| Abstract | The purpose of this study was to evaluate prognostic factors for epithelial ovarian cancer. We found that the pretreatment values of maximum standardized uptake (SUVmax) of the primary tumor by positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), tumor marker CA125 and C-reactive protein (CRP) were correlated with clinical characteristics and prognosis for such patients. The clinical parameters and prognoses and their correlations with SUVmax of primary tumor, CA125 and CRP were examined for 51 patients with primary ovarian cancer. The SUVmax of the primary tumor had a statistically significant association with stage (p=0.010) and histology (p=0.001). CA125 was significant associated with stage (p=0.011), histology (p=0.005) and lymph node metastasis (p=0.025). CRP was also significantly associated with stage (p=0.049). Disease-free survival rates of patients exhibiting a high SUVmax, CA125 and CRP were significantly lower than those exhibiting a low SUVmax, CA125 and CRP levels (p=0.008, 0.034, and 0.037, respectively). Furthermore, overall survival rates of patients exhibiting a high SUVmax were significantly lower than those exhibiting a low SUVmax (p=0.049).The high SUVmax of primary tumor is an important factor for identifying ovarian cancer patients with a predictor for poor prognosis. |

| Abstract | The link between changes in a subject's metabolic syndrome components and her estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was evaluated in healthy Japanese women. We used data for 53 Japanese women (46.0±10.9 years) with a 1-year follow up. eGFR was defined by a new equation developed for Japan. There were no significant relationships between eGFR and clinical parameters at baseline. Subjects were given advice for dietary and lifestyle improvement. At the 1-year follow up, eGFR was significantly increased. In addition, changes in eGFR were weakly correlated with systolic blood pressure(r=-0.306, p=0.0260). A decrease in systolic blood pressure may be associated with improving eGFR in Japanese women. |

| Abstract | The author investigated variation of non-protein-nitrogen (N-P-N) levels in the blood of patients with gastric ulcer or cancer before and after gastrectomy. The following results were obtained. In the cases of gastric ulcer, N-P-N levels in the blood increased significantly till the 3rd of 4th day after operation, and returned to normalcy within a week in both groups of early rising and thermal bathing, whereas the raised N-P-N levels returned to the former levels in the 2nd week in the control group. In the cases of gastric cancer, in both early rising and thermal bathing groups, N-P-N levels in the blood varied in similar ways as in the cases of gastric ulcer. However, N-P-N in the blood of the control group increased till the 3rd day, and then decreased till the 7th day after operation, but increase was again seen on the 10th day, and then the levels returned to normalcy. From the above findings, the author thinks that early rising and spring bathing after gastrectomy give no bad effect on patients with gastric ulcer and cancer. |

