| Abstract | This article analyzes the importance of education when attempting regional revitalization by considering the case of the introduction of‘ an English Education District’ and a public cram school in a Japanese town. As Japan faces a depopulated society, it is important for local administrations to maintain their local population through public policy that supports economic activities and improves living conditions. Wake Town in Okayama Prefecture has already undertaken a variety of actions, supported by the human resources of the national government and private companies, to promote its livability. This article elucidates the reason behind Wake Town's strong commitment to its education policy, which has resulted in, for example, the creation of a public cram school. This article focuses on three points: (1) the background of the education policy in Wake Town, (2) the management of the newly established public cram school, and (3) the evaluation of this school in the view of its students and their parents. Finally, the article argues that free public education is becoming increasingly important for community development in the global era ofthe 21st century. |

| Title Alternative | New leader builds a strategy to recover the performance |

| Abstract | In this paper, focusing on the management crisis, we analyzed the judgments and actions taken by a new leader entrusted to reconstruction and the relationship with the organization members who responded to it, and examined the behavioral style of the leader. As a result of case study, we were able to confirm the following points. Under the influence of the representative heuristic, the new leader decided in a top-down style the rationalization plan that overestimated the start dash to survive the company. For the members, this will give rise to a situation where it is not convincing. Subsequent actions of the leader are consistent with behavior of innovative leadership such as role modeling, schema transformation. It is linked to the characteristics of heuristics such as easy remembrance (recallability) and affinity. If such behavior is taken, there is a possibility of showing synchronicity. Also, leaders will take care to treat everyone equally through specific actions and express sincerity to rationalization measures substantially. In response to such attitudes, members feel strongly about interpersonal justice. It was suggested that the behavior and attitude of the leader mentioned above will make a stepping stone toward recovery of business performance. |

| Abstract | We evaluated how exposure to airborne volatile organic compounds emitted from a plastic recycling facility affected nearby residents, in a cross-sectional study. Individuals>10 years old were randomly sampled from 50 households at five sites and given questionnaires to complete. We categorized the subjects by distance from the recycling facility and used this as a proxy measure for pollutant exposure. We sought to improve on a preceding study by generating new findings, improving methods for questionnaire distribution and collection, and refining site selection. We calculated the odds of residents living 500 or 900 m away from the facility reporting mucocutaneous and respiratory symptoms using a reference group of residents 2,800 m away. Self-reported nasal congestion (odds ratio=3.0, 95% confidence interval=1.02-8.8), eczema (5.1, 1.1-22.9), and sore throat (3.9, 1.1-14.1) were significantly higher among residents 500 m from the facility. Those 900 m away were also considerably more likely to report experiencing eczema (4.6, 1.4-14.9). Air pollution was found responsible for significantly increased reports of mucocutaneous and respiratory symptoms among nearby residents. Our findings confirm the effects of pollutants emitted from recycling facilities on residents’ health and clarify that study design differences did not affect the results. |

| Abstract | The facilities of laboratory animal within the Division of Animal Experiments, Life Science Research Center, Gifu University was established in April 2005. In order to gain reliable data from animal experiments, it is vital that the subjects' environment be stable and well-controlled. In addition, the safety impact to humans and bioethical rules must be considered when conducting animal experiments. We provide both the facilities necessary for such experiments as well as comprehensive support in the form of experiment program planning and subject care and maintenance. |

| Abstract | Adenohypophysis delivered from oral ectoderm consists of pars distalis (PD), pars intermedia and pars tuberalis (PT). The mechanisms of development of PD has been well studied, and the cell differentiation of PD has been well understood. However, the morphogenesis and the differentiation of PT are still unclear, and the gene expression during the PT development remains largely unknown. In this study, we explored the specifically expressing genes in PT during development and analyzed its spatiotemporal expressions pattern. Microarray analysis on laser-captured PT and PD tissues obtained from chicken embryos on embryonic day 10 (E10.0) showed high expressing genes, Cytokine-like 1 (CYTL1) and Gap junction protein alpha 5 (GJA5) in PT. A detail analysis of spatiotemporal expressions pattern during chick embryo development by in situ hybridization revealed that CYTL1 mRNA was first detected in lateral head ectoderm and ventral head ectoderm in E1.5. The CYTL1 expressions moved into Rathke’s pouch at E2.5, then it was localized in PT primordium and continuously expressed in PT primordium until E12.0. On the other hand, GJA5 mRNA was transiently detected in PT primordium from E6 to E14.0, while the expression was not detected in PD during development. These results suggested that these genes may be involved in the regulation mechanism of PT development and could be a useful marker in the PT development. |

| Title Alternative | Structure and function of tegmentum vasculosum in avian cochlea |

| Abstract | In spite of the importance of endocochlear DC potential (EP) and the K+-rich endolymph for the avian cochlea, the structure and function of the tegmentum vasculosum (TV) has not yet been fully elucidated, compared with those of the stria vascularis in the mammalian cochlea. In this study, we examined structural analysis of the epithelial cells, gene expressions of Na+-K+-ATPase (Atp1A1) and Kir4.1 (Kcnj10), and protein localizations of Na+-K+-ATPase and Kir4.1, in the TV. Tight junctional structures were observed between epithelial dark cells and light cells in the TV. Both Atp1a1 and Kcnj10 genes were detected in the TV. In addition, immunopositive signals for both Na+-K+-ATPase and Kir4.1 were recognized in the TV. These results indicate that Na+-K+-ATPase and Kir4.1 play roles in maintaining the EP and high K+ concentration of the endolymph. Further studies are needed to clarify the physiological functions of the TV. This is the first report which demonstrates that gene and protein expression data contribute to the avian inner ear homeostasis. |

| Abstract | We examined the effects of caffeine treatment on ovalbumin- and histamine-induced rhinitis mouse models and on corticosterone and catecholamine levels in mouse plasma. Treatment with caffeine decreased sneezing and nasal rubbing in both models, but direct nasal administration had no effect. Plasma levels of corticosterone and catecholamine, which have known anti-allergy effects, were increased by caffeine treatment. The increases in corticosterone and catecholamine may be associated with the suppression of rhinitis symptoms. |
