Abstract | We have estimated the degree of transmission of Plasmodium vivax malaria in Vanuatu Islands, eastern Melanesia with the aid of the computer simulations, which has been carried out on the platform of a mathematical transmission model. The malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax has a relapse character, which arises from hypnozoites in the liver. This phenomen makes a malaria control strategy difficult. When the mass drug administration is executed, the prevalence of Plasmodium vivax decreases moderately as compared with that of Plasmodium falciparum, and it recovers before long being affected by the relapses. The simulations suggest that one cannot attain the eradication of Plasmodium vivax malaria without the concentrated execution of the mass drug administration and the vector control that fairly reduces the vactorial capacity. |

Abstract | We tried an experiment to see whether or not it was possible to teach English considering the rising emphasis on TOEIC. Each of the three of us was in charge of five lessons out ot fifteen. One taught a section in listening in a language laboratory, another taught a section in grammer and vocabulary, the third taught a section in reading. There was no exam at the end of the semester, but mini-TOEIC tests were administered, and taking the TOEIC was mandatory. Students were evaluated on both their mini-tests and their TOEIC scores. Student evaluations reflected a positive attitude toward the course. Most students favored the standard of TOEIC as a test of course evaluation. Although we realize there are aspects to be improved (i.e., students' listening ability, class-time efficiency), we should continue to develop English ability focusing on the internationally established medium, TOEIC. |

Abstract | The distribution on Ca, K, Na and Cl in root and leaves was studied in salt tolerant variety (Chikugo Izumi) and salt sensitive variety (PB-81) of wheat under saline conditions. The plants grown in 5% Hoagland's nutrient solution were subjected to 100 mM NaCl salinity for one week before observation with scanning electron microscope and analysis of selected samples with X-ray microanalyzer. Root growth was not affected in salt tolerant variety but reduced significantly in salt sensitive variety. Shoot growth was reduced in both varieties but much higher in salt sensitive variety. Salinity increased accumulation of Na and Cl in all root cells including vascular cells in salt sensitive variety. Salt tolerant variety not only reduced uptake of Na and Cl under saline conditions but also restricted their accumulation in cortex maintaining vascular cells relatively free of these ions. Salt sensitive variety failed to block transport of Na and Cl from root to leaves leading to much accumulation of these ions in leaves under salinity sterss. |

Abstract | A few wheat varieties including two Japanese wheat varieties were evaluated for their salt tolerance at seeding stage, their behavior to increasing salinity levels and role of Na exclusion capacity in salt tolerance mechanisms. The wheat varieties were grown in nutrient solution and subjected to 0 (control), 25,75 and 125 mM NaCl salinity levels for 7 days. Although the shoot growth was reduced while Na contents were increased progressively with increasing salinity in all varieties, the varieties were quite different in their response. Salt tolerant va rieties maintained less reduction in their root and shoot growth and better water relations in their shoots than salt sensitive varieties under saline conditions. The wheat varieties were quite different in their Na exclusion capacity. Poor growth in salt sensitive varieties might be due to higher accumulation of Na in their shoots resulting from low Na exclusion capacity of roots, higher Na transport to shoot and/or inferior compartmentation capability. |

Abstract | To evaluate hypoxic-salinity tolerance in wheat varieties, three Japanese varieties (Nourin-61, Chikugo Izumi and Shirasagi Komugi, relatively salt tolerant) and one Pakistani variety (Blue Silver, relatively salt sensitive) were grown under control, hypoxia, saline and hypoxic-saline conditions. The results suggested that relatively hypoxia and salt tolerant variety Nourin-61 was capable of producing the highest relative shoot yield under combined stress conditions. On the other hand, relatively sensitive variety to both hypoxia and salinity conditions, could not withstand harmful effects of combined stress. A more close correlation of plant growth characters between salinity and hypoxic-salinity than hypoxia and hypoxic-salinity indicated that varieties with higher salt tolerance would suffer less than varieties with higher hypoxia tolerance under combined stress conditions. And the balance of Na/K ratio in shoot tissues seems to be the major evaluation factor as the tolerant variety when salinity and hypoxia stress occur together. |

Abstract | For evaluating subsurface contamination, sampling method (boring) is commonly used, but this method cannot monitor the change of in-situ contamination and concentration with respect to time. The purpose of this study is to develop a measuring system for subsurface contamination in which a so-called FDR-V system (Frequency Domain Reflectometry with Vector network analyzer) was employed to measure the salinity contaminant. This FDR-V method is a coaxial probe method, which allows the measurement of the complex dielectric constant from 1GHz to 18GHz. The experimental study indicates the possibility in measuring both the salinity concentration and volumetric moisture content. |

