Title Alternative Vonnegut's Brain Computer Laying stress on Galápagos and Hocus Pocus
FullText URL 002_145_161.pdf
Author Morokawa, Shigetake|
Abstract As Kurt Vonnegut (1922--) has written his novels to give warnings about the growing danger of society, in the case of valuation, it is very important to understand what happened in his time and how his works resulted from a historic background. In the late of 1970's and 80's, society underwent a few big changes, for example, signs of communism collapse on a line of the Soviet Union's perestoroika, Japanese rapid economic growth, the unbalanced world economy by the heavy fall in stock prices in America and, in the field of science, the progress of computer technology in the use of a semiconductor instead of a vacuum tube. The mentioned above data were input into Vonnegut's Brain Computer. As a result, Galápagos was publishied in 1985, Hocus Pocus in 1990. In this paper, I analyzes Vonnegut's works from such a point of view, laying stress on Galápagos and Hocus Pocus.

Abstract Thermal 'staircase', a layer of constant temperature between the sheets of the steep gradients, was formed in the seasonal thermocline, which was 2.5 m above the bottom at a point of 18 m deep on the boundary slope in Lake Biwa. Following a sediment resuspension event when a moderate onshore wind blew, bed materials should be suspended up to the thermocline, then settled down forming a staircase above the turbid intrusion. Comparing the observed downward hear flux with the settling flux of sediment, it was found that double-diffusive convection would play an important role on the formation of the whole structure consisting of the staircase and turbid intrusion along with chemical anomalies and dense population of phytoplankters, which were fed by nutrients supplied from the bottom sediment under a typical condition of drought. Laboratory experiments were conducted to demonstrate the thermal and sediment processes in the stratified lake. Resuspension process due to surface and internal waves was examined using a tank with a sloping bottom, while the settling process was investigated by using a deep, diffusive tank. Formative process and scales of the staircase and intrusion were discussed relating with the intensity of resuspension and the buoyancy fluxes.

Abstract Partial least squares linear discriminant function (PLSD) as well as ordinary linear discriminant function (LDF) are used in pattern recognition analysis of writer identification based on are patterns extracted from the writings written with Hangul letters by 20 Koreans. Also a simulation study is performed using the Monte Carlo method to compare the performances of PLSD and LDF. PLSD showed remarkably better performance than LDF in the Monte Calro study and slightly better performance in the analysis of the real pattern recognition data.

Abstract A linear scattering inverse method based in the Kirchhoff approximation is formulated to determine the location and size of a crack in a solid. A characteristic function, which defines the size of a crack, can be reconstructed from the inverse Fourier transform of scattered amplitudes at far field. The inverse method is applied to ultrasonic data scattered by a crack in an aluminum specimen. Agreement between reconstructed characteristic functions and exact ones is not good enough, because experimental conditions do not coincide with theoretical ones. We can, however, evaluate the location and size of a crack from sharp minimum points reproduced at crack tips.

Abstract The author has proved the dimension formula of the space of the Hilbert modular type cusp forms of weight two. We present further refinements of the dimension formula for a real quadratic number field Q(√D), and calculate it effectively. We tabulate the dimensions for square-free natural numbers D below 104 with the computer assistance. We also determine all the spaces of their dimension below 10.

Abstract Let A be a bialgebra and let S be a right A-comodule algebra which has an A-comodule subalgebra T with common identity. We show that if S is a separable extension of T, then for a left A-module algebra K, K♯S is a separable extension of K♯T. Similar result holds for left A-module algebras and right A-comodule algebras.

Abstract In transformation groups on manifolds, it has been an interesting problem to ask whether for a given finite group G, there exists a real G-module V such that dim VP >2dimV>P for all subgroups P of prime power order and such that VH=0 for certain large subgroups H of G. This paper provides GAP programs to show that S5 does not admit such a real S5-module V.

Title Alternative Research on Prevention of Groundwater Flow Blockage by the Detour Permeation Method
FullText URL 002_033_050.pdf
Author Satoh, Tsuneo| Nishigaki, Makoto|
Abstract With the increase of underground construction in metropolitan areas in recent years, the problem of associated earth retaining works cutting off the natural flow of groundwater has increased in both scale and extent. The authors are proposing a new diaphragm wall method that does not inhibit the flow of groundwater. This paper describes the verification of the detour permeation achieved by the new diaphragm wall method and the experimental results related to the blockage of this groundwater flow.

Abstract Monodispersed porous polymer microspheres having diameter of ca. 50 μm were successfully prepared by suspension polymerization of styrene, polyoxyethylene methacrylate and ethylenegycol dimethacrylate. Monodispersed O/W emulsion was firstly made by SPG membrane emulsification technique, following droplets-swelling method of monodispersed seed emulsion by the addition of secondary emulsion. The effect of solvent used in suspension polymerization on porous structure of prepared polymer microspheres was investigated in this paper by identification with scanning electron microscopy, porosimeter and the performance in gel permeation chromatography. It was found that benzene, 1-butanol and butyl acetate worked as poor solvent for polymer prepared in this study and that polymer microspheres prepared with these solvents had larger pores. Gel permeation chromatography measurements indicates that polystyrene having molecular weight smaller than 50,000-100,000 can be clearly separated by using gel columns packed with polymer microspheres prepared with poor solvents.

