Title Alternative
Iron and Copper Metabolisms in Hookworm Disease Part 3. Studies on Deposit Copper Content of Hookworm Disease
Author
Kitajima, Kazuo
Abstract
In the determination of the deposit copper content of the dog with hookworms and the rabbits given intravenous injection of serum containing hookworm anemizing factors by the Cartwright wetcalcification method, the following results were obtained. 1) The amount of copper stored in dog with chronic hookworm anemia increases mainly in the liver, and a slight increase has been recognized in bone marrow. 2) In the anemic dog died after taking precipitous course of illness and excreting bloody feces continuously after hookworm infection, the quantity of copper stored decreases in the liver, spleen and in bone marrow, while it is increased in the kidneys and duodenum. 3) In the rabbit given intravenous injection of the serum containing hookworm anemizing factors, the quantity of copper stored increases in the liver while it decreases slightly in bone marrow, coinciding with the stored copper in the case of the dog with chronic hookworm anemia. From these findings, the abnormalities in the copper metabolism in this disease seem to occur due to the interference with the mobilization of copper from the depot by hookworm toxin activated in the liver.
