The uptake of metallic mercury with ferric and ferrous ions was studied. The results were; (1) Mercury uptake of free ferric ion increased with hydrogen peroxide, the maximum uptake was 1.0 mM. However, ferric ion was not taken up without hydrogen peroxide. (2) In the presence of ferric and ferrous ions with hydrogen peroxide, mercury uptake was maximum when the mole ratio (Fe(3+)/Fe(2+)) was 0.1.

Crude Natto Hay Bacillus extract of catalase without hydrogen peroxide showed a 22% decrease with hydrogen peroxide. With hydrogen peroxide plus potassium cyanide, a 48% decrease occurred with hydrogen peroxide, in regard to the ability to take up mercury from air saturated with mercury vapour. Purified extract without hydrogen peroxide showed a 63% decrease with hydrogen peroxide compared to hydrogen peroxide plus potassium cyanide which showed a 76% decrease with hydrogen peroxide alone. Hydrogen peroxide plus sodium azide showed a 97% decrease with hydrogen peroxide alone. The results were similar to human and mouse normal and acatalasemic erythrocytes or mouse lung and liver homogenates. Natto Hay Bacillus extract of catalase took up mercury from air saturated with mercury vapour. This indicates that the catalase-hydrogen peroxide system plays a role in mercury uptake presumably by oxidation.

Out of 60 patients of transient atrial fibrillation including a case followed up for 12 years, 51 cases with unknown etiology or due to ischemic heart disease were studied in this paper. 1. Transient atrial fibrillation tends to induce cerebrovascular accidents although no direct relationship between the two was detected. 2. Transient atrial fibrillation combines frequently with sick sinus syndrome, especially with sinus bradycardia. 3. The cases combined with sick sinus syndrome have not only cardiac problems but also a higher risk of cerebrovascular accidents. 4. At the onset of atrial fibrillation, many cases complain of pollakisuria as well as other symptoms reported previously. 5. No apparent causes for atrial fibrillation was found in more than half of our cases. However, most cases had something to do with physical and/or mental stress.

We report a case of traumatic rupture of the chordae tendineae of the tricuspid valve with a congenital left pleuro-pericardial defect. The chest X ray film revealed a large cardiac silhouette which protruded to the left. Echocardiographic findings were: 1) large right ventricle and paradoxical septal motion 2) tricuspid regurgitatin which was recognized by contrast echocardiography 3) small left ventricle. This case also had a characteristic finding of systolic fine oscillation on the posterior tricuspid leaflet. Computed tomograms explained the discrepancy (protrusion to the left in chest X ray and small left ventricle): Computed tomograms of the heart revealed an enlarged right atrium and right ventricle associated with prominent clockwise rotation of the heart. Open heart surgery, performed successfully 16 years after the non-penetrating trauma, revealed the congenital pericardial defect which produced the findings of computed tomogram.

The antigenic properties of leukemic cells from five patients with adult T-cell leukemia were studied with rabbit anti-MOLT-4 and anti-human thymocyte antisera using indirect membrane immunofluorescent staining. The E rosette-positive, surface immunoglobulin (sIg) negative leukemic cells from these patients gave a positive reaction with appropriately absorbed antisera, which reacted specifically with thymocytes, cells from T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) and T-ALL derived lymphoblastoid cell lines (T-LCLs) and normal fresh peripheral T-cells. Nevertheless, antisera further absorbed with fresh peripheral blood lymphocytes (FN-PBL) lost almost all reactivity with the leukemic cells as well as with normal peripheral blood T-cells but still retained reactivity with thymocytes, T-LCLs and T-ALL cells. The results suggest that adult T-cell leukemic cells possess a mature T-cell antigen but not a thymus-specific antigen.

During investigation of the changes in mitochondrial function accompanying lipid peroxidation, it was found that a biscoclaurine alkaroid protected their functional changes. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Fe(2+) induces lipid peroxidation of isolated mitochondria, resulting in deterioration of oxidative phosphorylation. 2) This deterioration relates to alteration in ion compartmentation of the mitochondrial membrane and an increase in latent ATPase activity. 3) This deterioration by Fe(2+) in ion compartmentation of mitochondrial membrane is strongly protected by a biscoclaurine alkaloid, cepharanthine. 4) Cepharanthine also inhibits the mitochondrial. lipid peroxidation induced by Fe(2+). 5) The protective effect of cepharanthine against deterioration in mitochondrial functions caused by Fe(2+) depends on its inhibitive action on lipid peroxidation as well as on its membrane stabilizing action. 6) Cepharanthine inhibits the lipid peroxidation of soybean lecithine liposomes by (60)Co-irradiation. 7) The action of cepharanthine described above is common to head to head type of biscoclaurin alkaloids which have diether bonds.

Acid and heat-resistant proteins (thermosoluble proteins) were isolated from urine after exercise. These proteins were divided by starch block electrophoresis into 5 subfractions with 30 sections. Donaggio titer and protein measurement were done for each section, and the relationship between thermosoluble proteins and Donaggio specific activity (Donaggio titer/total protein concentration) was investigated. The results were: 1) The Donaggio specific activity of the 5 subfractions with 30 sections was maximum in the alb. ~α1-glob. region. It increased after treatment by heating at 100℃ for 10 minutes and acidification to pH 5. 2) A significant rise in the protein concentration of urine after exercise was observed in the alb. and αl-glob. regions. 3) The Donaggio specific activity of serum was higher than urine for equivalent protein concentrations. 4) Thermosoluble proteins were identified as Donaggio substances. The Donaggio specific activity of proteins was in the order of alb.,>α1-glob.>α2-glob.≫β-glob., γ-glob.. 5) The most important proteins contributing to the Donaggio titer were thought to be alb. and αl-AG, judging from correlation coefficients between Donaggio titers and protein measurement. The differences between alb. and αl-AG, before and after treatment were not statistically　significant. Measurement of thermosoluble proteins in urine may be a useful method of determining the magnitude of the load imposed by physical exercise upon an individual.

The uptake of metallic mercury was studied using erythrocytes with different catalase activities taken from various kind of animals. The results were: 1) The uptake of metallic mercury by erythrocytes paralleled the activity of catalase in the erythrocytes with and without hydrogen peroxide, suggesting that the erythrocyte catalase activity is related to the uptake of metallic mercury. 2) The uptake of metallic mercury occurred not only with purified human erythrocyte catalase but also with hemolysate. 3) The uptake of metallic mercury by purified human erythrocyte catalase was inhibited by inhibitors of catalase, namely 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole, potassium cyanide and azide. It was concluded that erythrocyte catalase activity has an important role in the uptake of metallic mercury.
