Abstract | Serum lipid peroxides were measured by a thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method. TBA color reactions carried out under the conditions with acetic acid (TBA-AA) or hydrochloric acid (TBA-HCl) systems, and then TBA value was detected by colorimetric ([OD]) and fluorometric ([FR]) measurements. Effects of ferrous ion, ferric ion and EDTA on the both systems were examined. Equal TBA value dependent upon concentrations of MDA (tetraethoxypropane) were obtained on both systems detected by [OD], but the relative fluorescence of TBA-AA system was higher than that of TBA-HCl system. Fluorometric determination was suitable for low TBA value, and colorimetric one was for high TBA value. Good correlation between TBA[OD] values and TBA[FR] values of serum from patients was estimated, but it was suggested that effects of serum substance were differ on the both systems. Effects of iron on TBA-AA and TBA-HCl systems were different significantly, particularly high Fe-TBA values obtained from TBA-AA system in the presence of ferrous ion. The fact suggests that serum lipid peroxidation is induced by ferrous ion during a heating of TBA color reaction. Same effect of ferric ion in TBA-AA system was observed. The increment of TBA values by ferrous and ferric ions was inhibited by a addition of EDTA. It was considered that the difference effect of iron on the both systems was due to pH and acetic acid concentration. The relationship of TBA values and Fe-TBA values of serum from patients was no correlated, and the various inhibition ratios of EDTA for the TBA value was calculated. It is suggested that Fe-TBA value is possible to detemine the qualitative difference of serum lipid peroxides. |

Abstract | 生物学的あるいは生化学的な緩衝液を使用して作製された電子顕微鏡試料と従来の電子顕微鏡用として使用されている緩衝液で作成した試料とで電子顕微鏡像から比較検討した。HEPES緩衝液で作製した試料の電子顕微鏡像は、従来の電子顕微鏡に用いられている緩衝液で作製した試料から得られた電子顕微鏡像と非常によく似た像を示し、このHEPES緩衝液は電子顕微鏡の固定用緩衝液として使用できることが認められたが、その他(PIPES、MOPS緩衝液)の緩衝液ではあまりにも細胞内の可溶性物質が溶出しすぎて使用に耐えなかった。電子顕微鏡学研究において使用されうる固定用緩衝液は細胞内のオルガネラの保持が余りにも良い場合には、その微細構造の解析が困難になり、程々に細胞内の可溶性物質が溶出した方が解析がし易くなると思われ、この様な観点から、今回使用したHEPES緩衝液は生物学的あるいは生化学的な研究から引き続き電子顕微鏡用の試料を作製する際、同じ緩衝液が使用できることが認められた。 |

Abstract | これまでに生体電気インピーダンスを用いて身体運動の解析を行ってきた。インピーダンスの変動原因は測定部位の等価断面積変化および貯血量変化と説明できるが,直接的に断面積変化や貯血量変化を測定することは困難であるため,その変動原因の定量的な検討は不十分であった。そこで,本研究では上肢運動に伴う生体電気インピーダンスの変動原因を生体の等価回路のパラメータの変動で説明する。インピーダンスのモデルはCole-Cole型であり,等価回路は,細胞外液抵抗Re,細胞内液抵抗Ri,分散の特性周波fm fm,緩和時間の分布の程度を表すα,βの独立した5パラメータで表現した。 上肢の肘関節および手関節の屈曲運動野に伴う前腕部および上腕部の電気インピーダンスを測定した。まず,電気インピーダンスの等価直列抵抗Rの変動率をパラメータの変動率で線形近似し,その信頼性と各パラメータ変動のRへの影響を確認した。Rへの影響はReとRiが支配的であるが,測定部位や運動の違いにより,それぞれの影響が異なることを示した。これは測定部位の筋活動状態の違いを表すものである。さらに,肘関節最大屈曲におけるRの変化にはfmの変化が大きく依存しており,上肢運動のインピーダンス変化には細胞膜の分極特性の変化も影響していることを明らかにした。本研究の結果は,運動強度の違いや疲労状態における身体運動評価に有意義である。 |

