| Title Alternative | Stein Type Confidence Interval of the Disturbance Variance in a Linear Regression Model |

| Abstract | In this paper the interval estimation of the disturbance variance in a linear regression model is discussed from several view points. Firstly, a brief summary ofthe Stein type point estimation theory and the Stein type interval estimation theory is given. Then, the relationship between the improvement on the point estimation and the improvement on the interval estimation is discussed. It is shown that substituting the Stein type estimator for the usual estimator in the confidence interval leads to the improvement on the interval estimation. Secondly, the Neyman accuracy of the Stein type confidence interval is considered. The Neyman accuracy is a measure related to the unbiasedness of a confidence interval. It is shown that the Stein type confidence interval is not unbiased. Thirdly, the Wolfowitz accuracy of the Stein type confidence interval is considered. The Wolfowitz accuracy is related to the closeness of the endpoints to. the true parameter. The sufficient condition for the Stein type confidence interval to improve on the usual confidence interval is derived. Finally, the Stein type confidence interval is discussed under the multivariate Student-t distribution. It is shown that so far as the coverage probability and the multivariate Student-t distributions are concerned, the Stein type confidence interval is not robust against nonnormality, but that the superiority over the usual confidence interval still holds against nonnormality. Furthermore, for the case when it is known that error terms have a multivariate Student-t distribution, a Stein type confidence interval which improves on the usual confidence interval is presented. |

| Abstract | In this note, an abstract setting for discussing comparative statics in the large is presented to give a necessary and sufficient condition for the first Hicksian law to hold. This condition is gradually tranformed to the one through which we are able to see clearly the power of a theorem due to Gale and Nikaido. This theorem has been overlooked probably because it apparently does not involve the two systems to be compared. Moreover the condition for the theorem to be valid also guarantees the uniqueness of a solution to the equation systems under consideration. Some comments are also given to a recent contribution by T. Shiomura. His method of proof is based upon an advanced homotopy approach for fixed point algorithm. One important consequence of his results is that imperfect stability is enough to establish the first Hicksian law in general equilibrium models. This may, however, be shown using elementary calculus. |

| Abstract | This paper is aimed at summing up T. Matsumoto's recent academic achievements regarding Anshan Iron & Steel Co. in northeast China. The important facts raised therein are as follows. AISC rapidly recovered its facilities in the first half of 1950s. The production level of AISC resumed its maximum prewar level between 1952 to 1954. How was it possible to restore the equipment which had been heavily damaged from the WWII and the Chinese Civil War in such a short period? A marvelous reconstruction of AISC in 'Three Year Reconstruction Period' after 1949 was a result realized by the combination of many factors: (1) exceptional enthusiasm for reconstruction among young Chinese engineers and workers who were sent to Anshan and trained there; (2) the flexible man power policy of Eight Route Army controlling their hostile emotion to the ex-enemies, pursuing the latest and rational know-how, and challenging to create a new steel production technology; (3) availability and cooperation of the Japanese and the ex-Nationalist Chinese engineers; (4) remaining equipments and captured documents; (5) experience and skills ofremaining Chinese workers. With all these five factors combined, AISC dramatically recovered its facility, and restored its prewar level in a few years. |

| Abstract | Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous inflammation of unknown etiology, and seems to involve the liver parenchyma in most cases. However, sarcoidosis-associated hepatocellular carcinoma is rare. We report here a case in which a hepatocellular carcinoma occurred within the liver, which was probably involved as a result of systemic sarcoidosis. A 57-year-old Japanese man had been followed up for 2 years because of diabetic nephropathy and sarcoidosis. On admission for pneumonia, imaging studies revealed an unexpected hepatic tumor. Histology revealed a hepatocellular carcinoma accompanied by T-lymphocytic infiltration and marked granulomatous inflammation, which was surrounding some tumor nodules. The background liver parenchyma exhibited a moderate degree of fibrosis with granulomatous inflammation. The patient had no other apparent liver disease such as viral hepatitis, steatohepatitis, or primary biliary cirrhosis. Therefore, in the present case, sarcoidosis may be considered the probable background etiology for hepatocarcinogenesis. |