Abstract We study a system obtained by coupling a nonlinear oscillator and a stationary system. We analyze the dynamics in a singular limit and show that asymptotically orbitally stable periodic solutions can exist. We also show how a slow oscillation can arise in the coupled system.

Title Alternative Evaluation of Liquefaction Resistance by In-situ Testing and Its Application to Reliability Design
FullText URL 005_145_151.pdf
Author Nishimura, Shin-ichi| Shimizu, Hideyoshi| Fujii, Hiroaki| Shimada, Kiyoshi|
Abstract A calculation method of probability of liquefaction is proposed in this paper. The spatial variability of soil parameters for the dynamic shear strength, i.e., N-values, median grain size, fines contents, and the statistical characteristics of the earthquake frequency are considered in the analysis. The standard penetration test (SPT) is convenient to estimate the spatial variability of the dynamic shear strength and mainly used in this study. Furthermore the determination of dynamic shear strength based on Swedish weight Sounding test also introduced here, because it is the simpler test than SPT. While the statistical model of the earthquake frequency is determined based on the record of historical earthquakes. Using this method the probability of liquefaction is calculated. The sand compaction pile method is considered for the ground improvement against the liquefaction. Finally, the relationship between the sand replacement rate and the probability of liquefaction is clarified.

Title Alternative Distribution and Age Structure of Population in Tottori City
FullText URL 005_121_144.pdf
Author Ichiminami, Fumikazu|
Abstract This study examined population data on the quarters or sub-areas in Tottori city in 1960 and 1995. First, the distributions of population data in both years were drawn, then the population changes and the rates were explained. While large increaces and high growth rates were scattered in the suburbs of the city, large depopulation and high decreace rates were clustered in the old core in the built-up areas and rural areas in the hilly and mountainous areas. Second, the rates of population under 15 years old and the rates of population over 65 years old were analyzed. Finally, the age structure of population was examined with 10 samples of the quarters or sub-areas in anticipation.

Abstract The release of histamine from basophils induced by anti-lgE and calcium ionophore A 23187 ( Cal) was examined in 27 patients with bronchial asthma and 7 healthy subjects, using a whole blood method. (1)The release of histamine induced by anti-IgE and CaI was significantly higher in atopic asthmatics than in non-atopic cases. (2) The histamine release with anti-lgE and CaI was significantly lower in cases with long-term steroid therapy compared to the release in cases without steroid therapy. (3) The release with anti-lgE and CaI was increased in cases with age of 0-39 years and in cases wpth age at onset of 0-39 years. (4) Anti-IgE induced release correlated to a certain extent with the release induced by CaI. These results show that basophil reactivity as expressed by histamine release changes under different conditions.

Abstract A dynamic response of a submarine pipeline buried in sandy seabed sediments to water loading generated by harmonically oscillating water-table vertical movements is examined in the present report experimentally and numerically. The aim of small-scale laboratory experiments was: (1) to record time-histories of pipeline vertical displacements, and (2) to observe a shape of slip surface of an overburden sand body involved in breakout together with the pipeline. A parametric study was carried out in order to investigate the influence of two meaningful factors, that is the depth of burial and the specific gravity of pipeline, on a gradual upward displacement of the pipeline. Based on a numerical finite-element 2D-analysis of the hydrodynamic pore pressure and effective stresses oscillations in the pipeline vicinity, an analysis of the pipeline stability potential is presented, in which all the experimental cases tested are verified. All important component forces (e.g., hydrodynamic uplift force) associated with floatation phenomenon of the buried submarine pipeline are considered and quantified.

Abstract Two optimization models are formulated based on different objectives for assisting the irrigation planner in making decision on agricultural planning during drought year. The sensitive degree of water shortage area in the irrigation project are classified by those models. They are solved by simplex method. Firstly, the Two-phase method is applied to analyze the artificial variables in the formulated model. Then, the formulated model is modified after getting rid of the artificial variables to obtain the feasible solution. The agricultural planning is planned by considering the classified area with social equity and economic improvement. Crop diversification is introduced to conduct in the very sensitive water shortage area and intermittent irrigation system is introduced to operate in the moderately sensitive water shortage area. The integrated farming system, the separation of land owner and cultivator and the disposition of substitute lots system are also suggested to conduct in this study project.

Abstract The response on sandy seabed sediments to a harmonically oscillating water-table, with a special consideration of the wave-induced pore-pressure oscillations around a pipeline buried in seabed sediments, is studied in the present work experimentally and numerically. The aim of the analysis was: (1) to observe a true distribution pattern of the wave-induced pore-pressure oscillations acting on the pipeline outer surface, and (2) to verify small-scale test results using numerical computations performed for a wide range of saturation conditions of seabed sediments, under the assumption of a compressible two-phase medium compound of the pore-fluid and soil skeleton, as well as a finite thickness of a permeable seabed layer.
