| 抄録 | Currently, 26% of Japanese women in their twenties are under weight, and therefore at risk of developing various metabolic abnormalities due to an inadequate nutrient intake, which in turn affects the acquisition of a peak bone mineral density (BMD). In this study, we aimed to clarify the effects of menstrual cycle-related changes in body weight and bone metabolic marker levels on the BMD changes. The subjects were 42 women (19.6±0.8 years). The levels of osteocalcin (OC), BAP, s-NTx, u-DPD, and E2 in the menstrual and ovulatory phases were measured. The associations between dependent variables (BMD changes/year in the lumbar spine, femur, femoral neck) and explanatory variables (body weight changes/year, the levels of OC, BAP, s-NTx, u-DPD) were evaluated using multiple regression analysis. Analysis of the correlations between the changes in bone metabolic markers and changes in BMD showed a correlation between the OC level in the menstrual phase and changes in the BMD of the entire femur, suggesting that a high OC level protects against BMD reduction, probably by promoting osteoblast activity, and that bone formation activity suppresses the decrease in BMD. These results suggest that, to predict BMD changes from bone metabolic markers in young women, it is necessary to measure OC levels in the menstrual phase. |

| 抄録 | This study aimed to elucidate the relationship of prenatal and/or postnatal factors, including acquired factors, with the calcaneus stiffness index as measured by quantitative ultrasound (QUS-SI) in adolescents. We recruited 1,143 adolescents with a mean age of 14.8±1.8 years (501 boys and 642 girls). The subjectsʼ calcaneus QUS-SI was measured using an ultrasound bone densitometer. We also measured the subjectsʼ height, weight, and grip strength. Data on prenatal and postnatal factors were obtained from maternal and child health handbooks. A self-reporting questionnaire was used to obtain information on subjectsʼ secondary sexual characteristics and lifestyle factors. We found that maternal weight gain during pregnancy was independently associated with calcaneus QUS-SI in girls, and that grip strength was also significantly associated with calcaneus QUS-SI in both sexes. The present findings suggest that excessive restriction of maternal weight gain would have a negative effect on the calcaneus QUS-SI of girls, and that exercise and strength-building activities are likely to result in a higher calcaneus QUS-SI in both sexes of adolescents. |

| 抄録 | Little research has been done on the association between relaxation and health. In the present study, by conducting a nationwide cross-sectional survey, we aimed to obtain scientific data on the preferable forms of relaxation for health promotion, and to clarify the associations between specific recreational activities and self-perceived mental and physical health. We selected 4,000 households by stratified random sampling from across Japan in November 2009 and used the interview method to collect data (number of subjects:2,206). The questionnaire contained items on sleep, recreation status, recreational activities, and self-perceived mental and physical health status. We obtained responses from 1,224 adults (response rate:55.5%). Insufficient rest from sleep, short sleep duration (<6h/day), ineffective use of free time, and less free time used for activities other than rest showed independent positive associations with poor mental and physical health. The results of the logistic regression analyses showed significantly low adjusted odds ratios with regard to the status of poor mental and physical health for outings/walking among men (0.33 [95% confidence interval;0.16-0.68] and 0.49 [0.26-0.90], respectively), and for community activities among women (0.19 [0.04-0.79] and 0.27 [0.09-0.77], respectively). Relaxation for the promotion of health should include both passive relaxation (rest) and active relaxation (recreation). In addition, ensuring sufficient sleep duration is important for passive relaxation, and engaging in outings/walking for men and community activities for women are important for active relaxation. |

| 抄録 | The structural deficits and problems associated with application of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) were investigated. For this purpose, mortality statistics in Japan were examined for bias in the proportions of death causes classified using the ICD-10 four-character subcategory system, particularly the large distribution of cases classified under the .9 (unspecified) codes. The results showed that most deaths due to the 3 major causes were coded into the .9 subcategories. For example, 97.6% of the 607,065 deaths between 1995 and 2007 classified as I21 (acute myocardial infarction) were coded as I21.9 (acute myocardial infarction, unspecified). This suggests that the quality of the data recorded on many death certificates is poor. Thus, to ensure that the fourth-digit-level subcategories of the ICD-10 code system are effectively used to represent mortality data and actual causes of death in Japan, future studies should address the following objectives:(1) to minimize the discrepancy between the ICD classification terms and the names of diseases actually used in clinical practice, and (2) to actively raise awareness among physicians about the need to accurately record death causes on death certificates, since these records form the basis for determining mortality statistics in Japan. |

