Abstract In-situ determination of fundamental hydraulic parameters like variably saturated hydraulic conductivity (K(FS)) and the matric flux potential (Φ(m)) provides a foundation from which several other unsaturated soil parameters can be estimated, namely the Alpha (α*) parameter. This Alpha parameter is the one of the components of 3D unsaturated flow in vadose zone and its value is the measure of the capillary component of unsaturated flow pattern. Here an in-situ technique, Pressure Infiltrometer is introduced to record the steady flow rate applying a constant positive head on an unsaturated soil surface. The aim of this paper is to check the shape factor of 3D flow geometry and to find out its sensitivity on other unsaturated hydraulic parameters and to find out the influence of Alpha parameters on the results of the in-situ estimation of field-saturated hydraulic conductivity.

Abstract Surface air temperature distribution over the Ganges Delta Region of southwest Bangladesh and its tendency of warming are discussed through the analyses based upon the long-term temperature data from 1900-93. The data consist of two parts corresponding to the time-periods: 1973-93 and 1900-72. The study area is one of most affected places by the annual monsoon hydrological cycle and the present observation from these temperature data indicate that the surface air temperature gradient in the north-south direction is significant in the rainy season and that the temperature of the region is at an increasing tendency; the warming rate during the data periods (1900-93) on the long-term mean annual basis is estimated as 0.77℃ at Satkhira of the Khulna division and 0.29℃ as an areal average including the Barisal division, for the time difference of about half a century between the data periods before and after 1972.

Abstract The response on sandy seabed sediments to a harmonically oscillating water-table, with a special consideration of the wave-induced pore-pressure oscillations around a pipeline buried in seabed sediments, is studied in the present work experimentally and numerically. The aim of the analysis was: (1) to observe a true distribution pattern of the wave-induced pore-pressure oscillations acting on the pipeline outer surface, and (2) to verify small-scale test results using numerical computations performed for a wide range of saturation conditions of seabed sediments, under the assumption of a compressible two-phase medium compound of the pore-fluid and soil skeleton, as well as a finite thickness of a permeable seabed layer.

Abstract Let G be a finite group, Y a finite connected G-CW-complex, and let Ⅱ(Y) denote G-poset (in the sense of Oliver-Petrie) associated to Y. They defined the abelian group Ω(G,Ⅱ(Y)) consisting of all equivalent classes of Ⅱ(Y)-complexes. They also defined the subgroup Φ(G,Ⅱ(Y)) related to Ⅱ(Y)-resolutions. We call Φ(G,Ⅱ(Y)) the resolution module of Y. Applying the Oliver-Petrie theory to the universal covering space Y, we obtain the group Ω(G,Ⅱ(Y)), where G is a certain extension of G by π(1)(Y). Then the canonical homomorphism ν : Ω(G,Ⅱ(Y))→ Ω(G,Ⅱ(Y)) induced by the projection Y → Y is an isomorphism. In this paper, for G = Z(p)×Z(q) we construct a finite G-CW-complex Y such that π(1)(Y) Zq and ν(Φ(G,Ⅱ(Y)) ≠ Φ(G,Ⅱ(Y)), where p and q are arbitrary distinct primes.

Abstract Main content of this paper is to classify IQ individuals into two categories of normal and abnormal groups. It is too difficult to divide IQ individuals into two groups of normal IQ group and abnormal group because of sparse number of cases with mental retardation. Therefore, we examined a normality of 1673 IQ individuals, but a significant difference was noted for the IQ data. The lowest three mentally retarded cases of less than or equal to 59 IQ score were excluded, the IQ data then fitted to a normal distribution well. The critical value which minimizes the probability of classification is obtained on the basis on an approximate technique with regard to normality. An approximate probability of misclassification for individuals at random from mixture of two normal populations is 25.5%.

Abstract Exposure to ionizing radiation has been testified to have harmful effects on the developing human brain, particularly in the highly vulnerable period of 8-15 weeks after ovulation as an incereased frequency of severe mental retardation. However, the distribution of cases of severe mental retardation suggests a threshold in the low dose region. Data are composed of a binary (1,0) for mentally retarded or normal individuals. The statistical approaches with a threshold are conceivable for a simple, odds, logistic and Gompertz regression models. Estimation of threshold and 100(1-α)% confidence limits are derived from the maximum likelihood technique based on a profile approach.

