The concentrations of acid and alkaline phosphatases in the blood serum of patients with malignant tumor and other diseases were investigated and the following results were obtained: 1) In normal man, alkaline phosphatase activity in the blood has a higher value than that of acid phosphatase. 2) It was discovered that the concentration of serum acid phosphatase in patients with malignant tumor in the serum was greater than those with non-malignant tumor, but the value of alkaline phosphatase showed little variation in both diseases. 3) The increase of acid phosphatase content in the blood of malignant tumor was greatest when urogenital diseases was combined with it. Diseases of the rectum, colon and skeletal bones also showed higher concentrations of phosphatase than the usual value. When comparing the previous three the first two showed a higher value than the Iatter, 4) In case of obstructive jaundice, alkaline phosphatase content showed a higher increase than in parenchymal jaundice. These results observed in clinical cases agreed with experimetal ones gotten from rabbits and dogs suffering from liver diseases such as obstructive or parenchymal jaundice.
