| Abstract | As everybody knows, China is growing very rapidly since the opening of the country in 1978.The real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of China in 2006 has more than 13 times larger than that of 1978. If we suppose the real GDP in 1978 is 100, then we can get 1335 in 2006. Also, the real growth rate of China is almost 10% annually during the same period ( Ke,2006) and people in the world are amazed to know it. It is often said that the sum of China's GDP will surpass Japan's within a decade or less, if China continues to grow. With the continuation of the growth of Chinese economy, many companies in the world, especially US, European and Japanese companies have already gone into China either to produce goods for exporting back to home country or to foreign countries (export market-oriented) or to produce goods for Chinese domestic market (domestic market-oriented) or both, in any case, exploiting the use of inexpensive labor forces. In fact, foreign countries, of course the main actors are multinational corporations (MNCs) , have heavily invested in China. For example, the total accumulated amount of foreign direct investment (FDI, stock base) from Japan to the world has amounted to $449.6bn. in 2006, of which China has received $30.3bn. (6.3%) , the fourth rank, following the U.S. ($156.4bn., 34.8%) , Holland ($45.4bn., 10.1%) , and U.K. ($31.6bn., 7.0%) . Even on the flow basis, China has received $63.0bn. of inward investment in 2006, of which the most important investing country to China is Hong Kong, totaling $20.2 bn. in 2006, followed by UK-held Virgin Island ($11.2 bnJ ,the second rank, Japan ($4.6bnJ ,the third rank, South Korea ($3.9bnJ and the U. S. ($2.7bn) . (China Statistical Yearbook 2007; JETRO White Paper: Trade and Investment 2007) Based on the above-mentioned facts, we consider the competitive situations among companies from different countries in China. Do they compete head-to-head? Or, do they compete in another way? Through the executives' perception on competition, we try to deal with how they feel their competitive situation in China, based on a questionnaire survey which was sent to Japanese executives in charge of managing manufacturing subsidiaries in China during September to October in 2004 to investigate how subsidiary executives feel their competitive situation there and what kind of strategy they should pursue in the coming years. This paper comprises 4 sections. The next section shows how we collected companies' data, operating in China, and what kind of criteria we have employed to do the research and the basic features of responding companies. The third section deals with the perception of executives on how they perceive their conditions of Chinese market in relation to the competition with their competitors. And we also introduce Porter's Five forces model to investigate why they feel about their market. The final section argues that we have to consider how Japanese executives respond to the competitive situation. Hence, a managerial implication will be discussed from the standpoint of Japanese executives. |

| Abstract | This study evaluate the effects of an intervention package, including non-contingent reinforcement(NCR), to reduce severe problem behaviors of a student with autism and mental retardation in the daily program of a special needs school. Prioritizing the practicality of assessment and intervention procedures, we relied on interview and direct observation to identify the function of the problem behaviors and selected a maintained reinforcer that was easily delivered among alternatives. In Intervention 1, NCR was provided, with extinction (EXT) and contingent response to communicative behaviors(CR). In Intervention 2, visual schedule and peer mediated strategy, in addition to NCR, EXT, and CR, were introduced. Reduction of the problem behaviors occured following Intervention 1, and more substantial occurred following Intervention 2. Additionally, increases in class participation were noticeable after Intervention 2. Additionally, increases in class participation were noticeable after Intervention 2 was implemented. On the basis of these results, we discussed practical ways of implementing NCR interventions in school settings where controlling environments is typically difficult. |

| Abstract | In an effort to secure the comfort of all aspect of life and security through electricity production, research, nuclear weapons production and medical uses, radioactive waste is being generated throughout the world as a result. Without pro – active management and protection, the hazardous nature of radioactive materials can pose serious threats to human health and the environment. A waste containment or disposal facility is required to isolate the waste from man and the biosphere to avoid any undue radiation exposure. Deep geological repository or disposal facility is considered as an effective way to isolate high level radioactive waste, HLW from the human environment, for which a multi – barrier system plays a very significant role. In this paper, literature collection was carried out, aimed to overview the present knowledge about the concepts of repository for HLW and to identify technologies that are currently available in the nuclear industry worldwide and the current state of barrier technologies for hazardous waste sites. |

| Abstract | The current state of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) used in communication between nonnative speakers of English seems to require a change in the way English is taught and learned. However, English has still been taught and learned as a foreign language as ifit were mainly used in communication with its NSs. This article attempts to review some ofthe recent advances in ELF research and then to draw their pedagogical implications. |