Abstract The present paper deals with multivariate analyses applied to the maximum likelihood estimate(s) for (the mean vector and) the covariance matrix based on incomplete data, and derives influence functions for the mean vector, the covariance matrix and some statistics in multivariate analyses. Influential directions in the sense of Cook's local influence are also derived. A numerical example is given to show the usefulness of the proposed method.

Abstract Spatial data is analyzed in three stages of 1) estimating the variograms, 2) fitting a model for the estimated variograms and 3) predicting the value at unknown location based on the information at known locations (kriging). Recently, it has become a subject of interest to detect influential observations in these stages. Choi and Tanaka(1999) have derived influence functions in the above three stages and have proposed sensitivity analysis procedure. So far influence functions have only been derived for variograms by Gunst and Hartfield(1996). The present article makes a comparison of the performances between those influence functions for variograms derived by Choi and Tanaka(1999) and by Gunst and Hartfield(1996). A real numerical example is given to discuss the validity or usefulness of those influence functions.

Abstract We study unsteady flow that models lake flow in Kojima Lake. We assume that a lake is connected to another area with gates, and that those gates are opened when the water level outside the gates is lower than the water level of the lake. We study unsteady flow due to the opening of the gates. We analyze the problem with the finite element method, and take detailed structures of the gates into account.

Abstract We have estimated the degree of transmission of Plasmodium vivax malaria in Vanuatu Islands, eastern Melanesia with the aid of the computer simulations, which has been carried out on the platform of a mathematical transmission model. The malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax has a relapse character, which arises from hypnozoites in the liver. This phenomen makes a malaria control strategy difficult. When the mass drug administration is executed, the prevalence of Plasmodium vivax decreases moderately as compared with that of Plasmodium falciparum, and it recovers before long being affected by the relapses. The simulations suggest that one cannot attain the eradication of Plasmodium vivax malaria without the concentrated execution of the mass drug administration and the vector control that fairly reduces the vactorial capacity.

Abstract We tried an experiment to see whether or not it was possible to teach English considering the rising emphasis on TOEIC. Each of the three of us was in charge of five lessons out ot fifteen. One taught a section in listening in a language laboratory, another taught a section in grammer and vocabulary, the third taught a section in reading. There was no exam at the end of the semester, but mini-TOEIC tests were administered, and taking the TOEIC was mandatory. Students were evaluated on both their mini-tests and their TOEIC scores. Student evaluations reflected a positive attitude toward the course. Most students favored the standard of TOEIC as a test of course evaluation. Although we realize there are aspects to be improved (i.e., students' listening ability, class-time efficiency), we should continue to develop English ability focusing on the internationally established medium, TOEIC.

Abstract Many fertilizers are soluble in water, therefore their effect does not last for long time after fertilizing in soils. The nitrogenous fertilizers such as urea transported to groundwater cause serious agricultural contamination and health problems. To solve these problems, sustained release of fertilizer has attracted much attention. In this study, we attempted to prepare polylactide microcapsules with fertilizer by phase separation technique, which was a method of microencapsulation. Polylactide (PLA) was used as a biodegradable polymer bacause the biodegradable polymer has no influence on the soil and the ecosystem. The effect of preparation conditions such as stirring time and fertilizer concentration on morphology of microcapsule and on cumulative percentage released of enclosed urea was also investigated.

Abstract Recently, many antitumor agents developed. Irinotecan hycrochloride (CPT) has a great side effect even though it is well effective against the cancer. Drug delivery system (DDS) medicine indicates that the release rate of medicine is constant for a long time. Therefore, in order to materialize the general idea of DDS, we applied microencapsulation technique to prepare biodegradable polymer microspheres (MS) enclosing antitumor drug having no side effect. Polylactide microparticles enclosing antitumor agent were prepared by solvent evaporation method under various operation conditions. The effects of operation parameter on release rate of drug and morphology of microparticles were studied.

