Title Alternative ScSp Phase observed on the Coast of the Seto Inland Sea
FullText URL ESR_1_19.pdf
Author Nishi, Masaki| Oda, Hitoshi|
Abstract Observation of ScSp phase, P wave converted from ScS phase, has been made at a seismological observatory (SBK) located on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea, southwest Japan. The ScSp phases were found on the seismograms of earthqukes with long epicentral distances, but not observed for those with short epicentral distances. Such dependence of appearance of the ScSp phase on epientral distance is interpreted as being due to the Philippine Sea plate horizontally lying beneath the Shikoku and Chugoku districts.

Title Alternative Water-soluble materials on volcanic ash from the 1990-94 eruption of the Unzenn volcano
FullText URL ESR_2_55.pdf
Author Akagi, Seishi| Yamamoto, Masahiro|
Abstract Water-soluble materials on volcanic ash from the Unzen volcano collected from February, 1991 to July, 1994 were chemically analyzed. They were similar in chemical characteristics to those obtained from other volcanoes. Chemical compositions varied even for materials from the same pyroclastic flow. C1 contens increased with increasing residence time of volcanic ash in air, but SO4 contents were almost fixed. It therefore seems that the reaction of volcanic ash with HC1 proceeds even at low temperatures, whereas the reaction with SO2 takes place only at high temperatutes.

Title Alternative Inversion of normal mode frequencies for estimation of lateral heterogeneity of the earth's elasticity atructure: A numerical test
FullText URL ESR_3_33.pdf
Author Onishi, Seiji| Oda, Hitoshi|
Abstract An investigation was made on effect of lateral heterogenity of the earth's elasticity structure on the normal mode frequencies. The lateral heterogeneity is expressed by an expansion of spherical harmonic functions, Pιm(cosθ)sinmΦ and Pιm(cosθ)cosmΦ, up to the second order harmonics (ι≤2). Free oscillation freguencies of the heterogeneous earth were computed by the xyz algorithm. Further we derived an analytic expression of partial derivatives of eigenfrequency with respect to the expansion coefficients, and performed a numerical test to verify whether or not it is possible to estimate the heterogeneity of the earth's structure by the inversion of noemal mode frequencies. When the earth is assumed to be elastically isotropic spheroid with short polar and long equatorial radii, frequency spectra affected by longitudinal heterogeneity terms, Pιm(cosθ)(sinmΦ, cosmΦ) (m≠ 0), for given values of ι and m coincide with each other, because these two terms describe the same heterogeneity when the earth is rotated by π/2m around rotation axis. In such a case, we cannot determine accurately the expansion coefficients of tha two heterogeneity terms by inversion of normal mode frequencies, whereas the coefficients of the latitudinal heterogeneity Pι0(cosθ) can be precisely determined. Therefore it is difficult to estimate of lateral heterogeneity of the earth's elasticity structure by the inversion of normal mode frequencies.

Title Alternative Three-dimensional structure of P wave velocity in the crust and upper mantle beneath southwest Japan
FullText URL ESR_4_1.pdf
Author Tanaka, Takashi| Oda, Hitoshi|
Abstract Trevel-time data of the P wave were inverted to study three-dimensional structure of the P wave velocity in the upper mantle and crust beneath the Shikoku and Chugoku districts, southwest Japan. Low-velocity and high-velocity regions were found in the upper crust of the eastrn and western regions in the Shikoku district, respectively. The activity of crustal earthquakes is high in the eastern region. Moreover a significant high-velocity region exists in the uppermost mantle, where the activity of small earthquakes is very high. A low-velocity region with velocity of 7.0km/s was found just above the descending Philippine Sea plate with high velocity of 8.0 km/s. This region is continued to oceanic crust in the vicinity of the Nankai trough and its velocity is nearly equal to the P wave velocity (6.7 km/s) of oceanic crust. Thus the low velocity is interpreted as the oceanic crust. A high-velocity region is found below the depth of 50km in the Shikoku district. This region suggests the Philippine sea plate lying horizontally from the Shikoku districts to the ocast of the Seto Inland Sea of the Chugoku district. A low-velocity zone suggesting the volcanic front is found around the depth of 50km at the coast of the Japan Sea of the Chugoku distrit.

