Objective: While investigators have reported that patients with GJB2-associated deafness and cochlear implants have preferable language development, the mechanisms of this phenomenon remains unknown. The goat of the present study was to assess higher brain functions of patients with GJB2-retated and GJB2-unrelated deafness as a method of evaluating language development.
Methods: Eight children with cochlear implants were subjected to genetic testing for GJB2 and underwent the Raven colored progressive matrices test, Rey's auditory verbal learning test, Rey's complex figure test, the standardized Language test for aphasia, the picture vocabulary test, and the standardized comprehension test for abstract words.
Results:Three children were diagnosed with GJB2-related deafness, and five children were diagnosed with GJB2-unrelated deafness. All three GJB2-related cases demonstrated normal range higher brain functions and fair language development. By contrast, one GJB2-unrelated case showed a semantic disorder, another demonstrated a visual cognitive disorder with dyslexia, and another had attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder.
Conclusions:Children with GJB2-unrelated deafness showed a high frequency of heterogeneous disorders that can affect proper language development. This difference between children with GJB2-retated and GJB2-unrelated deafness may account for the improved language development in children with GJB2-related deafness and cochlear implants. Further, genetic diagnosis of the non-syndromic hearing toss represents a useful tool for the preoperative prediction of outcomes following a cochlear implant procedure.
We have proposed a new measuring method for the softness of epidermis using rotational step response. It can be proceeded that horizontal torsional step is given periodically to the human skin surface by rotational step motor. Then dynamically epidermal characteristic is abstracted selectively from the human skin minimizing influence of the subcutaneous tissue. The cylindrical rotor is attached to the shaft of step motor and its external area is surrounded by the cylindrical guard ring; therefore, only human skin surface of inside the guard ring is screwed periodically by its rotor. At this moment, viscoelasticity of the epidermis is evaluated from analyzing the inducting coil of the step motor. The waveform of voltage of inducing coil can be characterized by overshoot P1, damping ratio D and undamped natural frequency ωn. The softness Ks that indicates viscoelasticity of the epidermis can be calculated from these parameters. Many experimental results showed that the softness Ks corresponds to the human sense and it is rational as a parameter for the human skin characteristics. This system is very useful as the measurement can be done easily, in vivo, and non-invasively. It also can be constructed simply without special mechanical sensor because step motor acts as not only driving but also sensing

in a general banach space z. it is well-known that the abstract quasi-linear theory due to kato [10, 11] is widely applicable to quasi-linear partial differential equations of second order and that his theory is based on the theory of semigroups of class (C0). (for example, see the work of hughes et al. [9] and heard [8].) however, even in the special case where a (t,w, v) = a is independent of (t, w, v), it is found in [2] and [14] that there exist linear partial differential equations of second order for which cauchy problems are not solvable by the theory of semigroups of class (C0) but fit into the mould of well-posed problems where the solution and its derivative depend continuously on the initial data if the initial condition is measured in the graph norm of a suitable power of a. (see also work by krein and khazan [13] and fattorini [6, chapter 8].) this kind of cauchy problem has recently been studied extensively, using the theory of integrated semigroups or regularized semigroups. the theory of integrated semigroups was studied intensively by arendt [1] and that of regularized semigroups was initiated by da prato [3] and renewed by davies and pang [4]. for the theory of regularized semigroups we refer the reader to [5] and [16].

In Section 3 we set up basic hypotheses on the operators appearing in equation (1.1), and prove a fundamental existence and uniqueness theorem (Theorem 3.6) for the Cauchy problem (1.1). In Section 2 we summarize some results on the generation of a regularized evolution operator associated with the linearized equation of (1.1), under the `regularized stability ' condition, and show that the family of matrix operators used to solve the linearized equation (1.2) satisfies the regularized stability condition. This fact will be useful for our arguments in Section 4.
thispaper is devoted to the well-posedness of abstract cauchy problems for quasi-linear evolution equations. the notion of hadamard well-posedness is considered, and a new type of stability condition is introduced from the viewpoint of the theory of finite difference approximations. the result obtained here generalizes not only some results on abstract cauchy problems closely related with the theory of integrated semigroups or regularized semigroups but also the kato theorem on quasi-linear evolution equations. an application to some quasi-linear partial differential equation of weakly hyperbolic type is also given.