| Abstract | This paper is the final report of our field research of the denim Jeans value chain network in the Setouchi district. Based on the argument delivered in our earlier reports, we now concentrate on the mechanism which underlies the survival of the district under the fierce global competitive pressures. We suggest that local economies such as ours full of small and medium sized producers of denim jeans tend to have individualistic industrial climates. Textile converters and fashion designers and the like do not hesitate to learn from their competitors by imitation. This is because they usually receive training on commercial knowledge and technical skills through their actual daily jobs instead of formal education at professional schools. Imitation is not only an important part of their professional learning, but also one of effective ways to save experimental costs to raise numerous ideas and prototype new products. This tendency creates a certain level of homogeneity of product designs, which also creates certain pressures for the manufacturers to differentiate themselves from their own competitors. Under this anbivalent iudustrial climate, the manufacturers seek their uniqueness through improvised reinterpretation of the original product designs. This uniqueness which creeps in the imitation process may come from the recent movement where some of young and entrepreneurial startups and the like acquire deserted production capacities that used to be owned by older generations. Faced with the recent fierce competitive pressures, such old generations have lost their motivation to continue their business and deserted their production facilities. The younger generation gives lives to such facilities and receives wider learning opportunities and flexible production capabilities under the new low−volume diversified production paradigm. Under this new circumstance, planned obsolescence of products becomes common and overall design and production capabilities are deemed to evolve quite quickly and effectively. |

| Abstract | Using a Gibbs distribution developed in the theory of statistical physics and a long−range percolation theory, we present a new model of a stock price process for explaining the fat tail in the distribution of stock returns. We consider two types of traders, Group A and Group B : Group A traders analyze the past data on the stock market to determine their present trading positions. The way to determine their trading positions is not deterministic but obeys a Gibbs distribution with interactions between the past data and the present trading positions. On the other hand, Group B traders follow the advice reached through the long−range percolation system from the investment adviser. As the resulting stock price process, we derive a Lévy process. |

| Title Alternative | Terms of Abuse in Richardson's Pamela: With Special Reference to Figurative Expressions |
| FullText URL | 136_073_084.pdf |
| Author | Wakimoto, Kyoko| |
| Abstract | As examined in our previous papers, Richardson's Pamela contains a rich variety of expressions, whether endearing or depreciatory, which are applied to male/female characters in the novel. In succession to Wakimoto(2007c), the present paper continues to examine the terms of abuse found in Pamela. This time, our focus of discussion is on the terms used allusively or figuratively. In figurative language, a referent is substituted by another word or phrase which embodies, in a more effective way, the central features of the referent. It appears quite likely, therefore, that most, if not all, of those which are represented by such rhetorical devices as 'metaphor' or 'metonymy' give more vivid and clearer impressions. Our purpose here in this paper is twofold: first to classify some remarkable of examples of symbolic words in Pamela, and then to make a rough comparison with Fielding's two parodies of it. |

| Abstract | The content of nursing education and the effective ways of studying nursing have been investigated by teachers of nursing. Therefore, in the lesson of "Basic Nursing Technique" did we examine the educational way in which the students' will to study nursing can be heightened and the students are able to work independently and creatively. we focused on the educational way which adopted the discovery study system in the lessons of "Help of Eating" and "Help of Excreting". From the viewpoint of the students' intention to study and their work, the effect of this educational way was researched according to their self-appreciation. As a result, the following four points were made clear by the introduction of the discovery study system. (1) The students could cooperate more easily in studying nursing. (2) The students' interest in nursing was heightened more than before. (3) The students could enhance their will to study nursing and work independently. (4) The items of "Sense of Purpose" and "Ingenuity" were less evaluaoed than the other items. |

| Abstract | With the 17-th century an essentially new period in the development of mathematics began. The circle of quantitative relations and spatial forms of mathematics studied now was no longer exhausted by numbers, quantities and geometric figures. On this basis there resulted the explicit introduction into mathematics of the ideas of motions and change. Being inseparably connected with the needs of natural science, the accumulation of quantitaive relations and spacial forms studied in mathematics was continuously expanding. However, in addition to this quantitative grouth, at the end of the 18-th and the beginning of the 19-th centuries a number of essentially new features were observed in the development of mathematics. The enormous amount of factual material which had been accumulated in the 17-th and 18-th centuries led to the demand for a deep logical analysis and unification of it from a new point of view. In essence, the relationship between mathematics and natural science was no loss close but was now increased in complexity. The majority of new theories arose from internal requirements of mathematics itself. However, the circle of applications to problems of science and technology was greately expanding at this time. In this way, as a result of both the internal requirements of mathematics and the new needs of science and technology, the circle of quantitative relations and spatial forms studied in mathematics was greately expanded: relations between elements of arbitrary groups, operations in function spaces, etc. are now parts of mathematics. In this paper, we are concerned with mathematical thought. Several ideas of great scientists are introduced, and we know the essence of mathematical thought. The power of mathematical thought can be brought up by means of a deep thought. The relationship between mathematical thought and creativity is also studied. |

The results were; 1) Typically, two ritual behaviors were reported at attending patient's death. One was "Tamayobi"; calling dying patient's name to commend his soul to God or Hotoke. Other was "Matugo no mizu", giving water to dying patient to sympathy him. Few nurses didn't know "Tamayobi".
