In order to evaluate the preventive effects of preventive measures against low back pain (LBP) at a worksite which were carried out on the basis of a 10-year-ago study, a follow up study of the same workplace was conducted using the same study method. The preventive measures included improvement of working environment, exercises at work breaks, medical advice to the workers with severe LBP and decreasing overtime work brought by change in the economic situations at enterprises. Results were as follows : (1) Point, period (a month) prevalence rates and prevalence rate of severe LBP and absence days due to LBP (deducted absence days in a year) were all significantly lower than those of 10 years ago. (2) Onset of LBP among young workers were mainly chronic, which is closely related to heavy lifting and constrained working postures such as bending and squatting etc. (3) Absence from work due to LBP was related to work years, severity of LBP and level of job satisfaction.

In 1993 and 1994, a questionnaire survey was conducted on elementary school students of fourth and fifth grades living in Shengyang city (620 children), China and in Okayama city (579 children), Japan to determine defferences in the degree of obesity and life styles between the children of the two countries. Children whose body mass index (BMI) was 22 or higher were considered obese. The percentate of obese children was 5.7 in Shengyang and 5.4 in Okayama. Multiple logistic regression analysis of dietary patterns and life styles to explain childhood obesity in both countries showed the importance of consuming large amounts of grain products, potatoes, sugar, and oily foods as factors related to chilihood obesity. Physical activity has also been shown to be negatively and significantly associated with childhood obesity. Daily intake of enetgy, carbohydrate, and fat among obese children was significantly greater than those among nonobese children. The length of time spent watching television among the Japanese children was found to contribute to childhood obesity.

Rat brain sections were treated with fine granular cationic iron colloid, which was prepared by boilling ferric chloride with hydrazine hydrate and cacodylic acid (Murakami et al., 1986). The sections were then treated with ferrocyanide and HCl for Prussian blue reaction or with protein silver and gold chloride for physical development. Physical development had an advantage over Prussian blue reaction in that it produces clear and highly contrasted images under a light microscope. Thus, the perineuronal sulfated proteoglycans and the fine processes of the nerve cells were clearly demonstrated by physical development.

Sex steroids have a great influence on bone maturation in childhood, especially in adolescence. However, the precise mechanisums are not fully understood. Human chondrosarcoma-derived chondrocytic cell line HCS2/8 cells were cultured in DMEM culture medium supplemented with 1% fetal calf serum, 1×10(-7) M testosterone or estradiol for 24 hours in a subconfuluent state. Then the cells were pulse labeled with (3)H-thymidine to measure DNA synthesis. In addition, S1 nuclease protection assay of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-Ⅰ,-Ⅱ and IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)-2, -3, -4 and IGFBP-5 mRNA was carried out. DNA synthesis of HCS2/8 cell was enhanced in the presence of teststerone but not in the presence of estradiol. Using S1 nuclease protection assay, testosterone increased expressions of IGF-Ⅰ,-Ⅱ, and IGFBP-3mRNA. However, estradiol decreased the expression of IGF-Ⅱ mRNA but did not change expressions of IGF-1, IGFBP-2, -3, -4 or IGFBP-5 mRNA. In conclusion, the present results indicate that teststerone stimulates the growth of chondrocytes, probably via increased expressions of IGF-Ⅰ,-Ⅱ, and IGFBP-3 mRNA.

PTHrP mRNA was quantified by RT-PCR and the localization of PTHrP mRNA was determined by in situ hybridization in kidney. During development, the expression of PTHrP mRNA is much higher before 2 weeks of age while kidney is developing. In E16 fetal mice, PTHrP mRNA was strongly expressed in the collecting ducts, urothelium of the pelvis, tubles, the glomeruli and immature elements in the cortex of the developing kidney (nephrogenic zone). within 0-day-old-mice, it was dominantly expressed in collecting ducts, the urothelium of the pelvis and nephrogenic zone. These findings suggest that PTHrP plays a role in kidney development as an autocrine/ paracrine factor.