Twenty-eight patients (56%) of the B-S group and 42 patients (84%) of the SJM group showed a good response to the exercise. There was no significant difference in the effective orifice area at rest among each sizes of the B-S valve. In the SJM valve, on the contrary, the effective valve orifice area increases in parallel to the size of the SJM valve. There was a clear relation between the valve size and pressure gradient. The pressure gradient directly depends on the valve size and the effective orifice area in the SJM valve. High pressure gradient group in both prostheses had a tendency to take negative values of percent increase in stroke volume. Further, there were no cases showing positive values of percent increase in end-diastolic volume among the patients whose pressure gradients were assumed to be more than 10 mmHg at rest. It is suggested that impairment of inflow caused by the artificial valve, prosthetic valve stenosis, is possibly a significant factor causing left ventricular dysfunction, notably a decrease in stroke volume during exercise.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

In the present study, we used ferric nitrolotriacetate (Fe-NTA, molar ratio of iron to chelators = 1:3), ferric ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Fe-EDTA, 1:3 complex) and ferric Desferal (Fe-Des, 1:1.1 complex) to see their "free" iron content in aqueous solutions in vitro and in the serum obtained after a single intraperitoneal injection of the chelates to rats (7.5 mg of iron/kg). "Free" iron was measured by the bleomycin-assay system. When Fe-NTA was dissolved in water, "free" iron increased linearly with total iron concentration up to 10 microM, whereas Fe-EDTA and Fe-Des showed no "free" iron with corresponding iron concentrations. When these three ferric chelates were dissolved in normal rat serum, "free" iron in Fe-NTA increased abruptly between 40 microM and 60 microM iron concentrations, then increased slowly up to 100 microM. Fe-Des did not show any "free" iron at comparable iron concentrations. Fe-EDTA had an intermediate "free" iron level in the serum. Serum concentration of IL-2 after a single subcutaneous injection of the IL-2 mp into C57BL/6 mice remained elevated longer than after an injection of aqueous IL-2. IL-2 in the serum became undetectable by 6h after a subcutaneous injection of 1 x 10(6) unit of IL-2 in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). In contrast, after a single subcutaneous injection of IL-2 mp containing the same amount of IL-2, the concentration of IL-2 increased to its maximum at 6h after injection, then began to decrease gradually. IL-2 was detected even on the third day after a single subcutaneous injection of one IL-2 mp. Augmentation of NK activity and generation of IL-2 activated killer cells were observed in the spleen from day 1--day 3 after a single subcutaneous injection of IL-2 mp into C57BL/6 mice. This activation was not observed following a single subcutaneous injection of the same amount of IL-2 in PBS. Each cytokine was administered alone or combined with phytohemagglutinin (PHA). Cellular DNA synthesis was assayed by the [3H]-thymidine incorporation method. The stimulatory effect of 500 u/ml IL-7 on PBMNC obtained from 19 patients with RA was significantly lower than on PBMNC from 19 healthy controls. However, the same degree of stimulatory activity of 500 u/ml IL-2 was observed on the PBMNC from both RA patients and control subjects. The response of PBMNC to a suboptimal dose of PHA (0.2 micrograms/ml) was enhanced by adding either IL-7 or IL-2 (100 or 500 u/ml) to the cultures. The enhanced synthesis of DNA by both RA and control PBMNC on exposure to IL-7 following stimulation by a suboptimal dose of PHA was higher than that of IL-2. The effect of IL-7 on RA PBMNC was significantly greater than that of IL-2 at the concentration of 100 u/ml on PBMNC from the same RA patients. The stimulatory activity of IL-2 at the concentrations of 100 and 500 u/ml on SF MNC and ST MNC exceeded that of IL-7. In particular, an IL-2 dose of 500 u/ml had a marked effect on SF MNC. Aneurysms were classified into five types according to the intraoperative findings: type 1, uniformly thin, smooth surface; type 2, thin neck and thick wall, smooth surface with or without red and/or transparent portions; type 3, uniformly thick wall, smooth surface with or without red portions; type 4, thick neck, bubbled or loculated thin wall at dome with or without red and/or transparent portions; type 5, thick wall in entirety, irregular surface with or without red