kn-abstract=@In this paper, authors analyze the changes in the national development strategies of the Polish government since the First World War, the state investment that became the driving force of economic development, the trends and positions of foreign capital, and the changes in the economic environment surrounding the Polish economy. @In the Second Republic, economic liberalism was a widely supported philosophy in the business world and academic society. However, in order to support very weak economic fundamentals, the government seized the key industry and tried to rebuild the economy. Although foreign capital played a very important role in economic development, Polish peoplefs distrust in foreign capital was strong. After the Great Depression, the Central Industrial Districti CUPj was built under the leadership of the government. However, with the outbreak of World War II, the formation of a strong core industrial base was suspended.
@After the Second World War, the government initially aimed to build a Peoples Democracy system based on pluralism. However, when the Cold War sharpened, rapid industrialization and collectivization of agriculture were forced. The Stalinist economic development strategy failed in a few years. Nevertheless, from the end of the 1950s, mining development and industrialization based on the mechanical and chemical industries were carried out again. This industrialization of capital goods sector-oriented production has distorted the peoplefs consumer life. However, in the long run, it cannot be denied that the industrialization of that time became the basis for the formation of the wide promising fields of the Polish industry. Since 1970, an open economic strategy has been adopted. Modernization was attempted by introducing licenses from the west. However, new investments did not lead to expansion of export, and cumulative debt increased. During the economic crisis, theg Solidarityh movement quickly grew into a national movement, but this did not lead to a fundamental economic system change. Economic reform was also attempted in the 1980s. However, the socialist economic system was unable to adapt to the new global economic system driven by innovation. The inflexible system lost its growth potential.
@After the collapse of socialist system in 1989, radical liberalization policies drastically improved economic imbalances, and the economic policy enabled high growth. During the transition period, foreign capital greatly contributed to growth. The automobile industry is a good example. This industry is associated with wide parts production. Many domestic intermediate goods manufacturers increased their orders, and their technical capabilities were rapidly improved through the guidance of foreign capital. In addition, export has improved significantly due to the expansion of production by foreign-affiliated companies. In contrast to the Second Republic, foreign capital played a major role in nurturing domestic industries. By the end of the 1990s, the Russian economy had had no effect on the Polish economy. At the transition period, the Polish industry shifted rapidly to the EU. At the same time, since the manufacturing field was the foundation of Polish growth, the impact of the 2007 global financial crisis wasnft serious. Not only that, Poland maintained positive growth in 2008 as most countries in Europe fell into negative Currently, low-wage, low-value-added production based on FDI inflows and abundant labor force is the driving force for growth. In the medium and long term, the Polish economy cannot grow if it stays in the current subcontract production status of industrialized countries. The key to Polandfs escape from the gmiddle-income traph is how to developg new Polish companiesh that produce high-value-added products and services under global competition.

kn-abstract=The neurobiological mechanism underlying the negative motivational component of withdrawal from acute opiate dependence is far from understood. Our objectives were to determine whether the glutamatergic system is involved in the motivational component of morphine withdrawal in acutely dependent rats and such an involvement is associated with dopaminergic neurotransmission. We examined the effects of various kinds of glutamate receptor antagonists on conditioned place aversion (CPA) induced by naloxone-precipitated withdrawal from a single morphine exposure 24 h before. Furthermore, the influence of pretreatment with the dopamine receptor antagonist haloperidol on those effects of glutamate receptor antagonists was also investigated. CPA was attenuated in a dose-dependent manner by all glutamate receptor antagonists examined including the NMDA receptor antagonists (+)-5-methyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclo-hepten-5,10-imine maleate (MK-801) and phencyclidine hydrochloride (PCP), AMPA receptor antagonist 1-(4-aminophenyl)4-methyl-7,8-methylenedioxy-5H-2,3-benzodiazepine hydrochloride (GYKI 52466), and metabotropic receptor antagonists (+/-)-2-amino-3-phosphonopropionic acid (AP-3) and (+/-)-alpha-methyl-4-carboxyphenylglycine (MCPG). The effects of MK-801, GYKI 52466 and MCPG were blocked by haloperidol.These results suggest that the glutamatergic system involving multiple classes of receptors plays a role in the motivational component of withdrawal from acute morphine dependence, and the function of the glutamatergic system would be closely associated with dopaminergic neurotransmission.

