacy of childcare persons in terms of the pressing issue of how to cultivate efficacy in childcare persons in respect to children. It was aimed at making qualitative improvements in childcare practice by providing increased motivation to the childcare persons. This study reported a section of the results of investigation on the effects of individual execution of the support program. Finally, consideration based on the result was added from the viewpoint of childcare persons support and the research topics in the future were shown.

Abstract This study is an overview of the developments in interdepartmental cooperation and interdisciplinary collaboration between school systems and also between counselors and non-teaching staff at the elementary, junior high and high school levels from a psychological and pedagogical perspective. Strategies under examination will include cooperation between management and also between technical and non-teaching staff, school system development, establishing and maintaining a cooperative mood and building a communicative spirit at school. In addition, we will look at majors and specializations of non-teaching staff and leadership qualitative of principals (and head masters).Few researchers have emphasized the combined study of school management and psychology. In this paper, I hope to highlight more ideas related to the specializations of staff as a parameter of systematized cooperation.