Abstract One-dimensional compression tests were performed to investigate compression characteristics of sludge cake used as a construction material. The sludge cake is dewatering product of dredged sludge from the bottom of a lake. The test results show following compression characteristics. (1) For the undisturbed samples, e-log p curves show compressibility of overconsolidated clay ordinatily observed. (2) For the disturbed samples, there observed compressibility close to that of ordinary normally consolidated clay. (3) For the recompressed samples, there observed two turning points on e-log p curve. The compression presures(p(c1) and p(c2)) at those points for the unsubmerged tests have a linear correlation with the recompression pressure(p(s)). The submerged tests give very small values of p(c1) and p(c2) compared with the case of unsubmerged test. (4) For the recompressed samples, the first compression index(C(c1)) after p(c) has a linear correlation with the initial void ratio(e(0)), and the second compression index(C(c2)) shows almost constant value.

Title Alternative Effects of ultrasonic treatment on the preparation of transparent glass-ceramic phosphor
FullText URL 007_113_118.pdf
Author Inoue, Teruhide| Nakashima, Mizuho| Nanba, Tokuro| Miura, Yoshinari|
Abstract The effects of ultrasonic surface treatment (UST) on the crystallization behavior and optical emission properties were investigated for the transparent glass-ceramics prepared from calcium aluminosilicate glasses co-doped with Eu(2+), Nd(3+). The glass-ceramics A were prepared by sintering a glass 45CaO・45Al(2)O(3)・10SiO(2) (mol%) containing 0.5Eu(2)O(3)+1Nd(2)O(3) under a 2% H(2)+98% Ar reducing atmosphere. In the glass-ceramics A, three crystalline phases, CaAl(2)O(4) (CA), CaAl(4)O(7) (CA2) and Ca(2)Al(2)SiO(7) (CAS) were commonly confirmed by X-ray diffraction. No drastic change in the amount of the precipitated crystalline phases was observed even in the case using UST of CA powders. It was suggested that the optical emission properties of the glass-ceramics A was responsible for the CA2 crystals. The glass-ceramics B were also prepared from a 51CaO・42Al(2)O(3)・7SiO(2) glass. The CA crystals were separately precipitated in the glass-ceramics B. In particular, a large amount of CA was successfully produced by stirring the UST suspension to prevent the sedimentation of the UST particles. The glass-ceramic B so-prepared showed strong photoluminescence but weak phosphorescence compared with other glass-ceramics B, indicating that the photoluminescence and phosphorescence were originated in different electron-trapping levels. The amount of the trap levels associated with the long lasting phosphorescence, such as oxygen vacancies, was probably small in the glass-ceramic B prepared with the stirring UST.

Abstract A few wheat varieties including two Japanese wheat varieties were evaluated for their salt tolerance at seeding stage, their behavior to increasing salinity levels and role of Na exclusion capacity in salt tolerance mechanisms. The wheat varieties were grown in nutrient solution and subjected to 0 (control), 25,75 and 125 mM NaCl salinity levels for 7 days. Although the shoot growth was reduced while Na contents were increased progressively with increasing salinity in all varieties, the varieties were quite different in their response. Salt tolerant va rieties maintained less reduction in their root and shoot growth and better water relations in their shoots than salt sensitive varieties under saline conditions. The wheat varieties were quite different in their Na exclusion capacity. Poor growth in salt sensitive varieties might be due to higher accumulation of Na in their shoots resulting from low Na exclusion capacity of roots, higher Na transport to shoot and/or inferior compartmentation capability.

Title Alternative Management of Rural Region in Association with Its Regionality of the Western Part of Tottori Prefecture
FullText URL 006_053_065.pdf
Author Ichiminami, Fumikazu|
Abstract In this paper the brief history, the status quo and the problem of regional management in association with its regionality were examined in Yodoe town and Mizokuchi town in the western part of Tottori Prefecture. These areas have the focus of Yonago city. Mt. Daisen and Kaike-spring have been well-known, and Tottori Flower Park recently attracts many tourists. However, agriculture also flourishes remarkably in these areas. Although Yodoe town has been celebrated for the waters and traditional umbrella, the town management recently makes the most of acorn and ancient tombs, giving emphasis to international relations and history. In Mizokuchi town the oldest legend of ogre has been investigated intently and the town management in connection with it has been proceeded. As these plannings use their histories and features peculiar to the area as a management concept, they have high originality. As a future problem, it may be necessary to built up a closer connection and coordinate each regional functions within the extensive areas.
