Abstract In an effort to secure the comfort of all aspect of life and security through electricity production, research, nuclear weapons production and medical uses, radioactive waste is being generated throughout the world as a result. Without pro – active management and protection, the hazardous nature of radioactive materials can pose serious threats to human health and the environment. A waste containment or disposal facility is required to isolate the waste from man and the biosphere to avoid any undue radiation exposure. Deep geological repository or disposal facility is considered as an effective way to isolate high level radioactive waste, HLW from the human environment, for which a multi – barrier system plays a very significant role. In this paper, literature collection was carried out, aimed to overview the present knowledge about the concepts of repository for HLW and to identify technologies that are currently available in the nuclear industry worldwide and the current state of barrier technologies for hazardous waste sites.

Title Alternative The Utopia of Western Mind and Experimental Science New Atlantis (F.Bacon, 1627)

Author Takeda, Terufumi|
Abstract TO THE READER by Bacon's secretary William Rawley when he published New Atlantis after Bacon's death is quoted here as a substitute for the synopsis of this paper : This Fable my Lord devised, to the end that he might exhibit therein, a model or description of a College, instituted for the interpreting of Nature, and the producing of great and marvellous works for the benefit of man ; under the name of Salomon's House, or the College of the Six Days' Works. And even so far his Lordship hath proceded, as to finish that part. Certainly, the model is more vast, and high, than can possibly be imitated in all things ; Notwithstanding most things therein are within men's power to effect・・・・

Title Alternative Mathematics and Mathematics Education
FullText URL 002_111_119.pdf
Author Takahashi, Yasuji|
Abstract With the 17-th century an essentially new period in the development of mathematics began. The circle of quantitative relations and spatial forms of mathematics studied now was no longer exhausted by numbers, quantities and geometric figures. On this basis there resulted the explicit introduction into mathematics of the ideas of motions and change. Being inseparably connected with the needs of natural science, the accumulation of quantitaive relations and spacial forms studied in mathematics was continuously expanding. However, in addition to this quantitative grouth, at the end of the 18-th and the beginning of the 19-th centuries a number of essentially new features were observed in the development of mathematics. The enormous amount of factual material which had been accumulated in the 17-th and 18-th centuries led to the demand for a deep logical analysis and unification of it from a new point of view. In essence, the relationship between mathematics and natural science was no loss close but was now increased in complexity. The majority of new theories arose from internal requirements of mathematics itself. However, the circle of applications to problems of science and technology was greately expanding at this time. In this way, as a result of both the internal requirements of mathematics and the new needs of science and technology, the circle of quantitative relations and spatial forms studied in mathematics was greately expanded: relations between elements of arbitrary groups, operations in function spaces, etc. are now parts of mathematics. In this paper, we are concerned with mathematical thought. Several ideas of great scientists are introduced, and we know the essence of mathematical thought. The power of mathematical thought can be brought up by means of a deep thought. The relationship between mathematical thought and creativity is also studied.

Title Alternative The Thermal Condition in the Classrooms and Students' Thermal Sensation (Report 1) - A Study done from April through July -

Abstract Dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperature in classrooms at the School were measured from April through July in 1990, by means of an Assmann ventilated psychrometer. The thermal sensation of the female students was surveyed by a questinnaire at the same time. Correlation coefficients between the rates of thermal sensation and thermal indicators such as natural temperature, relative humidity, effective temperature and discomfort index were computed. And multiple regressions equations of these indications and partial corelation coefficients were also computed from the temperature and humidity. These data showed that the students' thermal sensation in this season is primarily influenced by temperature and not so much by humidity. The relation between temperature and the rate of students who feel the heat was discussed.

Abstract Evaluation of dental implantation is very important because it gives useful information for both planning the dental treatment and evaluating of prognosis. This study aimed at improving our previously developed Tooth Mobility (TM) tester and developing a dental implant movement (IM) checker. The measuring probe included a bimorph transducer of two piezoelectric elements. It was actuated by single frequency and detected tooth acceleration. The acceleration signal was processed and the IM score was calculated in PC. Two artificial implant models in which IMZ implant was buried with different elasticity of surrounding (molteno(@)) were used to examine the performance of the IM checker. The IM scores obtained in the models were 29 and 58. The measurement time was below 15 seconds. The average of measurement variation of one operator was below 6% and the average variation among five operators was below also 6%. The IM checker reduced a measurement variation by 51% and a measuring time by 61% compared with those of the TM tester in natural teeth. The newly developed IM checker had sufficient measuring reliability and we could objectively estimate the implant movement in dental clinics.

Abstract This paper is an attempt to establish an objective criterion for civilizations, in order to treat them impartially and give them a fair assessment. First, theories up to the present about civilizations including those of Spengler and Toynbee are introduced. Second, the criterion presented by Bagby to distinguish major civilizations and peripheral civilizations are examined and proved to be subjective. Then the author proposes as an objective criterion for big civilizations just the pattern of succeeding four stages with the span of 400~500 years each. Big civilizations meeting this requirement which total eight or nine are divided into two types according to the difference of their nature. Lastly is shown how four puzzles of world history that have hitherto caused a lot of disputes (feudalism, absolute power of royalty, capitalism and modernization) can be solved through the recognition of these big civilizations.

Title Alternative Preparation and Properties of ZnO Transparent Conductive Thin Films by Activated Reactive Evaporation Method
FullText URL 002_121_129.pdf
Author Fujiwara, Takashi| Fujii, Tatsuo| Nanba, Tokuro| Takada, Jun| Miura, Yoshinari|
Abstract Zinc oxide films were prepared on silica glass substrates by the use of an r.f. activated reactive evaporation (ARE) method, and were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The electrical conductivity of the films and the doping effect of Al ions were also investigated. XRD measurements indicate that the films were c-axis oriented and that an r.f. plasma of Zn and O was necessary for the ZnO film deposition. Substrate temperature, oxygen gas pressure, evaporation rate, r.f. power and Al doping amount affect the c-axis orientation, the growth rate, the microstructure of the films and electrical conductivity. Optimum conditions with a fine texture of the surface and having good ctystallinity as well as good conductivity (≒10(-4)Ω・cm) were as follows : the substrate temperature; 200℃, the total evaporation rate; 1.0Å/s, the oxygen pressure; 2.0×10(-4) Torr, the r.f. power; 250W and the Al evaporation rare ratio; 2~6%. The films with 1.0×10(-3)Ω・cm were prepared at 50℃ for the substrate temperature.