| Abstract | 1. A new method for the determination of cobalt in blood. The author proposed a new method for the determination of cobalt in blood by means of paper-chromatography. The procedure is follows. In a Kjeldahl colben, 5 m!. of blood is taken, and turned into wet ash with 3 ml. of HNO(3), 0.5 ml. of H(2)SO(4) and 1.5 ml. of HClO(4) and the ash aqueus solution is then neutralized with ammonium hydroxid, the neutralization being indicated by the development of color of 0.1% of p-nitrophenol (one drop) added to the solution. After addition of 2 ml. of 40% ammonium citrate, 0.5 ml. of 20% Na(2)S(2)O(3), 3~5 drops of H(2)O(2) and 1 ml. of o-nitrosoresorcine monomethyl ether (hereafter N.R.M.E.), the mixture is left for at least 15 minutes and the aqueus solution is taken in a stoppered test tube (inside diameter: 1.3 cm., hight: 16.5 cm.). The mixture is shaken with 2 ml. of carbon tetrachloride. Carbon tetrachloride is shaken with 5 ml. of 20% Na(2)CO(3) solution. Then the excess of N.R.M.E. is removed and carbon tetrachloride is concentrated on water bath to 0.3~0.5 ml. and all CCl(4) is used for a determination sample. The sample is placed on the paper (Toyo-filter paper No. 50 or 51A) in a thin line at a distance of 3 cm. from the edge, and the spot is developed with a mixture of 20 ml. of CCl(4) and 1 ml. of 90% ethylalcohoI. After development for 30~40 min., an orange-colored linear spot appears at a distance of 9~10 em. from the origin point. Spot intensity is measured at 460 mμ with Natsume's densitometer and quantitative estimation is made comparing with the standard graph. 2. Effects of radioactive thermal spring bathing and internal use of vitriol water upon cobalt levels in blood. As the author's method above-mentioned is able to determine the cobalt level in a small amount of blood, it is very convenient in investigating cobalt metabolism in the field of balneology. The author examined the changes of cobalt levels in blood after radioactive thermal bathing as well as after internal use of acid vitriol water. a. By the author's method cobalt in normal human blood was 0.4~3.6γ/100ml. in man (average: 1.6±0.4γ/100ml.) and 0.2~2.2γ/100ml. in woman (average: 0.7±0.3γ/100ml.). b. The cobalt levels in blood were measured by the author's method before and 5, 30, 60 minutes after the radioactive thermal single bathing, and before and 1, 2, 3, 4 weeks after a series of radioactive thermal baths (Rn-content: 10~30 Mache, 42~3°C., for 10 minutes). The cobalt levels in the blood of healthy subjects showed no significant change after the thermal single bathing, but those of patients with rheumatoid arthritis showed a slight increase on 3rd or 7th day and a fall on 2nd week of a series of radioactive thermal baths and then tended to return to the initial levels during the 3rd and 4th weeks of spa treatment. c. Thirty ml. of Yanahara mineral water (an acid vitriol water, pH: 2.2) was diluted with plain water to 200 ml. (Co(++)content: ca.3γ) and administered to healthy fasting subjects orally. Blood samples were taken from the cubital vein before and 1, 3, 6 hours after the intake of the vitriol water. The cobalt levels in the blood showed an increase of 14% of the initial levels at 1 and 3 hours and a decrease of 22% at 6 hours after the drinking of Yanahara mineral water. |

| Abstract | Healthy subjects 40 years old were used as controls in a study of stellate cells (S-100 protein-containing cells, or S-100 cells) in subjects with chronic alcoholism and fatty liver or fatty cirrhosis. S-100 cells were sparsely found in the adenohypophysis of control subjects, and these cells sometimes formed small clusters. However, in chronic alcoholics with fatty liver or fatty cirrhosis, the number of stellate cells in the anterior pituitary tended to be 17 times higher than it was in the control group. No increase in the number of S-100 positive cells that constitute the large and small follicles in the intermediate pituitary. The physiological function of the S-100 protein has not yet been identified. The fact that an increase in prolactin-secreting and growth hormone-secreting cells, as well as a decrease in gonadotrophs were observed in the hypophysis of alcoholics suggests that the function of stellate cells may be closely related to these phenomena. Our results also imply that the stellate cells found in the anterior and intermediate pituitary differ in function although they both produce S-100 proteins. |