Title Alternative Relative sea-level changes of the Okayama Plain Area during the Holocene, Southwest Japan
FullText URL earth_science_reports_011_1_33.pdf
Author Suzuki, Shigeyuki|
Abstract Postglacial relative sea-level change of the Okayama Plain Area has been analyzed. Former sea-levels were recognized by using peat beds and marine organisms which are also available for 14C dating. Peat beds were rhought to be formed under a stable sea-level condition. 14C ages of the analyzed peat beds were seprated by 4 groups ; 30~18 ka BP, 11~8 ka BP, 6~4 ka BP and 3~2.5 ka BP, indicate 4 stable sea-level periods. 2 transgressive events (18~11 ka BP and 8~6 ka BP) and one regressive event (3.5?~3 ka BP) were also inferred.

FullText URL EAR_13_1_15.pdf
Author Suzuki, Shigeyuki|
Abstract The study srea, Mizushima is occupied by polder and reclaimed land. The ground of this area is composed of the Holocene deposits below the surface. The deposits are mostly 10 to 20m in thickness and composed of 2 units, the B Unit and C&D Unit. The B Unit is composed of muddy sand with 2 to 3m in thickness. This unit is thought to be deposited in the mouth of paleoriver. The C&D Unit is composed of marine mud and sand with 10 to 15m in thickness. This unit is especially soft and will expand ground oscillations during an earthquake.

Title Alternative Storm surge in the Seto Inland Sea accompanied by Typhoons in 2004
FullText URL earth_science_reports_014_1_1.pdf
Author Asanuma, Tomomitsu| Tsukamoto, Osamu| Ogawa, Kouji|
Abstract In 2004, Seto Inland Sea coast suffered severe damages of storm surge. This area never experienced storm surge damage in recent half century and people were not ready for the storm surge. In two typhoons of T0416 and T0418, surge anomaly were more than 150cm in Bisan-Seto area. Storm surges appeared after the maximum approach of typhoon not only due to surface low pressure but also due to wind stress as westerly. Because of geographical complexity of Seto Inland Sea, the surge process have not been well understood. Therefore, it is necessary to study the effects of the wind and the surface pressure using a numerical model. Atmospheric model MM5 and ocean model POM were used as a numerical experiment, including the astronomical tide model NAO. As the results of numerical simulation of the storm surge, atmospheric conditions were well simulated but ocean model was rather complex. There are a lot of island in Seto Inland Sea and sea water movement in the model was very much influenced by the topography and wind stress effect appeared much smaller. In the no-island model, storm surge height was a little improved. However the simulated surge height was still less than the observed height. Further improvement of the ocean model application should be considered in future studies.

Title Alternative Survey Study of Resident Awareness on Waste Final Disposal Site
FullText URL 13_035_042.pdf
Author Na, Myungjin| Ono, Yusaku| Ono, Yoshiro| Kurihara, Koji|
Abstract As construction of final waste disposal site is essential recently, a problem where we should build it becomes important issue. However, public opposition occurs for the construction because the final waste disposal site has negative image such as pollution of various kinds, increase of traffic volume and noise by truck and bulldozer, and aggravation of living conditions. Public opposition is the most critical problem in constructing final waste disposal site. The source of public opposition has been characterized as NIMBY or not-in-my-yard. This paper presents a survey of the resident awareness on final waste disposal site, and attempts to find factors which affect the public opposition using logistic regression analysis and CART(classification and regression tree).