kn-abstract=Previous reports have indicated that Helicobacter pylori heat-shock protein 60 (H. pylori-HSP60), as an immunodominant antigen, induces interleukin (IL)-8 production in human monocytes. The exact mechanism by which H. pylori-HSP60 induces IL-8 production in monocytes has not been fully elucidated. In the present study, the downstream pathway by which H. pylori-HSP60 induces IL-8 secretion in human monocytic cell lines was investigated. Intact H. pylori, heat-killed H. pylori and H. pylori recombinant HSP60 (rHpHSP60) all induced the secretion of IL-8 and the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and p38, but not c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), up to 24 h in NOMO1 cells. The specific inhibitors PD98059 and U0126 (for ERK1/2 signalling) and SB203580 (for p38 MAPK signalling) down-regulated IL-8 secretion from rHpHSP60-treated NOMO1 cells. An anti-Toll-like receptor (TLR)2 antibody or TLR2 small interfering RNA (siRNA) partially inhibited the secretion of IL-8, and anti-TLR2 antibody also suppressed activation of ERK and p38 MAPK in rHpHSP60-treated NOMO1 cells. These reactions were associated with nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB)-mediated transcriptional activation, since U0126, SB203580 and the anti-TLR2 antibody decreased NF-kappaB activation. Taken together, the results suggest that ERK and p38 MAPK signalling linked to the TLR2 recognition receptor in human monocytes may be an important pathway in H. pylori-HSP60-induced IL-8 secretion.

kn-abstract=The most frequent type of rhizomelic dwarfism, achondroplasia (ACH), is caused by mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene. Mutations in FGFR3 result in skeletal dysplasias of variable severity, including mild phenotypic effects in hypochondroplasia (HCH), severe phenotypic effects in thanatophoric dysplasia types I (TDI) and II (TDII), and severe but survivable phenotypic effects in severe achondroplasia with developmental delay and acanthosis nigricans (SADDAN). To explore the molecular mechanisms that result in the different phenotypes, we investigated the kinetics of mutated versions of FGFR3. First, we assayed the phosphorylation states of the mutated FGFR3s and found that the level of phosphorylation in TDI-FGFR3 was lower than in ACH-FGFR3, although the other mutants were phosphorylated according to phenotypic severity. Second, we analyzed the duration of the phosphorylation. TDI-FGFR3 was not highly phosphorylated under ligand-free conditions, but the peak phosphorylation levels of TDI-FGFR3 and ACH-FGFR3 were maintained for 30 min after stimulation with FGF-1. Moreover, ligand-dependent phosphorylation of TDI-FGFR3, but not ACH-FGFR3, lasted for more than 8 h after FGF-1 administration. The other mutant proteins showed sustained phosphorylation independent of ligand presence. Third, we investigated the intracellular localization of the mutant proteins. Immunofluorescence analysis showed accumulations of TDII-FGFR3, SADDAN-FGFR3, and a portion of TDI-FGFR3 in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Based on these data, we concluded that sustained phosphorylation of FGFR3 causes chondrodysplasia, and the phenotypic severity depends on the proportion of ER-localized mutant FGFR3. In FGFR3 signaling, the transcription factor, signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis of chondrocytes. Here we reveal that phospholipase C gamma (PLCgamma) mediates FGFR3-induced STAT1 activation. Both PLCgamma and STAT1 were activated by FGFR3 signaling, but a dominant-negative form of PLCgamma (DN-PLCgamma) remarkably reduced STAT1 phosphorylation. Apoptosis assays revealed that the constitutively active forms of FGFR3 (TDII-FGFR3) and STAT1 (STAT1-C) induce apoptosis of chondrogenic ATDC5 cells via caspase activity. DN-PLCgamma reduced the apoptosis of ATDC5 cells expressing TDII-FGFR3, but over-expression of both DN-PLCgamma and STAT1-C induced apoptosis. Therefore, we conclude that a PLCgamma-STAT1 pathway mediates apoptotic signaling by FGFR3.