Abstract | We clarified that adequate oxygen stress induced by low dose radiation activates not only chemical biological protective function, such as induction of the synthesis of SOD, GPX and HSP70, but also the biomembrane function, such as enhanced membrane fluidity and ATPase activity. It is possible that activation of these mechanisms alleviates in vivo oxidation injuries resulting in alleviation of pathologic condition, such as symptoms of hepatopathy and diabetes mellitus. Namely, adequate activation of the functions of the living body by low dose radiation can contribute to suppressing aging and to preventing or reducing active oxygen species related diseases which are thought to involve peroxidation and have been regarded as the diseases for which radon spring water is an effective treatment. Clarification in detail of the mechanisms of these phenomena is required to understand the effects of low dose radiation on the functions of the living body, including adaptive response. |

Abstract | 早期膵癌を発見するためのスクリーニング法を確立するため,1986年6月1日から1990年6月30日までの期間のprospective studyを行った。対象は,人間ドックを目的として来院した患者を主とする三朝分院の外来患者1,748名である。一次スクリーニング検査として,血清アミラーゼ,エラスターゼI,腹部超音波検査(US)を施行し155名の要精検者が得られ,要精検率は8.9%であった。155名の要精検者に,二次検査として,USの再精査,ERCP,腹部CTを施行した。その結果,早期膵癌患者1名,進行膵癌患者4名を発見し,膵癌発見率は0.29%と良好な成績であった。加えて,一次スクリーニングの検査項目を限定することによりcost-benifitを改善することができた。発見された膵癌患者の3名は60歳代であった。また,年代別要精検率は加齢とともに上昇した。1年以後にfollow-up検査を受けた患者の数は641名でfoilow-up率は36.7%であり,そのなかから膵癌は発見されなかった。60歳代のfollow-up率は40歳以上60歳未満のそれにくらべて有意の低値をとった。早期膵癌の見逃しを少なくするためには,今後,60歳代を中心とする患者のfollow-up率をさらに高めることが必要である。 |

Abstract | This paper describes the prediction of seepage in the impervious zones of six embankment dams by seepage analysis. In addition, by making use of the available monitored pore water pressure data of the first filling of reservoir, back analysis was carried out to estimate the best fit seepage parameters. The estimated parameters were used for further prediction of pore water pressures in subsequent monitored durations with reasonable accuracy. The accuracy of prediction was evaluated quantitatively by the prediction difference and error index. The results show that the error indices in the upstream sides of the impervious zones are smaller than those in the downstream sides. |

Abstract | In this paper the theoretical procedure to analyze the dynamic behavior of highly saturated sand bed around a cylindrical block under the cyclic loading of water pressure is developed. The fundamental equations were derived for the axially symmetric coordinates. Then, the finite element equations were developed to solve these fundamental equations numerically. Finally, the numerical method was verified by experiments. |

Abstract | The unsaturated soil hydraulic properties are essential data to predict the seepage behavior in the vadose zone. In this paper, a new experimental methodology of determining unsaturated soil hydraulic properties is proposed. The soil hydraulic properties are assumed to be represented by van Genuchten's closed-form expressions. Unknown parameters of this model are identified by using a optimization techniques. The optimization approach is nonlinear least-squares algorithm in corporating finite element analysis of one-dimensional nonsteady seepage flow. The advantages of the methods are in the possibility of identifying the optimal unsaturated soil hydraulic properties and diminishing experimental time. To evaluate availability of our proposed method, experimental results which are determined by proposed methods and conventional method are compared for decomposed granite soil. |

