| Abstract | The agricultural water has manifold functions for farming at community level. However, along with the difficulties to maintain the agriculture water path that are caused by the decreasing of farmers and the aging of the society, the agricultural water is losing its functions even that as water resource for local community. This paper presents a survey of the residential awareness on regional water utilization to find the possibility for the maintenance of agricultural water path. Economic evaluation is tried for the regional warter utilization function. This study is carried out at a regional level that covers both farming households and non farmers. Following three points can be confirmed based on the results of questionnaire survey. Firstly, local citizens admit that the agricultural water does have some values (3,037 Yen per household per year). Secondly, the higher the environmental awareness is, and the longer the citizen has lived there, the higher evaluation to function of the agricultural water can be observed. Thirdly, even within those who is holding high evaluation to the agricultural water, it is thought to be quite difficult to maintain the agricultural water path due to the aging of the society and uneven distribution of the participants. |

| Abstract | Experience of flux measurements over tall canopies has revealed that the eddy flux of sensible plus latent heat is about 30% smaller than the available radiant energy flux. A systematic observation was carried out to investigate the imbalance problem on rice field. The rice field represents a complex system consisting of rice plant, irrigated water and soil. Date obtained in this experiment show that appreciable understimations of sensible and latent heat fluxes are not recognized but understimations of 15 to 23% are counted in the soil heat flux. |

| Abstract | The use of greenhouses has rapidly increased after 1965, and the area became 11 times of 1965 as of 2001. Meteorological conditions and soil moisture environments inside a greenhouse are significantly different from those in the open field. These differences should be understandable to establish accurate predictions of water consumption and evapotranspiration inside a greenhouse which play important roles in the design of any irrigation system. This study aims to estimate the micrometeorological conditions inside an oriental pickling melon greenhouse which can be used for evapotranspiration calculations. Therefore, micrometeorological data were measured inside and outside the greenhouse for the comparison purposes. The results of this study may be summarized as: (1) Solar radiation inside the greenhouse was decreased about 30% of that of outside it by plastic film and frame. (2) Net radiation during the daytime inside the greenhouse was almost the same as the absorbed total short-wave radiation. (3) The difference of daytime mean air temperature inside and outside the greenhouse was between 3 and 4 degree Celsius in day average. (4) Both relative humidity and saturation deficit inside the greenhouse were higher than outside, and those were affected by ventilation. (5) Wind speed inside the greenhouse was greatly affected by opening rate of the house side. |

| Abstract | Standard deviations for vertical wind velocity and scalar quantities, such as carbon dioxide,c, and water vapor,q, were analyzed on the basis of Monin-Obukhov similarity theory in the atmospheric surface layer. The correlation coefficient between scalar quantities c and q ,|R(cq)|, was derived from the similarity functions and can be expressed as the ratio of B(q)/B(c)(B(q)≤B(c)), where parameter B is the value of the normalized standard deviation of carbon dioxide and water vapor at neutral conditions. |

| Abstract | It is important to clarify how the soil moisture changes by irrigation and how moisture is consumed by absorption of root, to plan irrigation appropriately in upland field. And, it is thought that clarifying the growth of the root can be important information in the water management, because the amount and the pattern of root water uptake change depending on the growth stage. However, there are not too much a lot of researches that measure the root, in addition, the example intended for crops of 'Gourd family (scientific name:Cucurbitaceae)' is not found. Therefore, for oriental pickling melon, it measured how for the root system to grow up as crop grew every three weeks. The results of this study may be summarized as: 1) Root amount increased with the growth of crops, and the majority of the root existed to 20cm in depth. A lot of rootlets with the role of water uptake existed outside of from 10 to 20cm. 2) Root length has grown up in horizontal and vertical direction at a dash at the stage of growing initial. 3) It was able to be confirmed to the growth of the ground part and the root that the length and amount either also had implications. Moreover, root amount and plant caver ratio drew similar curve. |

| Abstract | To elucidate the seasonal and inter-annual variation of CO(2) exchanges between the atmosphere and cultivated field in Japan, the CO(2) flux has been measured by the eddy correlation technique at the experimental farm of Agricultural Faculty, Okayama University since December in 1998. The CO(2) sensor, however, does not work under rainy conditions. The improved aerodynamic technique was developed and used to cover CO(2) flux data which were not collected. This technique gives reasonable CO(2) fluxes even in rainy days. The reliability of the technique was also confirmed by comparing CO(2) fluxes with those measured by the eddy correlation technique using data in fine weather conditions. |

| Author | Suito, Hiroshi| Nouka, Masakatsu| |
| Abstract | The purpose of this research is solving the flow in a lake which caused by a fan who rotates at the low speed set on the water surface for the purpose of water quality purification of a lake. Although it is shown clearly by various experiments that the water quality in a lake improved by operation of this kind of equipment, the mechanism of the flow was not fully understood. In this research simulation of the flow which was caused by this equipment was carried out numerically, and the aspect of the flow corresponding to various conditions or the form of a lake was investigated. |