kn-abstract=Recent studies have revealed that the adult mammalian brain has the capacity to regenerate some neurons after various insults. However, the precise mechanism of insult-induced neurogenesis has not been demonstrated. In the normal brain, GFAP-expressing cells in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricles include a neurogenic cell population that gives rise to olfactory bulb neurons only. Herein, we report evidence that, after a stroke, these cells are capable of producing new neurons outside the olfactory bulbs. SVZ GFAP-expressing cells labeled by a cell-type-specific viral infection method were found to generate neuroblasts that migrated toward the injured striatum after middle cerebral artery occlusion. These neuroblasts in the striatum formed elongated chain-like cell aggregates similar to those in the normal SVZ, and these chains were observed to be closely associated with thin astrocytic processes and blood vessels. Finally, long-term tracing of the green fluorescent-labeled cells with a Cre-loxP system revealed that the SVZ-derived neuroblasts differentiated into mature neurons in the striatum, in which they expressed neuronal-specific nuclear protein and formed synapses with neighboring striatal cells. These results highlight the role of the SVZ in neuronal regeneration after a stroke and its potential as an important therapeutic target for various neurological disorders.

kn-abstract=BACKGROUND: The status of neuropathic pain alters the responsiveness to formalin injection in rats. However, the mechanism by which this alteration occurs is unknown. METHODS: We used immunocytochemistry to examine the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in the spinal cord of rats with L5 spinal nerve ligation (SNL)-induced neuropathy, and investigated the expression of c-Fos in the spinal cord after injection of formalin in the hindpaw of rats with SNL. RESULTS: Four weeks after SNL, the withdrawal threshold was significantly lower in the SNL group than in the sham-operated (sham) group (n = 12 per group, P < 0.05). In the SNL group, expression of BDNF in the L4 (P < 0.05) and L5 (P < 0.01) superficial dorsal horn was significantly decreased compared to that in the sham group. CGRP protein in the L5 but not in the L4, dorsal horn was significantly decreased compared to that in the sham group (P < 0.01). After formalin injection, spontaneous pain responses in the SNL group were significantly decreased compared to those in the sham group (P < 0.05). Immunolabeling for c-Fos was significantly decreased in the L4 and L5 dorsal horn in the SNL group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Our examination of c-Fos distribution indicates that decreased neuronal activity in the spinal cord in response to inflammatory pain may be important for altering the perception of acute pain. Decreased BDNF expression in response to SNL-induced neuropathy may be involved in this alteration.

Moreover, Hel-5 associates with the full-length isoforms of the Ikaros gene family, Ikaros, Aiolos and Helios, and inhibits their DNA binding activity when present in excess, leading to dominant-negative effects on the full-length isoforms of the Ikaros gene family. Our results suggest a critical role for Helios in the mechanism of leukemogenesis.

kn-abstract=We previously reported that 15-deoxy-Delta(12,14)-prostaglandin J(2) (15d-PGJ(2)), the most potent agonist for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma), induces apoptosis of human chondrosarcoma cell line OUMS-27. The current study aimed to explore the mechanism of 15d-PGJ(2)-induced apoptosis and inhibition of cell proliferation in OUMS-27 cells. The preliminary results of cDNA microarray analysis showed the down-regulation of anti-apoptotic Bcl-xL and up-regulation of pro-apoptotic Bax in the process of 15d-PGJ(2)-induced apoptosis. These changes were further confirmed at mRNA and protein levels by RT-PCR and Western blot analysis, respectively. Among cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, p21 was induced and up-regulated by 15d-PGJ(2), but p16 and p27 were not changed, suggesting that the involvement of p21 in inhibition of cell proliferation. Activation of caspase-3 by 15d-PGJ(2) was partly, but not completely, blocked by PPAR gamma antagonist (GW9662) suggesting the 15d-PGJ(2) exerted its effect by PPAR gamma-dependent and -independent pathways. Interestingly, immunohistochemical study on human chondrosarcoma samples revealed that Bcl-xL is frequently expressed by tumor cells. The results of the current study suggest that the potential ability of 15d-PGJ(2) in regulation of cell cycle and inhibition of Bcl-xL expression might be beneficial in the development of novel pharmacological agents for chondrosarcoma.