Abstract | Thermal 'staircase', a layer of constant temperature between the sheets of the steep gradients, was formed in the seasonal thermocline, which was 2.5 m above the bottom at a point of 18 m deep on the boundary slope in Lake Biwa. Following a sediment resuspension event when a moderate onshore wind blew, bed materials should be suspended up to the thermocline, then settled down forming a staircase above the turbid intrusion. Comparing the observed downward hear flux with the settling flux of sediment, it was found that double-diffusive convection would play an important role on the formation of the whole structure consisting of the staircase and turbid intrusion along with chemical anomalies and dense population of phytoplankters, which were fed by nutrients supplied from the bottom sediment under a typical condition of drought. Laboratory experiments were conducted to demonstrate the thermal and sediment processes in the stratified lake. Resuspension process due to surface and internal waves was examined using a tank with a sloping bottom, while the settling process was investigated by using a deep, diffusive tank. Formative process and scales of the staircase and intrusion were discussed relating with the intensity of resuspension and the buoyancy fluxes. |

Abstract | Partial least squares linear discriminant function (PLSD) as well as ordinary linear discriminant function (LDF) are used in pattern recognition analysis of writer identification based on are patterns extracted from the writings written with Hangul letters by 20 Koreans. Also a simulation study is performed using the Monte Carlo method to compare the performances of PLSD and LDF. PLSD showed remarkably better performance than LDF in the Monte Calro study and slightly better performance in the analysis of the real pattern recognition data. |

Abstract | Let A be a bialgebra and let S be a right A-comodule algebra which has an A-comodule subalgebra T with common identity. We show that if S is a separable extension of T, then for a left A-module algebra K, K♯S is a separable extension of K♯T. Abstract | Binding energy of O1s core electron measured in XPS is a candidate to determine new scale of Lewis basicity of oxide ion in glass. Some mathematical expressions for the basicity or XPS chemical shift, such as charge parameter and optical basicity, are compared with experimental O1s binding energy in binary alkali oxide glasses. The expressions so far in use need some modification in parameters. A new empirical expression introduced in this paper gives new concept and universal scale of basicity. |

Abstract | This paper discusses the shear strength and volume change characteristics of a loose Fraser River sand. Suction-controlled simple shear tests were carried out for the unsaturated sand. Drained tests for the saturated sand were also carried out for the comparison with the unsaturated sand. The increase of the shear strength of the sand with the matric suction is very small and there is almost no increase of that over 20 kPa of the matric suction. The suppression effect of the matric suction on the volume change bahavior during shear is small, and the degree of dilation increases with the increase of the matric suction. |

Abstract | The use of glass and plastic greenhouses have rapidly increased in recent years. Meteorological and soil moisture environments inside a greenhouse are significantly different from those in the open field. These differences should be understandable to establish accurate predictions of water consumption and evapotranspiraton inside a greenhouse which play impotrant roles in the design of any irrigation system. This study aims to estimate the micrometeorological conditions inside a watermelon plastic greenhouse which can be used for evapotranspiration calculations. Therefore, micrometeorological data were measured inside and outside the greenhouse for the comparison purposes. The results of this study may be summarized as : (1) Solar radiation inside the greenhouse was about 70% of that of outside it. (2) Net radiation during the daytime inside the greenhouse was almost the same as the absorbed total short-wave radiation. (3) The difference of air temperature inside and outside the greenhouse was very large during the daytime whereas not much difference was observed during the nighttime. (4) Both relative humidity and saturation deficit inside the greenhouse were higher than outside in case of highly vegetative land. (5) Wind speed inside the greenhouse was almost zero, while outside the average value was 1.8m/s. |

Abstract | A dynamic response of a submarine pipeline buried in sandy seabed sediments to water loading generated by harmonically oscillating water-table vertical movements is examined in the present report experimentally and numerically. The aim of small-scale laboratory experiments was: (1) to record time-histories of pipeline vertical displacements, and (2) to observe a shape of slip surface of an overburden sand body involved in breakout together with the pipeline. A parametric study was carried out in order to investigate the influence of two meaningful factors, that is the depth of burial and the specific gravity of pipeline, on a gradual upward displacement of the pipeline. Based on a numerical finite-element 2D-analysis of the hydrodynamic pore pressure and effective stresses oscillations in the pipeline vicinity, an analysis of the pipeline stability potential is presented, in which all the experimental cases tested are verified. All important component forces (e.g., hydrodynamic uplift force) associated with floatation phenomenon of the buried submarine pipeline are considered and quantified. |
