抄録 | Seasonal influenza infection is a major challenge in public health. The term "seasonal influenza" refers to the typical increase in the number of influenza patients in the winter season in temperature zones. However, it is not clear how environmental factors within a single flu season affect influenza infection in a human population. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of temperature and humidity in the 2006-7 flu season on the onset of seasonal influenza using a case-crossover study. We targeted patients who attended one pediatric clinic in Okayama city, Japan and who were diagnosed as being infected with the seasonal influenza virus. Using 2 references (time-stratified and symmetric bidirectional design), we estimated the effects of average temperature and relative humidity from the onset day (lag0) to 10 days before (lag10). The total number of subjects was 419, and their onset days ranged from 26 December 2006 to 30 April 2007. While the onset was significantly associated with lower temperature, relative humidity was not related. In particular, temperatures before the 3-day incubation period had higher-magnitude odds ratios. For example, the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval for average temperature at time lag 8 was 1.12 (1.08-1.17) per 1.0℃ decrease. Low environmental temperature significantly increased the risk of seasonal influenza onset within the 2006-7 winter season. |

抄録 | There have been only 2 reports of a large-scale foodborne outbreak arising from Salmonella enterica serotype Braenderup infection worldwide. On August 9, 2008, an outbreak originating in boxed lunches occurred in Okayama, Japan. We conducted a cohort study of 786 people who received boxed lunches from a particular catering company and collected 644 questionnaires (response rate:82%). Cases were defined as those presenting with diarrhea (≧4 times in 24h) or fever (≧38℃) between 12 am on August 8 and 12 am on August 14. We identified 176 cases (women/men:39/137);younger children (aged<10 years) appeared to more frequently suffer severe symptoms. Three food items were significantly associated with higher risk of illness;tamagotoji (soft egg with mixed vegetables and meat) (relative risk (RR):11.74, 95% confidence interval (CI):2.98-46.24), pork cooked in soy sauce (RR:3.17, 95% CI:1.24-8.10), and vinegared food (RR:4.13, 95% CI:1.60-10.63). Among them, only the RR of tamagotoji was higher when we employed a stricter case definition. Salmonella Braenderup was isolated from 5 of 9 sampled cases and 6 food handlers. It is likely that unpasteurized liquid eggs contaminated by Salmonella Braenderup and used in tamagotoji caused this outbreak. |

抄録 | Epidemiological evaluation of rural population samples of Misasa, Tomari and Kofu villages in Tottori Prefecture, Japan (Fig. 1), for occurance of rheumatic disorders was performed. This region has an annual rainfall of about 80 inches. The principal occupations are farming, and fishery in part. 1. One thousand six hundreds and twenty-seven persons, age 30 and over were investigated by clinical and serological means. In this preliminary communication the prevalence of probable and definite rheumatoid arthritis, accoding to defined by the A.R.A. criteria, was 1.04% and low back pain-sciatic pain, arthralgia and painful shoulder (cervical spondylosis and so on) were 8.4, 8.9 and 7.1% respectively (Table 2 and 4). 2. Serum samples from residents in Misasa- and Tomari-districts were obtained and rheumatoid factor was tested by means of RA-test (Hyland Laboratories). The incidence of positive test was 3.2% in 407 males and 5.0% in 715 females, but there is no significant difference between the two. Concerning the effect of age, there was a general tendency for the proportion of positive test to be greatest in the older age groups (Fig. 2). 3. Serum uric acid concentrations of 230 males and 395 females were measured by the modified method of Folin-Wu (latron-kit-method). The mean serum uric acid concentration (with standard deviation) was found to be 4.02±0.18mg. per 100ml. for males and 3.38±0.13mg. per 100ml. for females (Fig. 3 and 4), and the differecne between the two was significant. The author found no gouty patient in this papulation survey. |

タイトル(別表記) | Epidemiological research of radioactive springs (Misasa Hot Springs) on circulatory systems. II. Incidences of abnormal ECG findings and hypertension (A preliminary report) |

抄録 | Misasa Hot Springs water contains 4.81-1169.2×10(-10) curie per liter of radon and its temperature ranges from 53.0℃ to 76.0℃. The authors examined one group of 265 residents who are living over 1 year at Misasa Hot Springs and another control group of 226 residents at the middle district of Tottori Prefecture, where the Misasa area is singular for its high radon concentration. A living environment of these two groups is of same condition, for example, dietarily or economically. The incidences of abnormal ECG findings and hypertension in the both groups was analysed stochastically and the results obtained were as follows: 1. The incidences of abnormal ECG findings were found less in the residents at the radioactive hot springs area than another residents at the middle district of Tottori Prefecture. 2. The difference in these incidences were found especially about the ECG findings due to functional disorderes, for example, sinus tachycardia and bradycardia, premature supraventricural and ventricural systole, atrio-ventricural block and right bundle branch block. 3. The ECG findings due to organic disorderes, for example, both auricural and ventricural hypertrophy or strain, myocardial and coronary arterial lesions, auricural fibrillation and left bundle branch block, were not found different significantly between both groups. 4. No difference of the incidences of the functional and organic abnormal ECG findings between both aging groups, over 60 years old, were found. 5. The incidences of hypertension were not found different between both groups. |

抄録 | A set of FORTRAN programs for small computer is described for deposit and retrieval of the epidemiological data, which have been compiled at the Kami-hojo-cho district in Feb. 1972and Feb. 1975. A data file is constructed on a magnetic disk. The following items are recorded and registered on the disk for every person: identification number, full name in Japanese alphabet, sex, date of birth, weight, height, blood pressures, chemical characterics of blood serum and urine, and various complaints of clinical significance (fever, morning stiffness, arthralgia, joint swelling, myalgia, cutaneous rash, aphthous stomatitis, dry eyes, dry mouth, joint deformity, subcutaneous nodules, lymph and parotid gland enlargement, struma, heart murmur, and neulogical findings). All information per one person requires only two IBM cards due to compact encoding of original records. The encode-decode procedures are explained also in the text. |
