Abstract | Although, today, higobiwa is treated as an independent genre, it is apparent that it came into contact with other narrative traditions, borrowed some of their stories, and later reworked them, thus creating a unique world of Kyushu tales. In this paper, I first provide an overview of this tradition. Then, I will discuss two famous pieces focusing on domestic conflicts and family relationships from the repertory of blind hiwa players from the Kyushu region: Azekakehime あぜかけ姫, the story of a poor young woman, who is tormented by her evil mother-in -law, and Shuntokumaru 俊徳丸, afamous Japanese tale about a wicked stepmother, which is found in several Japanese storytelling genres. |

Abstract | Scientific consensus agrees that over recent decades and generations, Earth has entered a new geological epoch, termed the Anthropocene. Whereas previous new epochs are postulated to have followed comet strikes and solar realignment, it is demonstrable that it is now human activity that most affects climate change, the release and transformation of chemicals, and general endangerment to life forms. At the same time, human societies throughout history can be seen to have adjusted to effects beyond their control. This is particularly clear in countries marked by frequent seismic activity, with Japan and Chile being prime examples. Particularly, changes in educational policy over the last hundred years appear to correlate to responses to major seismic catastrophes in these countries, with this article proposing to supplement understandings of educational policy evolution with consideration of the legacies of such cataclysms and the revised priorities they elicit. |

Abstract | In this paper we review our class activities using The Intersection of Arts, Humanities, and Science (2020), which was coauthored by the members of The Japan Association of International Liberal Arts with the aim of integrating content and language learning according to the concept of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). The book includes not only topics to stimulate university students'intellectual curiosity but also various activities through which students can read, think, and express themselves in English. Based on our reflective review of class activities and student samples, we discuss possible pedagogical effects and further improvements of CLIL. |