Abstract | Inclusion of aggregates leads to a reduction in drying shrinkage of cement paste. This is due to the elastic deformation of the aggregates that partly restrains the shrinkage deformation of cement paste. Hence, concrete with higher aggregate content exhibits smaller shrinkage. In addition, concrete with aggregates of higher modulus of elasticity or of rougher surfaces is more resistant to shrinkage process. In this paper the effects of the type of coarse aggregate on the shrinkage of normal and high-strength concretes are investigated. Two different types of crushed stone were used as coarse aggregates to produce the concrete mixtures used in this study. For each coarse aggregate type, two normal-strength concrete (NSC) mixtures and two high-strength concrete (HSC) mixtures were prepared. The 28-day compressive strength values of NSC mixtures were about 35 and 50 MPa, while those of HSC mixtures were 70 and 100 MPa, respectively. All shrinkage specimens were cured in water for 14 days after casting, then exposed to drying under the conditions of constant temperature (20℃) and relative humidity (60%). It has been shown that the type of the coarse aggregate influences shrinkage behaviour of both normal and high-strength concretes. |

Abstract | In functional principal component analysis (PCA), we treat the data that consist of functions not of vectors (Ramsay and Silverman, 1997). It is an attractive methodology, because we often meet the cases where we wish to apply PCA to such data. But, to make this method widely useful, it is desirable to study advantages and disadvantages in actual applications. As alternatives to functional PCA, we may consider multivariate PCA applied to 1) original observation data, 2) sampled functional data with appropriate intervals, and 3) coefficients of basis function expansion. Theoretical and numerical comparison is made among ordinary functional PCA, penalized functional PCA and the above three multivariate PCA. |

Abstract | The global positioning system is utilized in lake flow analysis to facilitate experimental evaluation for numerical results of a lake flow simulation. In our lake flow experiment a float travels on the lake surface receiving the fluid resistance due to lake flow, while a global positioning system receiver keeps track of its position. A momentum equation is derived when the product of the float mass and its acceleration is set equal to the driving force. The temporal change in the position of the float can be simulated when numerical solutions of lake flow equations are given. A comparison of numerical results and experimental data leads to an evaluation of the numerical simulation of lake flow. |

Abstract | Relationship has been discussed by Tanaka and Zhang(1999) between the sensitivity analyses based on influence functions and on Cook's local influence, and it has been shown that equivalent results are obtained under general conditions by these analyses in statistical modeling without/with equality constraints. However, a condition implicitly assumed in the proof in Tanaka and Zhang(1999) in the case with equality constraints does not necessarily hold. The present paper gives a complete proof without assuming the condition. Also a formula for the normal curvature is derived for the convenience of practical computation. |

Abstract | Analysis of covariance selection models is a useful multivariate method to analyze the covariance structure of a multivariate normal distribution. It is used to reveal cause-and-effect relationships. In the present paper we review the theory and study numerically how the stepwise procedure of covariance selection works in actual data analysis. Then we try to develop a method of influence analysis in covariance selection, and show a numerical example to illustrate the usefulness of the method of influence analysis. |

Abstract | In many epidemiological and medical studies, a number of cancer motralities in catagorical classification may be considered as having Poisson distribution with person-years at risk depending upon time. The cancer mortalities have been evaluated by additive or multiplicative models with regard to background and excess risks based on several covariances such as sex, age at the time of bombings, time at exposure, or ionizing radiation, cigarette smoking habits, duration of smoking habits, etc. An interest herein to examine an additive, synergistic,or antagonistic relationship between radiation exposures and cigarette smoking habits for cancer mortalities. The results revealed a highly significant antagonistic influence for cancer mortalities from all nonhematologic findings, lung and respiratory system with negative interaction between radiation exposures and cigarette smoking amounts. |

