抄録	A role of the global-scale Asian Monsoon on the rainfall climatology around the Japan Islands (excluding that in Hokkaido) during warm season were discussed by reviewing the previous studies including the original results by the present author. Not only the mean monthly rainfall amount but also its year-to-year variation is large from June to September (or October) there. While the rainfall amount and its variation are especially large in the Baiu season in Kyushu, they relatively large in autumn rainfall season (so-called the "Akisame" or "Shurin" in Japan) . It is noted that the huge northward moisture transport from the moisture-rich subtropical high area to the Baiu frontal zone is largely affected by the low pressure area in the subtropical region around South Asia. On the other hand, the low pressure area associated with the stagnation of typhoons around the Southwest Islands area (to the southwest of the Japan Islands) seems to play an important role in the huge moisture transport toward the japan Islands in the autumn rainfall season. A comment on seasonal persistency of the rainfall anomaly from spring to summer and summer to autumn is also presented by examining the monthly rainfall data in Nagoya, the central part of the Japan Islands.

Dynamic Behavior of Bed Material around Bridge Pier under Abrupt Change of Water Pressure

抄録	Major failure of structures usually occurs during flood flows due to scourin, sinking and sliding. These types of failure are considered to be in close relation to the dynamic behavior of bed material around the structures. Failure of bridges due to the phenomenon of scouring around piers is a common, natural problem of river hydraulics. Experiments were carried out to investigate the characteristics of pore water pressure and effective stresses in the bed material around a circular bridge pier under abrupt change of water pressure. A laboratory model was used to clarify the effect of the variation of water pressure to determine the mechanism of the collapse of circular bridge pier during flood or storm waves. The experimental results showed that the bed material under suddeen change in drop of water pressure near the pier was weakenend by an increase in excess pore pressure, followed by a considerable quick removal of bed material.

抄録	At Sekigane Hot-Spring, Tottori, Japan, where three hot-springs place side by side, the auther measured the variation of spring temperature, pH, Cl,- HCO(3)- and SO (4)-- content and the amount of flow, during and after, pumping suction of one hot-spring. About the variation of　other hot-spring, immediately after the commencement of suction, the content of HCO(3)- decreased and that of Cl-　and SO(4)-- increased. Then the increase of HCO(3)- content and the decrease of Cl- and SO(4)--contents appeared with the lapse of time. After stopping the suction, these changes in contents were reversed agaln, that is, the decrease of HCO(3)- and the increage of Cl- and SO(4)-- were observed. Immediately after the second　suction was begun, HCO(3)- increased and Cl- and SO(4)--　decreased rapidly. The amount of flow increased only when the pumping suction stopped. At the hot-spring which was pumped, HCO(3)- and SO(4)-- contents decreased and the slight increase was observed in Cl- content. Of cource, only when the suction stopped, the amount of flow decreased. But at these hot-springs, the ratio of Cl-/SO(4)-- has always constant value, about 1.05. These results　show that these three hot-springs belong to the same line and difference was observed only in the contamination with　ground-watres.
