| Abstract | Petrographic and phase chemistry studies of detrital grains were carried out on sandstones from the Lower Cretaceous Hayama Formation, Inner Zone of Southwest Japan, to determine their provenance and the tectonic setting during the early Cretaceous. The results of the modal mineralogy suggest that the Hayama Formation has magmatic arc provenance and that deposition of the sediments took place in the back-arc areas with detritus mostly derived from the magmatic arc and rifted continental margins. The chemical compositions of chromian spinel, chlorite and sphene indicate that significant proportions of the detrital grains were derived from mafic and/or ultramafic sources. The source areas are the mafic and ophiolitic rocks in the Sangun-Renge and Akiyoshi terranes and the felsic volcanic rocks probably from either the Akiyoshi terrane or a source not presently exposed in southwest Japan. However, minor amounts of the detritus were derived from the basement rocks; i.e., carbonates and siliciclastic rocks of the Akiyoshi terrane and the metamorphosed mafic rocks of the Chizu terrane. |

| Abstract | Neodymium (Nd) and strontium (Sr) isotopic data are presented for Paleoproterozoic metavolcanic rocks in the southern part of the Ashanti volcanic belt of Ghana. The metavolcanic rocks are predominantly basalts/basaltic andesites and andesites with minor dacites. Two types of basalts/basaltic andesites (B/A), Type I and Type II, have been identified. The Type I B/A are stratigraphically overlain by the Type II B/A, followed by the andesites and the dacites. The analyzed volcanic rocks commonly have low initial (87)Sr/(86)Sr ratios consistent with previous studies on Paleoproterozoic rocks from the West African craton. The LREE-depleted, tholeiitic Type I B/A exhibit back-arc basin geochemical signatures and show high positive epsilon Nd (i.e., ε(Nd) (2.1 Ga) = +3.89 to +7.21), which suggest a long term depleted source and also indicate that they were produced in an entirely oceanic environment devoid of influence of continental crust. The isotope signatures are thus consistent with the previously published trace element data of the Type I basalts/basaltic andesites in suggesting that their parent magma was generated from a depleted mantle. The Type I B/A have Nd model ages (T(DM2)) of 1.83–2.09 Ga similar to their formation ages, suggesting that they were juvenile at their time of formation. The andesites and the Type II B/A andesites show LREE-enriched patterns and exhibit characteristics of subduction zone-related magmas, and show initial ε(Nd) (2.1Ga) values of –1.15 to + 1.35 and Nd model ages (T(DM2)) of 2.32–2.58 Ga. The LREE-enriched dacitic porphyry also exhibits characteristics of subduction zone-related magmas, and have initial ε(Nd) (2.1Ga) value of –2.24 and Nd model ages (T(DM2)) of 2.64 Ga. The Nd isotopic data confirms the juvenile character of the Birimian crust, but also suggests some contributions of a pre-Birimian crustal material (or Archean?) in the genesis of some of the metavolcanic rocks. Our isotopic result is consistent with the island arc complex model which views Paleoproteozoic terranes of West Africa in the context of subduction–accretion processes. |

| Abstract | The immediate effects (IEs) and distant effects (DEs) of spa therapy were observed in 67 patients with steroid- dependent intractable asthma (SDIA). (1) The IEs of spa therapy evaluated one week after spa therapy were considerably high, and the efficacy rate was 61.5% in type Ⅰa, 82.7% in type Ⅰb, and 83.4% in type Ⅱ asthmatics. (2) The DEs of spa therapy on SDIA were also observed. The efficacy rate was 50.2% in type Ⅰa, 54.3% in type Ⅰb and 63.7% in type Ⅱ asthmatics. (3) The DEs of spa therapy were different between cases with and without maintenance therapy (MT). The efficacy rate of DEs was generally high (72.8~91.7%) in cases with MT, and low (16.7~40.0%) in cases without MT. These results show that MT is very important to keep the IEs of spa therapy high for a long time. |

| Abstract | Transferrin (Tf) is thought to play a pivotal role in iron metabolism of various kinds of cells. Tf has specific receptors on the surface of the cells that require iron. Tf-receptor binding is followed by internalization through a system of coated pits and vesicles. The rapid decline of pH of these vesicles leads to the release and sequestration of iron by the cell. Apotransferrin-receptor complex returns to the cell surface, where under neutral pH conditions, apotransferrin is dissociated from the receptor. Recent advances in cellular and molecular biology, gene cloning and monoclonal antibody technique have elucidated many features of these processes at a molecular level. These advances are briefly reviewed, and particularly, our own observations concerning endothelial mediation of uptake of Tf by hepatocytes are discussed. |