| Abstract | In the present communication the recent works done by the Rheumatism Research Group of Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Okayama University, are described. The principal findings may briefly be summarized as follows. 1. Pathohistological pictures of the synovial membrane are classified into six types. Among them, Fibrinoid type and Follicular-Fibrosis type are the representative ones of chronic rheumatoid arthritis. 2. For the evaluation of the systemic as well as the local activities in rheumatoid arthritis and for judging the therapeutic effect, some indices have been established. 3. Injection of steroid hormones into the local joints fails to give satisfactory results in advanced, chronic rheumatoid arthritis. In such instances the flushing of the joint with physiological saline solution is effective. 4. In the case of chronic rheumatoid arthritis where the inflammation of hand and phalangeal joints is marked, RA-test gives rapid and more intense reaction, and most of such cases are of Follicular-Fibrosis type. 5. When lymph follicles appearing in the synovial membrane are stained when methyl green pyronine, the arrangement of lymphoid cells and plasma cells becomes distinctly clear. By micro-autoradiographic observations it can be seen that ³H-thymindine injected into the joint cavity is mostly ingested by the lymphoid cells in lymph follicles. 6. In the observation by the fluorescent antibody method multinuclear leucocytes found in the joint fluid and in the peripheral blood react with 19S and 7S-gamma-globulins. 7. When the serum and the joint fluid of the patient with rheumatoid arthritis are fractionated, they separate into three peaks at 19S, 7S, and 4S. Both S. S. C. A.-test and L. F. T. tests reveal the peak at 19S. The serum of chronic hepatitis positive to RA-test and the serum of rheumatoid arthritis are found to react immunologically the same to anti-β2 M globulin sheep serum. 8. When the reticulo-endothelial system of rat is blocked by 900,000 molecules of poly-vinyl-pyrroridon, the ability of antibody production is diminished. 9. Chemical synovectomy of injecting osmic acid is effective to FibrinoidCoating type. Its action mechanism lies in the complete cleaning of the surface of synovial membrane. 10. By radiating synovectomy with 193Au a fairly good result can be expected. 198Au is ingested by those cells in the surface layer of the synovial membrane and also by histiocytes in the synovial membrane. When 5 mc of 198Au are injected into the knee joint, a marked necrosis of the synovial membrane occurs. When 198Au is added to the ascites cells of rabbit during the tissue culture, in the concentration of over 14 μC degeneration of these cells can be recognized. 11. From the examination results of prognosis on those 25 cases with 41 rheumatoid knee joints after surgical synovectomy, it is considered that this method is indicated for Follicular-Fibrosis type. Ones with rheumatoid knee joint of Fibrinoid-Coating type gold sol treatment should be resorted to. In the cases of hand joints, surgical synovectemy is to be recommended at a relatively early stage. |

| Abstract | A retrospective study was carried out in 110 cadaveric kidney transplant recipients to compare the effects of low doses of cyclosporine (CsA), azathioprine (AZP) and steroids (triple-drug therapy) with those of higher doses of steroids plus AZP (conventional immunosuppression). Graft survival rate in the triple-drug therapy was 77%, 69%, and 69% at 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively. This was significantly better than 48%, 34%, and 29% in conventional immunosuppression. The incidence of acute rejection episodes was significantly lower in the triple-drug therapy than in conventional immunosuppression (25% vs 58%). In conclusion, our study shows that triple-drug therapy using low-dose cyclosporine is the safest of the immunosuppressive regimens and provides a beneficial effect on the long-term survival of cadaveric kidney transplants. |

| Abstract | Clinical features were studied in 125 patients with sarcoidosis (72 females and 53 males) diagnosed at Okayama University Hospital during a recent 10-year period. The age distribution had two peaks in patients in their 20s and the 50s. Over half of the patients were detected at health screening check and were asymptomatic, while the remaining were symptomatic. Twelve patients were in stage 0, 41 were in stage I, 54 were in stage II, 16 were in stage III, and 2 were in stage IV according to the chest x-ray findings. Serum angiotensin converting enzyme levels and serum lysozyme levels were elevated in 60% and 76% of the patients, respectively. The bronchoalveolar lavage fluid showed lymphocytosis, especially of helper T-cells. The clinical features of sarcoidosis appear to depend on the duration of the disease. |

| Abstract | 1. Mitochondria isolated from human liver, hepatoma and gastric cancer contain DNA. The DNA content per mitochondrial protein is about ten times as much in cancer as in normal liver. 2. Human liver, hepatoma and gastric cancer contain circular DNA molecules in their mitochondria. Circular DNAs from normal liver and cancer mitochondria are mostly about 5 μ long, and the frequency of circular DNAs of multiple or shorter length is higher in cancer mitochondrial DNA. The outline of the present paper was presented at the 26th Congress of Japanese Cancer Association (1967) (52, 53). |
