A report on the physically handicapped persons caused by rheumatoid arthritis in Tottori Prefecture, Japan

Abstract
The physically handicapped persons caused by rheumatoid arthritis were studied in Tottori prefecture in July 1973. The following results were obtained ; 1. The hand i capped per sons of 265, who were recognized as the handicapped by the government authori ties, were observed. The prevalence rate was 4.7 to 10,000 of the population and 15 to 1, 000 of the total number of the hand i capped. 2. The prevalence rate of the handicapped to the total number of patients with rheumatoid arthritis was 15.4%. 3. On a reginal distribution, the prevalence rate of the handicapped to the regional population were calculated between from 0.20‰ to 0.77‰. The result showed that it was higher at rural than at urban districts. 4. The prevalence rate to population gradually increased with aging, especially over the fiftieth years. The prevalence rate of the number of serious handicapped (class 1+2) to the total number of handicapped was regnlarly at 40% between 30 and 60 years of age, but it increased over 70 years of age. 5. The sex ratio of fernIe to male was 3.3 : 1 on the total handicapped and 2.9 : 1 on the serious handicapped persons. On the other hand, the ratio was 5.1 : 1 on the group under 59 year s of age and 2.4 : 1 on the groupe over 60 years of age at the total handicapped. And then, the ratio was 5.0 : 1 on the younger group and 2.6 : 1 on the older group at the serious handicapped persons.