| Abstract | Histamine release from basophils induced by anti-IgE was studied in 8 patients with chronic bronchitis and 50 patients with bronchial asthma by analyzing doseresponse curves. As the result, there were no significant differences in maximum percent histamine release from basophils among three groups of healthy subjects (24.7± 14.2%), patients with chronic bronchitis (27.7±22.1%) and those with bronchial asthma (28.4±17.0%). In the patients with bronchial asthma, the maximum percent histamine release was higher in accordance with higher serum IgE levels, and low maximum percent release was observed in patients with intrinsic asthma (14.1±7.2%). Study of dose-response curves of anti-IgE-induced histamine release showed that a negative slope from E(2) to E(1) was observed in both healthy subjects and patients with chronic bronchitis. The majority of asthmatics with serum IgE levels of 501IU/ml or over showed a positive slope from E(2) to E(1). |

| Abstract | Photo-induced phenomena such as photoconductive and photovoltaic effects were investigated for the glasses in CdO-Bi(2)O(3)-Al(2)O(3) system. Photoconductive effect was characterized by a slow decay of photocurrent (persitent photoconductivity). The decay rate decreased with increasing CdO content and decreasing Bi(2)O(3) content. Photovoltage was very small at room temperature but increased to an obvious value on heating. The photoconductivity and photovoltage were increased with CdO content and enhanced by heat treatment in air. The valence band spectra of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the hybridization of Cd 4d and O 2p orbitals increases with decreasing Bi(2)O(3) content and increasing CdO content in the glasses. As the results maximum tends to flat. This type of band structure inhibits the rapid recombination of electrons and holes. The persistent photoconductivity of the glasses may be attributed to deep energy level of DX centers. Deep energy levels of the glasses are able to prevent the recombination because they have a repulsive barrier for both electron emission and capture. |

| Abstract | A pot experiment was conducted to study the relative performance of IR 6,KS 282 and IR 10198-66-2 rice varieties cultivated under salt-affected conditions at EC of 6.0,9.0 12.0 dS m(-1) in a sandy clay loam soil havig ECe of 1.6 dS m(-1) treated as control. Six seedlings of 39-day old transplaned to each pot having 12 kg soil. The fertilizer as nitrophos and potassium sulphate at the rate of 57.0, 25.0 and 50.0 mg N,P and K kg(-1) soil respectively was applied at the time of transplanting while zinc sulphate at the rate of 5 mg Zn kg(-1) soil and 43.0 mg N kg(-1) of soil as additional dose were applied 19 and 30 days after transplanting respectively. Normal plant protection measures like number of tillers, panicles, paddy grains, filled and unifilled grains, yield per plant and sterility were recorded and shoot and straw samples were analysed for sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride contents. It was observed that growth and yield of all the varieties were reduced significantly with increasing soil salinity. Na/K and Na/Ca rations in shoot and straw increased significantly with increasing soil salinity. It was also observed that higher values of Na/K and Na/Ca rations in shoots affected growth parameters while higher values of these rations in straw affected yield components and grain yield. However, IR 6 having relatively lower values of Na/K and Na/Ca rations proved to be the most salt-tolerant rice among the three varieties studied. |

| Abstract | Theoretical drainage equations are intensively tested in many parts of humid and arid regions and are commonly used in drainage design. However, this is still a great concern in Japan as the drainage design is exclusively based on local experiences and empirical basis. There is a need therefore to evaluate the theoretical drainage equations under Japanese field conditions to recommend equations for design of subsurface drainage systems. This was the main motivation for this study. While drainage requirements of different crops are difficult to define quantiatively, adequate drainage can probably be provided by designing for a given water table recession rate. The method used was to measure the rate of water table recession and drain outflow after cessation of a considerable amount of rainfall. Based on these measurements, soil parameters were determined and nine drainage equations were tested in simulating water table recession against actual field data of two drained experimental sites, located in Soja city west of Okayama prefecture, Japan, having drain spacing of 10 and 8.5 m for a period of two years. An experimental drainage equation was also derived and theoretical equations were recommended for design of subsurface drainage systems. |
