英国文化論考：『チャタリー夫人の恋人』に描かれたロレンスの故郷での場合

世界に先駆けて産業革命を成し遂げ七つの海を支配した英国の近代機械・産業文明の発展とは反比例するかのように破壊され消滅していく自然の森林と田園。それはかつて英国の中部一帯に広がっていたロビン・フッドの活躍したシャーウッドの森とて例外ではない。そこで現在わずかに残存しているその森の一部を含めてロレンス自身が「わが心のふるさと」と呼んだ生まれ故郷イーストウッドが、彼の最後の小説『チャタリー夫人の恋人』の中にどのように採り入れられ、どのように描写されているかを考察することにより、英国文化の偉大なる伝統が如何なるものであるかのその一端なりを論じてみる。

The mines had made the halls wealthy. Now they were blotting them out, as they had already blotted out the cottages. The industrial England blots out the agricultural England. One meaning blots out another. The new England blots out the old England...."
