Abstract Looking back at over my years of teaching English at university, I noticed that despite the many changes, two things have remained the same in my classroom practice: the first day questionnaire and end of term reflective report. Out of the 14 questions on the first class inquiry, my favorite question is ‘What do you want to learn in this class?’ I find the most interesting answers are located here in terms of revealing students’ initial expectations of the course. Near the end of the term, I assign a reflective report on what they learned in this class. What makes the initial responses even more memorable is placing them into a learning opportunity perspective with their final self-perceived notion of what they achieved.

Abstract Analyzing of sedimentary facies and structure together with regional field mapping were studied in the mélange unit, upper Cretaceous Shimanto Belt, Wakayama Pref., SW Japan. The field survey was concentrated in the coast of Shiofuki-iwa, Miyama Complex, Hidakagawa Belt where soft deformations penetrate throughout the mélange unit. Brittle to ductile faults associated as later deformations are excluded. The mélange unit is subdivided into the Y-shear zone (YSZ) and P-foliation zone (PFZ). The YSZ is composed of thick lenticular sandstone (trends subparallel to the direction of the mélange), intense shear band (thin layer with concentrated prelithification shear deformation) and mudstone dominant mélange. The PFZ is composed of mudstone dominant mélange (associated with foliations which slightly oblique to the direction of the YSZ) and lenticular sandstone (slightly oblique to the direction of the YSZ). The intense shear band separates the YSZ and PFZ. Preserved radiolarian fossils free from deformation in the intense shear band is the evidence of the prelithification shear deformation in the mélange. A remarkable-fact is that the structures of mélange unit are formed under sinistral sense of shear. The mélange unit in the Shiofuki-iwa is ascribed to be formed by sinistral sense of shear during sediments were prelithified.

Abstract We developed a surface matching-type computed tomography (CT)-based navigation system for total hip arthroplasty (the N-navi; TEIJIN NAKASHIMA MEDICAL, Okayama, Japan). In the registration step, surface matching was performed with digitizing points on the pelvic bone surface after coarse paired matching. In the present study, we made model bones from the CT data of patients whose acetabular shapes had various deformities. We measured the distances and angles after surface matching from the fiducial points and evaluated the ability to correct surface-matching registration on each pelvic form, using several areas and numbers of points. When the surface-matching points were taken on the superior area of the acetabulum, the correction was easy for the external direction, but it was difficult to correct for the anterior and proximal directions. The correction was difficult for external and proximal directions on the posterior area. Each area of surface-matching points has particular directions that are easily corrected and other directions that are difficult to correct. The shape of the pelvis also affected the correction ability. Our present findings suggest that checking the position after coarse paired matching and choosing the surface-matching area and points that are optimal to correct will improve the accuracy of total hip arthroplasty and reduce surgical times.

Title Alternative The development of a scale to measure stress recognition during the treatment of diabetes patients

Abstract The purpose of this study was to establish a measurement scale for "stress recognition in receiving treatment" in patients with diabetes. A self-completed questionnaire was distributed to 149 type-2 diabetes outpatients in March-May 2015 after authorization from Okayama Prefectural University and the ethics committee of the hospital. The "stress recognition in receiving treatment" scale was designed as a second-order factor model consisting of 14 items and the following four factors : the respondent's sense of (1) the burden of being sick, (2) the burden on interpersonal relationships, (3) the burden of treatment, and (4) the burden of medical expenses. Stress recognition in treatment means recognition of being stressed in the burdens related to the illness, interpersonal relationships, treatment and medical expenses. The suitability of the questionnaire data was then evaluated with a structural equation model. The suitability of the factor model to the data satisfied the statistically acceptable standards as Comparative Fit Index (CFI) =0.931, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) =0.096, Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI) =0.946. As the construct validity was not examined by the scale created in this study or by existing scale, it was verified by using the degrees of mental healthiness and HbA1c that were proved to be associated with the sense of burden. In addition, the construct validity of the questionnaire was supported by a significant correlation between the Japanese version of the WHO-Five Well-being Index (S-WHO-5-J) and the patients' HbA1c levels. The use of this measure is expected to contribute to the early detection of a decline in a diabetic patient's activities of daily living and to the early confirmation of patients' support status.