portions. Five were type 1, six type 2, and 12 type 3. In four of the type 2 aneurysms, turbulence could be seen at the neck. In seven of the type 3 aneurysms, red and/or transparent portions were observed in the wall. Thirteen were type 4; nine of which had a bubbled or loculated wall with or without red and/or transparent portions. Four were type 5, with scattered red portions but a thick wall. Types 1 and 2 had few local changes in the wall, suggesting that aneurysms at this stage are stable. Type 3 is considered to be a transitional stage to type 4 from type 2. Type 4 aneurysms had some local changes within the wall including bubbles or loculi. Using a phantom, the authors developed and evaluated the performance of a new capacitive heating applicator designed for simultaneous radiohyperthermotherapy (SRH) in which the electron beam irradiation is provided from above an external capacitive heating applicator for the treatment of superficial and shallow-seated tumors. The trial applicator was constructed to fulfill the following conditions: 1. use of an electrode plate which does not affect the electron beam depth dose, 2. a uniform thickness to maintain flatness of the electron beam, and 3. a cooling function to prevent damage to normal skin tissue and enhance the therapeutic gain factor. This applicator was comprised of a 0.1-mm-thick copper electrode and a 5-mm-thick cooling chamber. The depth of the 80% dose of the new applicator was 21 mm with a 9-MeV electron beam and 36mm with a 15-MeV electron beam, which was comparable to the effect of a conventional irradiation bolus. The temperature distribution produced by the trial applicator was symmetrical on both sides from the center of the applicator. The 50% specific absorption rate region was 6.4 cm wide at a depth of 1 cm from the phantom surface and 2.8 cm wide at a depth of 3 cm. Concentrations of acidic and neutral amino acids in various tissues were determined 2 h later. In the rats fed the 25% casein diet there was a tendency for tissue amino acid and glutathione levels to be slightly lower than controls. In the 5% casein diet group, however, concentrations of tissue amino acids and glutathione generally increased after L-cysteine administration. S-(2-Hydroxy-2-carboxyethylthio)cysteine (HCETC,3-mercaptolactate-cysteine disulfide), though in trace amounts, was detected in kidney and blood plasma in the 5% casein diet group. Increases in cysteine-glutathione disulfide in liver, kidney and erythrocytes in the 5% casein diet group were considerable. These results indicate that L-cysteine was rapidly metabolized in the 25% casein diet group through the oxidative pathway, while in the 5% casein diet group, in which liver cysteine dioxygenase activity is supposed to be quite low, the oxidative metabolism of L-cysteine decreased and part of the L-cysteine was metabolized through the transaminative pathway. Our basic idea is to explore effective genetic information in the population, i.e., schemata, and to exploit the genetic information in order to guide the population to better solutions. Our coevolutionary genetic algorithm (CGA) consists of two GA populations; the first GA, called “H-GA”, searches for the solutions in a given environment (problem), and the second GA, called “P-GA”, searches for effective genetic information involved in the H-GA, namely, good schemata. Thus, each individual in P-GA consists of alleles in H-GA or “don't care” symbol representing a schema in the H-GA. These GA populations separately evolve in each genetic space at different abstraction levels and affect with each other by two genetic operators: “superposition” and “transcription”. We then applied our CGA to constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) incorporating a new stochastic “repair” operator for P-GA to raise the consistency of schemata with the (local) constraint conditions in CSPs. We carried out two experiments: First, we examined the performance of CGA on various “general” CSPs that are generated randomly for a wide variety of “density” and “tightness” of constraint conditions in the CSPs that are the basic measures of characterizing CSPs. In this paper, we propose a similarity-based self-constructing fuzzy clustering algorithm to do the sampling of instances for the classification task. Instances that are similar to each other are grouped into the same cluster. When all the instances have been fed in, a number of clusters are formed automatically. Then the statistical mean for each cluster will be regarded as representing all the instances covered in the cluster. This approach has two advantages. One is that it can be faster and uses less storage memory. The other is that the number of new representative instances need not be specified in advance by the user. The frequency of positive RAST score for inhalant allergens and LTB4 generation by leucocytes were significantly larger in previous and current smokers than in nonsmokers. 