Title Alternative Vonnegut's Brain Computer Laying stress on Galápagos and Hocus Pocus
FullText URL 002_145_161.pdf
Author Morokawa, Shigetake|
Abstract As Kurt Vonnegut (1922--) has written his novels to give warnings about the growing danger of society, in the case of valuation, it is very important to understand what happened in his time and how his works resulted from a historic background. In the late of 1970's and 80's, society underwent a few big changes, for example, signs of communism collapse on a line of the Soviet Union's perestoroika, Japanese rapid economic growth, the unbalanced world economy by the heavy fall in stock prices in America and, in the field of science, the progress of computer technology in the use of a semiconductor instead of a vacuum tube. The mentioned above data were input into Vonnegut's Brain Computer. As a result, Galápagos was publishied in 1985, Hocus Pocus in 1990. In this paper, I analyzes Vonnegut's works from such a point of view, laying stress on Galápagos and Hocus Pocus.

Title Alternative Evaluation of Liquefaction Resistance by In-situ Testing and Its Application to Reliability Design
FullText URL 005_145_151.pdf
Author Nishimura, Shin-ichi| Shimizu, Hideyoshi| Fujii, Hiroaki| Shimada, Kiyoshi|
Abstract A calculation method of probability of liquefaction is proposed in this paper. The spatial variability of soil parameters for the dynamic shear strength, i.e., N-values, median grain size, fines contents, and the statistical characteristics of the earthquake frequency are considered in the analysis. The standard penetration test (SPT) is convenient to estimate the spatial variability of the dynamic shear strength and mainly used in this study. Furthermore the determination of dynamic shear strength based on Swedish weight Sounding test also introduced here, because it is the simpler test than SPT. While the statistical model of the earthquake frequency is determined based on the record of historical earthquakes. Using this method the probability of liquefaction is calculated. The sand compaction pile method is considered for the ground improvement against the liquefaction. Finally, the relationship between the sand replacement rate and the probability of liquefaction is clarified.

Title Alternative Management of Rural Region in Association with Its Regionality of the Western Part of Tottori Prefecture
FullText URL 006_053_065.pdf
Author Ichiminami, Fumikazu|
Abstract In this paper the brief history, the status quo and the problem of regional management in association with its regionality were examined in Yodoe town and Mizokuchi town in the western part of Tottori Prefecture. These areas have the focus of Yonago city. Mt. Daisen and Kaike-spring have been well-known, and Tottori Flower Park recently attracts many tourists. However, agriculture also flourishes remarkably in these areas. Although Yodoe town has been celebrated for the waters and traditional umbrella, the town management recently makes the most of acorn and ancient tombs, giving emphasis to international relations and history. In Mizokuchi town the oldest legend of ogre has been investigated intently and the town management in connection with it has been proceeded. As these plannings use their histories and features peculiar to the area as a management concept, they have high originality. As a future problem, it may be necessary to built up a closer connection and coordinate each regional functions within the extensive areas.

Title Alternative Damage factors analysis for small embankment dams due to the Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake special to Hokudan Town
FullText URL 007_055_074.pdf
Author Fujii, Hiroaki| Kunimasa, Kana| Nanba, Akiyo| Yokomizo, Takayuki| Nishimura, Shin-ichi| Shimada, Kiyoshi| Hori, Toshio| Nishiyama, Tatsuro| Wakitani, Yoshiaki|
Abstract This study was performed to clarify which factors affected damage to take-ike (small embankment dams for irrigation in Japanese) of Hokudan Town on Awaji Island in western Japan due to Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake. Multivariate and ordinary statistical analysis were carried out using documentary data (181 damaged and 328 undamaged dams), and ordinary one was done for the results investigated in situ. The model for the multivariate analysis was created with 13 items and 94 categories for 4 groups (Location, Geology Structure, and History of Dam). As a result, the factors causing to damage for dam are (1) the nearest fault (Nojima, Mizukoshi and D2), (2) embankment volume (the larger the more), (3) angle of crest axis to epicenter (diagonal and normal), (4) distance to the nearest fault (less than 500 m), (5) distance to the epicenter (8 to 14 km which almost agree to the location of seismic intensity 7 JMA), (6) play view of dam axis (3 or 4 axes), (7) angle of crest axis to nearest fault (diagonal and normal), (8) elevation of dam site (over 100 m), (9) surface geology of dam site (non-cohesive soil), (10) era of construction (prior to 1891), and (11) soil properties of embankment (constructed of sand, smaller penetration resistance).