Abstract | We have constructed a stochastic transmission model for lymphatic filariasis caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, and have analyzed its prevalence using computer simulations. In Pondicherry, India, where Wuchereria bancrofti has been spreading, the Vector Control Research Centre has carried out an integrated vector control strategy against malaria and filariasis for five years (1981~1985) with good results reported. Our study was aimed at evaluating the effect of vector control in the context of Pondicherry, and in particular the continuous effect for the post-control period. In this paper, we have used the LYMFASIM model proposed by Plaisier et al., the carrying capacity model by Rochet and the population dynamics model by us. In the LYMFASIM model and the carrying capacity model, we have modified the quantities of parameters in order to fit the models to the parasitological, entomological and epidemiological data in Pondicherry. We have combined the improved LYMFASIM model with the other models. Through simulations of our combinated model, we have compared the prevalence rate in the human population as well as the mean number of L3-larvae in the mosquito population, with and without vector control. As a result, the simulations show that the prevalence rate would be restrained for a long time even if only a small continuous effect of the vector control remains in the post-control period. However, the mean number of L3-larvae would recovered within a short time comparatively. This is because of the differences in life spans between human and mosquito as well as the incubation periods between the adult worm in the human host and L3-larvae in the mosquito vector. |

Abstract | Nanoporous TiO(2) were synthesized via hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) in HCl acidic conditions using sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) as a templating agent. The order of the nanostructure of samples before calcination was improved with increasing the SDS/TTIP molar ratio. The calcined samples presented uniform mesopore structure with the average diameter of 4-5 nm and considerably large surface areas over 200m(2)/g, although the periodicity of the nanostructure was exceedingly reduced by the removal of the template. The prepared TiO(2) exhibited exceedingly higher activities on the catalytic oxidation of benzene compared to the commercial TiO(2), probably due to the difference of their pore suructures. |

Abstract | In our study, we have investigated the influence of the intermediate host population density on the prevalence of Echinococcus multilocularis in the definitive host using a mathematical model of transmission. For the vole population (intermediate host) in Hokkaido, a model of population dynamics has been constructed in this paper which follows the seasonal and annual fluctuations. In the northeastern area, the vole density appears to fluctuate periodically with a 4 year cycle. The prevalence of Echinococcus multilocularis in the fox population (definitive host) can be affected by the density of vole through the fox ingesting infectious voles. Therefore we have prepared a food habit function of foxes and the logistic distribution has been proposed. The simulations which have been carried out using the mathematical model for transmission of Echinococcus multilocularis together with the vole dynamics have indicated that the prevalence in foxes is correlated and synchronized with the population dynamics of vole. In addition they have also made us recognize that it is necessary to introduce a suitable food habit function into the transmission model. |

Abstract | Flood becomes regular feature in riverrine Bangladesh. Every year, around 21 percent of land is flooded during monsoon season, however, in severe situation this figure shot up to more than 60 percent of total land. This paper is an attempt to analyze hydrological characteristics of two catastrophic events (1988 and 1998 flood) in the light of flood history in Bangladesh. The analysis demonstrates that the 1998 flood was more severe than the 1988 one. Moreover, the 1998 flood was also prolonged than the 1988 flood due to heavy rainfall inside and outside of the country. Finally, flood management issues in Bangladesh have been analyzed and found that structural solution to mitigate flood is not the only solution. Based on the analysis some possible mitigation options are put foward. |

Abstract | Groundwater has been recognised as the most cost-effective option of safe water supply to rural communities in Ghana. The demand for potable water has led to the drilling of a large number of boreholes in many parts of the country. To establish the threshold of groundwater development from storage in a major river catchment (Pra River) in South-West Ghana, studies on recharge to the weathered aquifer and statistical evaluations of specific capacity and potential yield have been carried out. The SACSMA conceptual hydrological modelling system was used for the recharge estimate. With recharge rate of 50 mm/yr, the natural groundwater resources in the basin was estimated to support a maximum withdrawal of 12 l/s for a 10 hour per day pumping. The groundwater resources potential of 1.6 l/sk㎡ could be considered the threshold of groundwater exploitation in similar river basins in South-West Ghana. A study into the relation between permeability and recharge under different conditions and scenarios is required to define their limiting role in groundwater resources development. |

Abstract | The rapid impact assessment (RIAM), which was developed in Denmark, is a new tool for the execution of environmental impact assessments. RIAM is quite flexible, transparent and leaves a permanent record, which can be independently checked, validated or updated. RIAM has successfully been used to prioritize water resources management problems in Ghana in the order of which problems call for the most urgent attention. The priority list was easily validated and accepted to be the true reflection of the situation at a national workshop in which experts and representatives from water agencies, donor agencies, university faculties and departments, research institutes, private institutions and organizations including Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) participated. The study has shown that RIAM, which can also be used in a developing country like Ghana, is a very useful tool in such prioritization process as has been applied in this exercise. |