2. In nonsmokers, bronchial hyperresponsiveness was significantly higher in asthmatics under the age of 49 years compared with that in patients between 50 and 59 years, between 60 and 69 years, and those over age 70 years. In contrast, no significant differences were present between bronchial hyperresponsiveness and patient age in previous and current smokers. 3. In patients over age 60, bronchial hyperresponsiveness was significantly higher in previous and current smokers than in nonsmokers. There were 27(55%) steroid resistant patients who could not maintain platelet counts of 5×10(4)/μl with prednisolone doses of less than 10mg/day. Among the 16 steroid resistant patients treated with colchicine, there were 3 patients with complete remission and 3 others who had good to excellent response, that is, 6(37.5%) improved overall. This therapy was more effective than splenectomy (33.3%) and danazol (25%). Colchicine was did not effective in patients who did not respond to prednisolone, but was useful when patients showed at least a transient rise of the platelet count with prednisolone. In many cases, a response to colchicine was seen after a month, and in the patients who failed to show a rise in the platelet count after 2 months of colchicine therapy, no benefit was seen even when the therapy was continued. The pH of modified Kreb's solution was maintained constant by reducing the concentration of CO2 aerating the solution to 4% at 27℃ from 5% at 37℃. Log dose-response curves were constructed for pancuronium, vecuronium, pipecuronium, d-tubocurarine (d-Tc), metocurine and gallamine at 37℃ and 27℃, respectively. The slopes were not influenced by temperature. The ED(50) of pancuronium, vecuronium and pipecuronium at 27℃ were significantly smaller than that at 37℃. However, the ED50 of gallamine increased and that of d-Tc and metocurine did not change when temperature was lowered. In addition, the effects of lowering temperature (27℃) on the partial neuromuscular blockade produced by pancuronium, vecuronium and their 3-deacetyl, 17-deacetyl and 3, 17-deacetyl metabolites were studied. Neuromuscular blockade produced by pancuronium, vecuronium and their 3-deacetyl metabolites increased, while that by 17-deacetyl and 3, 17-deacetyl metabolites decreased when temperature was lowered. In the [5HT＋ADP] -induced aggregation. The inhibitory activity was in the order of (−)-desmethoxyverapamil (D888), mianserin (MA), ketanserin, AE>diltiazem, nicardipine, yohimbine. On the other hand, in the [ADR＋ADP] -induced aggregation, the inhibitory activity was in the order of MA, YH>D888, AE, and the rest had no significant effect even at 10 μM. Only AE among these drugs inhibited ADP-induced aggregation. The present findings indicate that the Ca antagonist D888, 5HT(2) antagonist MA and α(2) antagonist YH acted simultaneously as 5HT(2) and α(2) receptor inhibitors and imply an apparent interaction between these receptors. The extent of fibrosis in the myocardium and ultrastructural changes in the myocardial cells were respectively expressed in LM-Score and EM-Score. Furthermore, the myofibril changes expressed by the EM-Score were added to the LM-Score (Myo＋LM-Score), and each score was calculated and compared with the parameters of cardiac function. There was no significant correlation between EM-Score and parameters of cardiac function. LM-Score was correlated with Max dv/dt at r＝−0.471 (p<0.05) and with endodiastole (D/L) at r＝−0.567 (p<0.01) significantly, showing a negative linear correlation. Myo＋LM-Score was correlated with EF at r＝−0.574 (p<0.01) and with△ D at r＝−0.577 (p<0.01) significantly, showing a negative linear correlation. Among the cardiac functions at rest in patients with AR, the morphologic and diastolic parameters were closely related with the extent of fibrosis, and the contractility was closely related both with a change in myofibrils and with the extent of fibrosis. However, the changes of the ADT in the remote brain regions which receives no kindling stimuli remain unknown. To investigate the progressive neuronal changes during kindling, changes of the DAT were observed in the primary kindled sites and seconday unstimulated sites (pyriform cortex : PC and entorhinal cortex : EC) in amygdala (AM), hippocampal (HIPP) or neocortical (anterior portion of the suprasylvian gyrus : SS) kindled cats. The seizur threshold rapidly decreased, not only in the primary focus (AM or HIPP) but also in the remote brain regions (PC and EC), in the early process of acquisition of the limbic epileptogenesis and that the reduction of the ADT was closely related to the development of seconday epileptogenesis. In perticular, the PC could acquire the neuronal hypere xcitability during limbic kindling. However, in contrast to limbic foci, no signgificant changes of the ADT in either primary focus (SS) or secondary focus (PC and EC) was observed. Release of cardiac enzymes (CPK-MB and HBD), increase of left ventricular volume, and recovery rate of cardiac function were measured. The release of the enzymes during 60 minutes after reperfusion in the group receiving h-SOD (3mg/kg) was less than that of the control (without h-SOD)group (p<0.01). Myocardial edema (volume increase) was also reduced by h-SOD (1mg/kg or 3mg/kg : p<0.01). Recovery of cardiac function after reperfusion of the h-SOD group was better than that of the control group. The eosinophil chemotactic factor (ECF) derived from mononuclear cells has been reported to have some effect on the cell infiltration, and interleukin-5 (IL-5), a lymphokine derived from T lymphocytes, to be a factor related to growth, chemotaxis and activation for eosinophils. Lymphocytes accumulated in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluids of non-atopic and severe asthmatics have been shown to be highly responsive to Candida antigen, and high ECF production was observed in non-atopic and severe asthmatics by measurement of ECF activity in the supernatant of peripheral blood mononuclear cells cultured with Candida antigen. In this report, the molecular weight by gel filtration and inhibition test using anti-murine IL-5 antibody were studied to characterize the lymphocyte-derived ECF. Gel filtration analysis of the ECF indicated a molecular weight of 20,000 to 65,000 Da with a peak of activity around 40,000 to 50,000 Da. The ECF activity was reduced by incubation with anti-murine IL-5 antibody, which suggests that the supernatant contains IL-5. HLA-DR, ICAM-1 and TNF-α were observed using the appropriate monoclonal antibodies. However, expressions of these antigens on cultured skin explants were not influenced by treatment with ETA compared to the controls without ETA treatment. 160kD desmoglein T is known to have an important role in attaching epidemal cells and is the target antigen of pemphigus foliaceus (PF) antibody. We examined the effect of ETA on the binding of PF antibody to 160kD desmoglein T by indirect immunofluorescence, using a PE patient's serum. The intensity of the fluorescence of the bound antibody was clearly reduced by ETA pretreatment. The binding of pemphigus vulgaris antibody did not seem to be influenced by ETA pretreatment. ETA did not have any effect on the binging of pemphigoid antibody to the basement membrane zone. BAL examination was performed 2 hours after improvement of LAR, and leukotrienes (LTs) measured by high performance liquid chromatography. The level of LTC4 was significantly higher in BALF after LAR(p<0.05), and that of LTB4 was also high at LAR. The increase in the percentage of neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils were evident in BALF after LAR compared with the level in non-attack state and after IAR. However, little LTD4 was detected in the BALF after LAR. NNLA attenuated the vasodilatory effect of acetylcholine to less than 25% of the control, which indicates NO synthesis inhibition. NNLA caused a rightward shift of the adenosine dose-response curve with a significant increase of EC(50), whereas there was no significant change in the slope of the regression line calculated by log-logit transformation. by grammatical nleans. Although the concept of plural should logically be applied to countable nouns, there are quite a few examples found in actual use of the language where an uncountable noun takes a plural form. Some abstract nouns can be pluralized to denote individualized meanings or components, while others may be pluralized to emphasize the quality, condition or degree. The latter type is specifically called 'intensive plural' (or 'emotional plural' by some scholars). This article discusses the use of the plural of abstract nouns mainly through a corpus-based analysis of the three epistolary novels by Sanluel Richardson who is supposed to have given a remarkable