kn-abstract=Electronic structure of a single vortex (or vortex core structure) in type-II superconductors is theoretically discussed in the present thesis. Low-lying excited states in the superconductors due to the vortex, i.e., "vortex bound states," are examined in detail on the basis of numerical calculations. Two points are focused on: the effect of superconducting gap anisotropy on a vortex (Chapter 2) and the property of a vortex in quantum-limit situation (Chapter 3). The anisotropy of a superconducting energy gap has substantial effects on the structure of the vortex bound states. The local density of states around a vortex is calculated in a clean superconductor with the gap anisotropy within the framework of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity. A characteristic structure of the local density of states, observed experimentally in the layered hexagonal superconductor 2H-NbSe(2) by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), is well reproduced by assuming an anisotropic s-wave gap. The local density of states (or the bound states) around a vortex in superconductors with gap anisotropy is interpreted in terms of quasiparticle trajectories to facilitate an understanding of the rich electronic structure observed in STM experiments. This reveals not only a rich internal electronic structure associated with a vortex core, but also unique ability of the STM spectroscopy. The quantum limit means that the superconducting coherence length is small in the limit, i.e., it is comparable to the atomic length order. Focusing on quantum-limit behavior, fundamental structure of a vortex is studied by self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. The discreteness of the energy levels of the vortex bound states is crucial for the vortex structure in the quantum limit. The following are revealed by the study of the quantum limit. The vortex core radius shrinks monotonically up to an atomic-scale length on
lowering the temperature T, and the shrinkage stops to saturate at a lower T. The pair potential, supercurrent, and local density of states around the vortex exhibit Friedel-like oscillations. The local density of states inside a vortex core generally has particle-hole asymmetry induced by the existence of the vortex itself. Some essential properties of general vortices which are concealed within the conventional non-quantum-limit analysis can be extracted by the quantum-limit analysis. On the basis of the inherent particle-hole asymmetry inside vortex cores, it is discussed in this thesis that electric charging of a vortex core is originated from the Friedel oscillation of the Bogoliubov wave functions around the vortex (Chapter 4) . This mechanism of the vortex core charging is independent of the slope in the normal-state density of states at the Fermi level. The temperature dependence of the vortex core charge is also presented. It is expected that by using STM, information on the vortex core charging is extracted through a relation between the vortex core charge and the vortex bound states.

kn-abstract=Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) has been adopted as a means of strong respiratory support. In lung transplantation, reimplantation response is still a serious problem. It causes severe respiratory failure which is refractory to mechanical ventilation in some cases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of veno-venous ECMO after lung transplantation using a canine autotransplantation model. The autotransplantation model was created by keeping the left lung in a warm ischemic state for 2 h. After reperfusion, the right pulmonary artery was ligated. The following two groups were studied: Group 1, Control group, (no ECMO group) (n = 6). After reperfusion, both lungs were ventilated without ECMO. Group 2, ECMO group (n = 7). After reperfusion, veno-venous ECMO support was introduced with reduction of mechanical ventilation. In the no ECMO group, four of the animals died within 210 min after reperfusion. In the ECMO group, two of the animals died of severe pulmonary edema. Data of blood gas analyses (PaO2, PaCO2, and SvO2) after reperfusion were significantly better in the ECMO group, whereas there were no significant differences in both shunt fraction and pulmonary vascular resistance index. In this model with severe pulmonary edema induced by warm ischemia, veno-venous ECMO contributed to the improvement of hypoxemia and hypercapnia, but did not improve pulmonary hemodynamics.

kn-abstract=In hypertension, small arteries in a variety of vascular beds undergo structural changes that increase resistance. To assess whether there are differential structural changes in the penis that accompany hypertension, we began with determining structurally-based vascular resistance properties in penile and hindlimb vascular beds of adult spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. In anesthetized SHR, the penile and hindlimb vasculature were isolated and perfused, maximum dilation was induced, and a flow-pressure assessment and alpha 1-adrenoceptor agonist concentration-response curves were generated. Both the baseline and maximum constrictor responses were similar in the two beds of each strain, and overall the maximum structurally-based vascular resistance in SHR was higher than in SD rats. Our data suggests that the penile vasculature is not protected from the structural changes that take place in the other vascular beds in hypertension. There does not appear to be an underlying functional control mechanism that protects the penile vasculature from structural changes that may have a negative impact on penile blood flow.
