| Abstract | This study examines how environmental conservation costs (ECC) affects firm risk, using changes in leverage ratios and earnings volatility as stand-ins for risk. This study evaluates the direct impact of ECC and its relationship to profitability (ROA) using panel data of Japanese companies from 2010 to 2022 and Pooled OLS regression models. The results demonstrate the risk-mitigating function of sustainability investments by showing that, although independent ECC have little direct significance, their interaction with firm profitability dramatically lowers earnings volatility and leverage instability. These findings underscore the economic value of environmental strategies, suggesting that incorporating profitability considerations into sustainability practices enhances operational stability and reduces risk exposure. To help policymakers, investors, and corporate managers strike a balance between sustainability and financial performance, this study contributes to the growing body of research on the relationship between the environment and finance.