| 抄録 | The present study aimed to investigate the status of physical activity and the differences in psychological factors associated with physical activity from the perspective of transtheoretical model stages between prime- and middle-aged Japanese. The study involved 375 prime-aged volunteers (175 men, 200 women) and 557 middle-aged volunteers (247 men, 310 women) living in Kuse, a town in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. We found that the prime-aged men at the preparation stage had significantly higher self-efficacy scores than at the contemplation stage (p<0.01). Middle-aged men had significantly higher self-efficacy scores at the contemplation stage than at the precontemplation stage (p<0.001). Middle-aged women, meanwhile, had significantly higher self-efficacy scores at the maintenance stage than at the action stage (p<0.01), and at the contemplation stage than at the precontemplation stage (p<0.001). The present findings provide valuable information about the differences in psychological factors affecting physical activity between prime-aged and middle-aged community-dwelling Japanese. This information may be useful to health professionals as they develop effective community-based intervention programs for target populations. |

| 抄録 | In an attempt to determine the level and heat stability of residual catalase in somatic cells of acatalasemic Japanese, skin fibroblasts from an acatalasemic subject were cultured, and the catalase activity of the cultured fibroblasts was compared with that of cultured normal fibroblasts. Catalase activity was determined using an oxygen electrode. The residual catalase activity in cultured acatalasemic fibroblasts was 10% of the normal. The heat stability at 55 degrees C of residual catalase in the acatalasemic fibroblasts was similar to that of normal fibroblasts. |

| 抄録 | The clinical implications of a wider distribution of salivary type (S-type) isoamylase activity, as compared with that of pancreatic type (P-type) isoamylase activity in the serum of young female adults of 18-23 years old was studied. A high correlation existed between the S-type isoamylase levels in the initial determination and those in the second determination one year after on the same subjects, indicating that the wider distribution of S-type isoamylase level reflects an individual variation. The serum level of S-type isoamylase was highly correlated with the S-type isoamylase activity in saliva. Among the additional factors studied, a weak positive correlation was present between energy intake and the total and S-type isoamylase activities in serum. However, there was no negative correlation between the S-type isoamylase level and body mass index (BMI), which was reported for young male adults. |

| 抄録 | After the Second World War, the field of medicine has changed remarkably in Japan. A comprehensive health and medical care system has been organized to meet the increasing needs and demands for health and medical care services. Health centers have played an important role in promoting health care activities in the community. The authors describe the development of health centers and other health care facilities in Japan. The authors propose that it is necessary to build a new health facility specifically designed for public health nurse activities, termed a "public health nurse station". The authors also describe the status of the health care facilities in service and the activities of the stations and evaluated them. It is concluded that the stations have brought many changes in the field of health and medical care; moreover that the station should not become a substitute for a health center but should be a facility for public health nurse activities in a community. Health centers should also play important roles for comprehensive medical services in the future. |

| 抄録 | This study was undertaken to give scientific basis in introducing exercise into our daily lives. Fatigue scores, the Flicker value, the counter value, grip strength and counting steps were analyzed in 109 female high school students before and after physical education classes during the third school period. These female students were chosen because of their lower fatigue scores, particularly before lunch time. Fatigue scores were obtained in tumbling exercises, softball, badminton, team handball, basketball and a 2.2-km distance run during 50-min classes. Step-counting activities were the lowest in tumbling with 640 steps, and the highest in the 2.2-km distance run with 2,580 steps. In all activities except the distance run, fatigue scores decreased, and the Flicker value and the counter value increased after exercise. Grip strength decreased only in softball and the distance run. In the distance run, all measurements of the tests showed tendencies toward fatigue. However, with lighter exercises, the fatigue scores decreased by 1,760 steps; also, the Flicker value and the counter value showed improvement of physical function. Therefore, it is suggested that exercise having around 1,760 steps, corresponding to approximately 35 steps/min, might be the upper limit of physical load at which fatigue symptoms increase in a physical education class. Physical activities in the physical education classes showed two types of effects: recreational effects and training effects. |

| 抄録 | In this paper, we mentioned the apparatus developed to measure CFFs at the various point of the retina. Eleven CFFs measured at the central retina of both eyes (used usually} simultaneously, at the central retina of each eye separately, and at four points of the peripheral retina of each eye were analyzed together and referred to as the multi-point critical flicker fusion frequency (MCFF) . MCFF can be used to estimate the level of cortex activity, since the temporal and nasal parts of each eye are connected to different visual cortexes through the optic nerve. As the apparatus used to measure the MCFF was controlled by a micro-computer, the order of measurements and the calculation were done automatically. |
