Acta Medica Okayama 1998 岡山粒子望遠鏡による海面位での大気宇宙線ミューオンの全方位測定 EN 宇宙空間から地球に入射する放射線のことを宇宙線と呼ぶ。この宇宙線は，地球に入射する1次宇宙線とそれが大気圏内の原子核と相互作用して生み出された2次宇宙線との2つに大別される。1次宇宙線は約90%が陽子，9%がα線である。これら1次宇宙線が大気に入射すると大気中の陽子，あるいは中性子と強い相互作用を起し主に多数のπ(パイ)中間子が発生する。そのうち中性のπ(0)は2つのγ線に崩壊し，さらにこのγ線は対生成を起しe(-)(電子)とe(+)(陽電子)を生成する。また電荷を帯びたπ(+)，π(-)中間子は，μ粒子(ミューオン)とυμ(ミューオン・ニュートリノ)に崩壊する。μ粒子はレプトンなので大気の核子と強い相互作用はしない。また，μ粒子はe(電子または陽電子)とυe(エレクトロン・ニュートリノ)とυμに崩壊するがπ中間子に比べ寿命が長いため，地表に到達する2次宇宙線の約70%がμ粒子である。1950年代から1980年代にかけてμ粒子の強度，および電荷比の理論的，実験的研究がなされてきた。これによりμ粒子の生成に関与したπ中間子やK中間子の割合を求めることができる。さらに，これから1次宇宙線のエネルギースペクトルや1次宇宙線が大気と相互作用するプロセスを導き出すことができる。また天体宇宙物理学的見地からは，地表にどの程度μ粒子が降り注いでいるかを知っておくことは必要である。最近では，ニュートリノ・フラックスの理論的計算を確かめるためにμ粒子のエネルギースペクトル及び電荷比がきわめて重要な指標となっている。というのは，最近のニュートリノ地下実験の報告によると，地下実験のニュートリノの観測値とニュートリノフラックスの理論計算に大きなずれが生じているためである。この意味においても十分な精度のミューオン強度の地上観測結果が要求される。理論的には全天頂角方向から到来するμ粒子のエネルギースペクトルが計算されているにも関わらず，実験では主に鉛直近辺と大天頂角近辺(75°〜90°)しか報告されていない。これは，巨大なμ粒子観測装置を垂直か水平に設置することは比較的容易であるが，いろいろな方向に向けることは難しいからである。これに対して，任意の方向からのμ粒子を観測できる宇宙線検出器「岡山粒子望遠鏡」の設計，建設，観測を行なった。「岡山粒子望遠鏡j は，サーボ・モータ・システムIこよる経緯儀になっており，コンピュータ制御により任意の方位角，天頂角に検出器を向けることができる。この機能は大気μ粒子の全方位測定に対して非常に有用である。さらに入射荷電粒子の電荷符号の判別，運動量の測定が可能である。本論文では，この「岡山粒子望遠鏡」を用いて天頂角毎の測定と方位角毎の測定を行い，大気μ粒子の全方位測定結果を示した。天頂角0°から81°までから到来するμ粒子を観測し，観測期間1992年から1996年，及び運動量領域1.5GeV/cから250GeV/cのデータを天頂角別に解析し，μ粒子の強度分布，電荷比(charge ratio)を運動量の関数として求めた。天頂角0°から81°まで2°刻み連続的なμ粒子強度分布はこれまで未測定であったが，本論文に示すように中間角度領域ではμ粒子強度に特異性がないことを示した。これによって，これまでに測定された狭い天頂角領域での実験や理論計算の結果を検討することが可能になり，本論文とのよい一致を見た。この一致は，理論の前提が示す全天頂角領域に対し，運動量領域1.5GeV/cから250GeV/cの範囲で，ミューオンがほとんどπ中間子からの崩壊の寄与に依存していること，K中間子の寄与は無視してよいことの恨拠を与えた。このことは1次宇宙線と空気核衝突においてK中間子が関与するような特異な反応は生じていないことを示すとともに，大気ニュートリノ・フラックスを推定する際にπ→ μυμのプロセスのみを扱えばよいことも示している。方位角毎のμ粒子測定に関しては，天頂角5°，20°，40°に対し8方位角方向を観測し，観測期間1997年から1998年までのデータを解析用に採用した。運動量領域に関して2.5GeV/cから3.5GeV/c(低運動量領域)，3.5GeV/cから100GeV/c(高運動量領域)までの2領域に分け，電荷別，方位角方向別にこれらのデータを解析した。この結果，低運動量領域において，特定の方位角領域でμ粒子強度が減少した。これは，地磁気の影響のために，特定の方位角方向からのμ粒子の通過距離が延び，μ粒子が電子及び2種のニュートリノに崩壊するためである。大気ニュートリノは，μ粒子の生成(A:μ粒子強度の天頂角依存性)，崩壊過程(B:電荷別μ粒子強度の方位角依存性)に1対1に対応するので， μ粒子のフラックスを求めることは，大気ニュートリノ・フラックスを求めることに対応する。このととを確証するために，本論文での解析A，Bからニュートリノエネルギーにして1GeVの，大気電子ニュートリノ，大気反電子ニュートリノ・フラックスを求め，相対変化の割合が数%であることを得た。さらに，海面位で，天頂角5°，1GeVの各々の大気ニュートリノ・フラックス比を求め，電子・反電子ニュートリノ，ミューオン・反ミューオンニュートリノ，ミューオン・電子ニュートリノ比それぞれ，1.23，1.02，2.26を得た。これらの比は，理論的に予想されるもの(それぞれ，1.24，1.04，2.48)に近い値であり，岡山粒子望遠鏡で大気二ユートリノ・フラックスを求めることができることを示した。 No potential conflict of interest relevant to this article was reported.
