kn-abstract=This research aims to analyze the framework of green infrastructure (GI) plans and implementation in the City of Philadelphia, USA. Background of this research are challenges on creating a new type of holistic framework towards strategic GI planning and implementation. Research methods include a detailed literature review and interviews with the City of Philadelphia Water Department GI group, and consulting “Green City, Clean Waters (GCCW)” to understand the development and framework of GI planning. We identified three phases of GI planning and implementation by analyzing selected GI plans in relation to EPA GI planning and policy. In addition, we created a map and charts showing GI implementation in the City. Research results are as follows. First, this research clarified the development of GI planning in Philadelphia. In the timeframe, there are ‘Water quality control period’, ‘GI planning development period’ and ‘GI implementation acceleration period’; GCCW performed key roles in setting GI goals, visions and methods. In addition, GI partnership and the interaction between EPA and the City were confirmed. Second, Philadelphia’s GI planning to implementation framework with planning process, organizational structures, GI incentives and community engagement was revealed. Finally, through this research a holistic framework towards strategic GI planning and implementation was clarified.

kn-abstract=<p>A structural feature of hydrogen bonding chains found in the crystals of trifluoromethylated amino alcohols is reported. Hydrogen bondings of 3-(N,N-dialkylamino)-1,1,1-trifluoro-2-propanols construct chiral spiral hydrogen bonding chains. Lone pairs on the nitrogen atoms of the amino alcohols participate in two hydrogen bondings. Detailed structural analysis of the hydrogen bonds of the 3-(N,N-dimethylamino)-1,1,1-trifluoro-2-propanol suggested that the chain built up with alternating intermolecular medium and intramolecular weak hydrogen bonds. The medium intermolecular hydrogen bond, which transfers a proton from the hydroxy group to the amino nitrogen, would make a tentative zwitterionic form of the molecule. Then, electrostatic attraction between the charges in the zwitterion centers induced a weak intramolecular hydrogen bond.</p>

kn-title=Topichood of the Philippine topic Revisited from a cross−linguistic perspective

kn-abstract=This paper reexamines the nature of the so−called topic in Philippine languages, specifically its topichood in Tagalog, from a cross−linguistic perspective by comparing it with that of prototypical topic in other languages such as Japanese. The study reveals that its topichood is remarkable in its non-occurrence rather than its occurrence in sentences. It is also shown that although it exhibits similarities with prototypical topic in discourse in terms of its actor-orientedness, they also exhibit significant differences. I argue that one of the difficulties in identifying the nature of the Philippine topic lies in the fact that its choice is made by the interaction ofits sentential and discourse topicality itself with an independent grammatical characteristics that penetrates into the grammar of Philippine languages in general, i.e. patient-orientedness, and the relational balance between these factors can be different depending on transitivity of verbs and the degree of grammaticalization among different Philippine languages.

kn-abstract=MRI is a valuable tool for diagnosing heart disease today. The cardiac blood flow is determined by an MRI image analysis and expert system. Image data are taken by a TV camera and digitalized. After gray level thresholding and region segmentation, the boundary of the regurgitant flow region is precisely extracted. Using this expert system, a doctor can easily make an accurate diagnosis of the valvular heart disease. This method should prove useful for the diagnosis of various heart diseases.

kn-abstract=Enhancement in thyroid ultrasonography was investigated with thyroid lymphography by injection of Lipiodol into thyroid nodules in 50 patients. On plain thyroid ultrasonography (PU), the echo levels of normal and tumorous portions of the thyroid glands were evaluated. Then, the echo level ratios (P-N/T) were calculated. Moreover, by the same method, the echo level ratios between normal and tumorous portions of the thyroid glands were culculated 6 hours after Lipiodol injection (E-N/T), when the greatest enhancement was anticipated. The mean value of P-N/T was 1.305, and that of E-N/T was 1.474. The echo level ratio was significantly elevated in the enhancement method (p<0.0014). We concluded that the enhancement is obtained with Lipiodol injection into the normal portion of the thyroid glands, regardless of whether the tumor is benign or malignant and with or without cystic degeneration. This method is useful in promoting quality and location diagnosis of thyroid nodules. kn-abstract=Oral challenge with specific allergens is generally used to diagnose allergic gastroenteropathy, but no evaluation criteria have yet been established. Therefore, we examined allergological tests (skin tests, IgE RAST score), oral challenge tests with causative allergens and oral administration tests using sorbitol as a nonspecific stimulator or distilled water as a control. Phonoenterograms were recorded intermittently for up to 5 hours after the tests and analyzed by a pulse density program. The results showed that it is possible to classify allergic gastroenteropathy into six subgroups by the allergological tests, symptoms and intestinal motility analyzed by phonoenterography. Increase of bowel sounds with or without positive allergological test and symptoms indicates a high suspicion of allergic gastroenteropathy. These data suggest that phonoenterography is useful in the diagnosis of this disease. It should also be possible to diagnose latent cases of allergic gastroenteropathy by non IgE-mediated allergic reactions.