| Abstract | Area mesh statistics is a kind of small area statistics. The area mesh data of Japan can be created in a lot of way and many of them can be downloaded, for example, from the land's value information service which is provided by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Japan. We developed database of these area mesh data. By using mesh navigator software (Makita Naoki, 1997), which needs to run on ProAtlas2000 and Microsoft Access2000, we displayed the mesh data on the map. What visualized on the map is very convenient. For extending the advantages of area mesh data to spatial geographical statistics, we used PostgreSQL to develop a new database of mesh data. We also develop some programs in Delphi for the analysis of area mesh data, such as Histogram, Echelon analysis, and etc. |

| Abstract | Homo-and copolymers of poly(lactic acid) have gathered much attention because of their biodegradability and biocompatibility. They have numerous applications in the biomedical field due to their potential. In their polymers, we are interested in poly(lactic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol) block polymers. The amphiphilic triblock copolymers, poly(DL-lactic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(DL-lactic acid)(PLEL), have known to be surface-active ability. Therefore, we have studied emulsification properties with the polymers. PLEL were prepared by ring-opening copolymerization of DL-lactide and poly(ethylene glycol) catalyzed by stannous 2-ethylhexanoate. We prepared ethyl acetate-water-PLEL emulsion and applied this emulsion to biodegradable polymer scaffolds. PLA scaffolds were prepared by an emulsion freeze-drying method. These scaffolds were made by varying water weight fraction. Their surface pore size became larger with increasing water weight fraction. |

| Abstract | Recently, thermo-responsive polymer gels have been studied in various research fields such as drug delivery system. One of represetative thermo-responsive polymer gels is poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gel (PNIPAAm) that has a rapid and reversible volume phase transition. However, PNIPAAm is not biodegradable, resulting in limitation of its use in medical fields. Novel thermo-responsive polymer gel was prepared by closslinking of isopropylamine modified poly(succinimide) (IPA-PSI) (Poly[α,β -(DL-aspartate isopropyl amide)-co-(succinimide)]) with hexamethylenediamine. Because of peptide bonds in backbone, therefore, it is expected to possess biodegradability and biocompatibility. These gels changed their volume in response to change of environment such as temperature, pH and concentration of salt in water. Crosslinkage density and substitution degree of IPA-PSI affected volume phase transition bahavior of the gel. |

| Abstract | To examine the possible reuse of dredged sludge in view of construction material, physico-chemical properties and geotechnical characteristics of desiccated sludge are investigated through laboratory experiments. The consistency test, the pH test, the XRF test and the X-ray diffraction analysis are carried out for physico-chemical proteries, and the conolidation test and the permeability test are made for geotechnical characteristics. It is concluded that the history of desiccation changes the consistency of sludge and affects its permeability and consolidation bahavior. |

| Author | Mori, Yuichi| Fueda, Kaoru| Iizuka, Masaya| |
| Abstract | A variable selection method using global score estimation is proposed, which is applicable as a selection criterion in any multivariate method without external variables such as principal component analysis. This method selects a reasonable subset of variables so that the global scores, e.g. principal component scores, which are computed based on the selected variables, approximate the original global scores as well as possible in the context of the least squares. Three computational steps are proposed to estimate the scores according to how to satisfy the restriction that the estimated global scores are mutually uncorrelated. Three different examples are analyzed to demonstrate the performance and usefulness of the proposed method numerically, in which three steps are evaluated and the results obtained using four cost-saving selection procedures are compared. |

| Abstract | In the field of data analysis, including environmental data, it is important to know the shape of underlying density function. In this case, we often use histogram which provides an information about the board line of density's curve. However histogram can not be the best method when the true density function is continuous, as is often the cases. On the other hand, kernel density estimator is another popular one which gives a continuous function. In some practical cases, however, there is a case that some knowledges about the range of the data are previously given. For instance, data of percentage, such as mortality rate, only takes the values on [0,1]. This paper considers two different modifications in kernel density estimator for the data on known interval and compares them. |

| Abstract | This paper is a research report concerning the hydrodynamic simulation and the structural simulation by a particle approach. The proposal particle method model is introduced in this report, and the calculation example by the calculation code which uses the proposal model is shown. The high possibility of the particle method is shown by calculation examples which is difficult to solve by FDM and FEM. It is shown by caliculation examples of both the hydrodynamic and the structure analysis problems that the proposal model enables us to treat the fluid and the structure in a unified way. |

| Abstract | The Solomon Islands are known as a high endemic region of malaria. The resistance of Plasmodium falciparum to chloroquine has been confirmed since 1980 in the Solomon Islands, and the spread of chloroquine resistance is a big hurdle to malaria control. We have constructured the model for P. falciparum making allowance of chloroquine resistance. We distinguish the infection of resistance strains from that of sensitive strains in both the human and the vector populations. Since the overall parasite rate and the parasite rate of gametocytes for P. falciparum are strongly dependent on age, the human population is divided into 7 age groups in the model. The epidemiological parameters are determined by malariological survey in northeastern Guadalcanal (Ishii et al.) and the sporozoite rate in vector population is assumed as 0.1% based on the entomological study (Harada et al.) Our study aims at estimating the effect of mass drug administration under the presence of drug-resistance and also analyzing the escalation of drug-resistance through the transmission model for P. falciparum which can deal with chloroquine resistance. |
