Abstract TO THE READER by Bacon's secretary William Rawley when he published New Atlantis after Bacon's death is quoted here as a substitute for the synopsis of this paper : This Fable my Lord devised, to the end that he might exhibit therein, a model or description of a College, instituted for the interpreting of Nature, and the producing of great and marvellous works for the benefit of man ; under the name of Salomon's House, or the College of the Six Days' Works. And even so far his Lordship hath proceded, as to finish that part. Certainly, the model is more vast, and high, than can possibly be imitated in all things ; Notwithstanding most things therein are within men's power to effect・・・・

Title Alternative Mathematics and Mathematics Education

Abstract With the 17-th century an essentially new period in the development of mathematics began. The circle of quantitative relations and spatial forms of mathematics studied now was no longer exhausted by numbers, quantities and geometric figures. On this basis there resulted the explicit introduction into mathematics of the ideas of motions and change. Being inseparably connected with the needs of natural science, the accumulation of quantitaive relations and spacial forms studied in mathematics was continuously expanding. However, in addition to this quantitative grouth, at the end of the 18-th and the beginning of the 19-th centuries a number of essentially new features were observed in the development of mathematics. The enormous amount of factual material which had been accumulated in the 17-th and 18-th centuries led to the demand for a deep logical analysis and unification of it from a new point of view. In essence, the relationship between mathematics and natural science was no loss close but was now increased in complexity. The majority of new theories arose from internal requirements of mathematics itself. However, the circle of applications to problems of science and technology was greately expanding at this time. In this way, as a result of both the internal requirements of mathematics and the new needs of science and technology, the circle of quantitative relations and spatial forms studied in mathematics was greately expanded: relations between elements of arbitrary groups, operations in function spaces, etc. are now parts of mathematics. In this paper, we are concerned with mathematical thought. Several ideas of great scientists are introduced, and we know the essence of mathematical thought. The power of mathematical thought can be brought up by means of a deep thought. The relationship between mathematical thought and creativity is also studied.

Abstract The drop formation in immiscible liquid-liquid systems under mass transfer conditions was experimentally investigated. To know the exact effact effect of mass transfer on drop sizes, the decrease of interfacial tensions due to the presence of solutes has to be evaluate. Interfacial tensions of liquid pairs were measured with a Wilhelmy method as a function of the relative amounts at which both the solution and the solvent were mutually saturated. The interfacial tensions between the liquid pairs mutually saturated at on equal amount were found to be appropriate for the prediction of the drop formation accompanying mass transfer.

Abstract This paper presents a new method for prediction of consolidation settlements of soft grounds. The method is based on the theoretical result which shows that the settlement velocity of soft grounds non-improved or improved with sand drains decreases exponentially with time. Final settlements can be easily derived from the regression analysis for the relationship between the elapsed time and the observed settlement velocity. The method has advantages of its simplicity and capability to give the satisfactorily good estimate of the consolidation settlements, and also the support of the theoretical background.

Abstract In this paper the theoretical procedure to analyze the dynamic behavior of highly saturated sand bed around a cylindrical block under the cyclic loading of water pressure is developed. The fundamental equations were derived for the axially symmetric coordinates. Then, the finite element equations were developed to solve these fundamental equations numerically. Finally, the numerical method was verified by experiments.

Abstract We analyze some mathematical problems that arise in studies of phenomena observed in the cardiac action. We illustrate a method to characterize the response of a nonlinear oscillator to an external forcing, and introduce some numerical results. We also introduce some results of numerical computation in an example of a coupled system of an excitable system and a nonlinear oscillator.

Abstract This paper discusses a numerical model that can be used to optimize the installation in a zoned type and a homogeneous type fill dam. Before installation in a real dam to evaluate dam behavior, numerical model described in this paper is carried out on a prototype dam to check the optimum installation, using cross arm measurements. Three cross arm installations at the upstream, the core and downstream to measure displacements are considered. The installation options considered are three cross arm combinations for best installation to verify the safety of dams and to reduce cost. Finite element method is used for generating the displecement field in a linear elastic numerical model. The generated data is used as an input data in the back analysis to check the adequacy of each installation option.

Abstract Partial least squares linear discriminant function (PLSD) as well as ordinary linear discriminant function (LDF) are used in pattern recognition analysis of writer identification based on are patterns extracted from the writings written with Hangul letters by 20 Koreans. Also a simulation study is performed using the Monte Carlo method to compare the performances of PLSD and LDF. PLSD showed remarkably better performance than LDF in the Monte Calro study and slightly better performance in the analysis of the real pattern recognition data.

Abstract We treat the problem of water pollution by the method of a mathematical model. We illustrate the method of analysis with Kojima Lake. We analyze in-flow and out-flow of the lake, compute numerical solutions of the governing equations of the water flow and the pollutant. The simulation leads to the conclusion concerning the figure of Kojima Lake.

Abstract The author has proved the dimension formula of the space of the Hilbert modular type cusp forms of weight two. We present further refinements of the dimension formula for a real quadratic number field Q(√D), and calculate it effectively. We tabulate the dimensions for square-free natural numbers D below 104 with the computer assistance. We also determine all the spaces of their dimension below 10.

Abstract Let G be a topological group acting on S transitively from the left with a compact stabilizer K. We show that every isotropic (i.e. spatially homogeneous w.r.t. the G-actions) Markov chain on S can be lifted to a right random walk on G and give a one-to-one correspondence between the isotropic Markov chains on S and the totality of sequences of probabilities (ν,μ1,μ2,・・・) where ν is a probability on G/K and each μn is that on K\G/K.

Abstract Let A be a bialgebra and let S be a right A-comodule algebra which has an A-comodule subalgebra T with common identity. We show that if S is a separable extension of T, then for a left A-module algebra K, K♯S is a separable extension of K♯T. Similar result holds for left A-module algebras and right A-comodule algebras.

Abstract In transformation groups on manifolds, it has been an interesting problem to ask whether for a given finite group G, there exists a real G-module V such that dim VP >2dimV>P for all subgroups P of prime power order and such that VH=0 for certain large subgroups H of G. This paper provides GAP programs to show that S5 does not admit such a real S5-module V.

Title Alternative Consideration for the correlation between basicity of oxide glasses and chemical shift of O1s binding energy in XPS
FullText URL 003_145_156.pdf
Author Nanba, Tokuro| Miura, Yoshinari|
Abstract Binding energy of O1s core electron measured in XPS is a candidate to determine new scale of Lewis basicity of oxide ion in glass. Some mathematical expressions for the basicity or XPS chemical shift, such as charge parameter and optical basicity, are compared with experimental O1s binding energy in binary alkali oxide glasses. The expressions so far in use need some modification in parameters. A new empirical expression introduced in this paper gives new concept and universal scale of basicity.

Abstract The response on sandy seabed sediments to a harmonically oscillating water-table, with a special consideration of the wave-induced pore-pressure oscillations around a pipeline buried in seabed sediments, is studied in the present work experimentally and numerically. The aim of the analysis was: (1) to observe a true distribution pattern of the wave-induced pore-pressure oscillations acting on the pipeline outer surface, and (2) to verify small-scale test results using numerical computations performed for a wide range of saturation conditions of seabed sediments, under the assumption of a compressible two-phase medium compound of the pore-fluid and soil skeleton, as well as a finite thickness of a permeable seabed layer.
