Title Alternative Reception and Skepticism of Science in George Eliot: In Focus of Lydgate's Portrait in Middlemarch (2)
FullText URL bgeou_148_109_118.pdf
Author Fukunaga, Shintetsu|
Abstract The purpose of the present paper is to keep track on the process of Lydgate's moral decline in Middlemarch. His idealism as a medical doctor is observed to be inadequate in rescuing himself from his ruined marriage. His bitter conflict with Rosamond, his wife, is seen to be partly due to her self-absorption, and partly due to his unquestioning reliance on his professional capability. Eliot's penetrating insight into the causes of their marital unhappiness is in focus upon relevant textual analyses. The author's artistic use of a family of metaphors is seen as carefully planned to be organically integrated into the fictional structure. This is, in our view, the secret of success in producing a rich echo of resonance in her style. Thus the story of the protagonist's pride, suffering, and incomplete redemption is traced from a stylistic viewpoint.

Abstract Thyroid stimulating hormone receptor antibody (TRAb) plays an important role in Graves' disease (GD). A second-generation measurement system has been developed and we have gotten a benefit by the system clinically. In this study, we determined 4 kinds of TRAb in 42 GD patients using the current and second-generation measurement systems to investigate the differences between them. The secondgeneration measurement system exhibited higher positive rates and inhibition rates of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) binding than those of the current system. Furthermore, 42 patients with GD were classified into 4 groups by GD activity. The actual values of all TRAbs and positive rates exhibited a tendency to increase significantly with GD activity. Of significance, 2 TRAbs in the second-generation measurement system exhibited high positive rates. However, all actual values of patients did not necessarily agree with these tendencies. The values of TRAb-human detecting anti-human TSH receptors at an approximate cut-off value reflected GD activity more accurately than those of TRAb-CT detecting anti-porcine TSH receptor. This suggests the possibility of specific differences between TSH receptors and further studies are required to further examine these effects.

Title Alternative Un-Words in Richardson's Novels
FullText URL bgeou_147_069_079.pdf
Author Wakimoto, Kyoko|
Abstract One of the stylistic features in Samuel Richardson's epistolary novels is an abundant variety of negative expressions. Among them is included the addition of negative affixes such as dis-, in-, un- and less, by which new words are produced to convey new meanings and ideas. The present paper aims at exploring Richardson's use of negative prefixes. Our focus here is put on the analysis of "un-words." Types and frequencies of the un-words examined through the corpus of Richardson's three works(i.e. Pamela, Clarissa and Sir Charles Grandison) are shown in four tables. Referring to the word lists in the tables, we discuss how and why Richardson may have tried to create new word forms.

Abstract Nowadays, some students in China often use on-line translators when they have to write papers, especially the abstract in English or in Japanese. However, the morphological and syntactic differences in Chinese, English and Japanese frequently lead to problems in translation. The present paper aims at exploring the major morphological and syntactic differences among the three languages and demonstrating how these major differences affect translation rendered by on-line translators. Totally, 8 main differences are identified and illustrated with examples. The study might be helpful for the Chinese users of on-line translators and their developers.

Title Alternative Reception and Skepticism of Science in George Eliot: In Focus of Lydgate's Portrait in Middlemarch (1)
FullText URL bgeou_147_027_034.pdf
Author Fukunaga, Shintetsu|
Abstract We aim at clarifying how scientific world view and its methods are penetrated into the text of Middlemarch, and how scientific way of thinking and language contribute to changing the structure and style of the English novel. With this sense of awareness in view, we try to make clear how George Eliot attempts to reconcile the conflict between her cherished Christian outlook and terminology with the method of verifying hypotheses through experiments. Among the author's fictional presentations, we find that a heated discussion between biblical language and physiological, psychological one is evident in the protagonists portraits. For an example of this, we take up specific passages of Lydgate's delineation, and analyze how the novelist explored an innovative method of enlarging the dimension in character portrait.
