In this paper, the author clarifies the regional characteristics of medieval stone pagodas (hōkyō-intō 宝篋印塔) from the 13th to 14th centuries in Bizen, Bicchū, and Mimasaka provinces. The archaeological analysis was conducted typologically using 3D data from SfM and the physical and chemical analysis was conducted using magnetic susceptibility.
In Mimasaka, Bizen, and Bicchū provinces, the use of a common plan of a box-shaped pagoda was confirmed in the first half of the 14th century. In this region, the orientation of the width of the nine rings, the angle of the foundation tier shape, and other related characeristics were found to be consistent in all the analyzed pagodas.
In the latter half of the 14th century, not only did the number of pagodas increase but also pagoda shapes tended to display more variety, pointing to the possibility that several groups of stonemasons of different lineages were involved in the production of these pagodas.
