In human feces, enterococci were 10 times more numerous than coli-forms. Suspension of feces in sterile 0.85% NaCl solution at 25℃ did not result in enterococci growth. Coli-form groups, however, grew remarkably well. Enterococci were incapable of growth and died in filtration-sterilized river water. On the contrary, coli-form groups demonstrated significant growth. Tre pathogeneic enterobacteria (Sal. typhi, Sh. sonnei) died within four days, faster than enterococci. A 50-case field sample presented a correlation coefficient of +0.71 between the number of enterococci and coli-form groups. This indicated that enterococci and coli-form groups both serve as indicators of fecal water pollution. Enterococci numbered 2.3 times more than coli-forms. Coli-form group detection was not suitable for routine work, as it requires incubation at 45.5℃.
